  • Yamaha RX or one more pulsar???????

    Hi All,
Im in confusion between getting a used RX or buy a brand new p 220 dtsi.

Yamaha RX is a bike i have learnt riding on and has been a dream machine,
I wonder how smart it would be to buy an used yamaha rx and over haul it.
i will be using the bike for daily commuting to the office (around 55 to 60kms per day), Can the yammie be a comfy and efficient commuter??
What kind of reliability can i expect from a restored RX? will it run trouble free like a new bike??

Pulsar on the other hand is the bike i currently own (p180 ug3)..

    Guys please suggest

    Regards

Hey hussler wassup.... trying to restore a RX tats great bro, but just to avoid you some trouble try to find out the availability of spares in your area..
As the prices and availability of the spares both have rocketed quite high these days, so check out... And remember RX is about giving your heart n soul to bike o she wont be able to ride with you..

As far as RX is concerned its one of most trouble free bike if maintained properly and over hauled by a good mechanic. Its a great bike bro, for commuting as well as touring.

        • RX100 is not comfortable for 55-60kms/day commute. Certainly not as comfortable as modern four-strokers.
        • Reliability of restored RX100 will depend upon the spares used and most importantly the workmanship. If restored using OEM spares and services of skilled technician it will be reliable.
        • Spares are becoming an issue. Some of the dealers I talk to opine that Yamaha will gradually stop producing spares over five years. So not only will you have to restore, but also stock up on essential spares like cylinder kit, head, plates, etc.
        • Yamaha has recently increased spare part cost. There is a thread on this.
All said and done, venture into this only if you have

        1) Time
        2) Access to services of a good mechanic
        3) Money

P.S: May I know where are you from?

Namma Bengaluru is quite ok when it comes to finding good mechanics. PM some of our B'lore members. They might help you to find reliable mechanics.

get your RX done soon man! ride it till u start driving
60kms wont be an issue. i presume you ride to office/college till EC,Yelahanka,Whitefiled to cover so much distance, it will be a boon in traffic as compared to the new 4St.

get it done with a good mechanic, as someone here said, rajajinagar is one are where u find lotta ReXyians with pimped up/stocked up RX

i would suggest RX over P220.
I ride for around 40-45kms per day and mostly in bumper to bumper traffic.
i find it comfortable, or may be i feel so cos i have not ridden any 4stroker till date.I have seen no problems till now and i am still in the process of restoring it in phases.
BTW i used to live in Rajajinagar now moved to Vijaynagar very recently.
You can find few mechanics who can be trusted.
Parts are the concern but if you have proper contacts then sourcing it would not be an issue.

                      @hussler
decide on the rx. 135 4 speed,5speed, rxz or rx100?
depending on the condition we can suggest what has to be done.
why i am saying this is not all things can be done perfect by one mechanic and vice versa.

Was thinking of getting a rx 135 4 speed as its the best bet for FE, what say?

let me know, what condition i should get the bike in b coz i have read up on a couple of threads that its better to get a bike in worst condition and restore it.

how much would a decently maintained rx135 cost me??
how old a bike should i target??
(which year onwards in terms of production year)

yes 135 4 speeder gives better mileage. but make sure you dont want to extract performance out of it. If you are looking at performance(read top speed, better and wider power band) then i would suggest 5 speed and this would need few addons like performance filter(RDD Filter), RDD Cdi and the list goes on.
a decently maintained 4 speeder should be available between 17-22k
5 speeder 25-32k and rxz i have heard people asking 50k and above.

if you are ready to shell out cash then buy a shagged bike for dirt cheap price and restore it to stock(costs anywhere above 22k including paint job)

You decided to take the plunge All the best

On a more serious note, I would urge you to consider parts availability also when deciding among RX series. 5 Speed parts are bloody difficult to find man. That too critical parts like cylinder, head, etc

4 Speed is alright I think except for crankshaft assembly.

In my opinion 4Speed and 100 are lesser evils I would suggest you choose between them. Just my unsolicited 2 cents.

Regarding buying completely knocked out machine, the logic is flawless but for parts availability. If spares weren't an issue then one could have taken this route. If your budget is flexible I suggest you buy a bike which is in 'good' condition, especially if it is 5Speed.

Also, if you have friends/relatives in other districts of K'nataka like say Hassan, Mysore, Hubli, etc then try to source your bike ffrom those places. May be cheaper there. Just thinking loud.
