  • Looking for 100cc-125cc bike..Need Help

    Hi all,

This is my first post here. I haven't driven a bike so far (I am 30 now ). I have only experience with driving scooters. I read many posts, reviews, bike reports, owners experience etc etc...but still could not nail down any bike.

Brief intro about myself....I am in Bangalore, I am a short guy 5'3" and weigh 60kgs. I am about to get married soon and I want to have a bike, goof around with it and be ready to take my wife confidently on it.

Moreover, there is a possibility of buying a second hand car within a year. So I don't want to buy a too expensive bike....budget say 50-55K max

The things that I am looking for are
    1. Mileage
    2. Ergonomics and ride comfort (no aches of any sort) for the rider and pillion
    3. Should be able to go on long drives (~100kms) on weekends
    4. Resale value
    5. Long engine life with min. maintenance
    6. Cost max Rs 55 K

Please help me in choosing between
    a) Discover 100 cc
PROS: mileage (I talked to some owners and they claim 80kmpl easily and one weird guy goes triples on this bike for 400kms almost every weekend !!), good pick up, 5 speed, Nitrox suspension, Electric Start (ES), DC headlight (though i don't how good it will be at night), wider rear tyre.. cost 47000 on road
CONS: Just released Jun 09...long term performance?, worried about Bajaj's reliability, 4 free services, 2 yrs/40000 warranty, resale value?, 2 level adjustment of rear shocks

Discover 100cc looked better than the Discover 135cc and I did not feel any difference in ride quality or pickup between the two (I was the pillon rider ). Discover 135cc is 55K on road.

    b) HH Passion pro / plus
PROS: Hero Honda proven engine + technology, looks, 6 free services in 1yr, resale value, 5 level setting for shocks
CONS: Not comfortable for long rides it seems, no electric start (HH pro), rear tyre same as front 2.75" specs

    c) TVS star city (110cc)
PROS: ES, pick up, mileage (80+), cost 39000 (ex showroom), 16 litre tank
CONS: maintenance?, engine reliability? resale?, i called some mechanics...none of them advised TVS bikes..

    d) Honda Shine (125cc)
PROS: Reliable Honda engine, very smooth, 125cc bike for the price of HH Pro (47000 base spoke+kick...55000 for Electric + Mag wheels), resale value
CONS: Vibration beyond 60kmph, A.S.S not very good, parts costly, low mileage (45-55kmpl), thin rear tyre, OK looks, Waiting period for delivery

    e) Suzuki Zeus (125cc)
PROS: low end torque, smooth engine,
    CONS: mileage?, A.S.S, resale?

    Thanks a lot
    Venkat

PS: I gathered information from...maybe too much of it ..now confused!

You should end up with only two atlast

      1 - Discover100
      2 - Star 110

Both are Top class models from Bajaj and TVS....

Starcity has been there around for more than 5years and its an Proven bike for commuting purpose and also has a better pulling power
Discover 100 is a new bike but has got better features in it....My friend owns one and after 3 services no complaints of whatsoever...

I would strongly recommend you the Star....
      Mileage nearby 70Kmpl
Better pulling power than the older 100cc version
      5 Years warranty period
4 gears which doesnt cause much confussion for a beginner
      Better Commuter oriented seating position

        Thanks Thunder for your suggestion...

my feet were barely touching the ground (my heel was in air ) when i sat on the discover 100cc....do you think this will cause problem with someone sitting n the back...

I did not sit on TVS star city bike...I don't how high the seat is from the ground. 5 year warranty definitely sounds good. But none of the mechanics in Bangalore spoke highly about TVS bikes. I just googled some mechanics and randomly called at least 10-15 guys...I don't know how good or bad they were

I also inquired about Honda twister...they promise a mileage of 70kmpl*
Basic version is 51751 (no ES + no disc), 4 services in 1 yr, 2yr warranty...but i have to wait till March 1st week....I don't want to wait that long....but again is it worth really that wait is another question

about Pulsar 135 LS...split seat may cause problem for wife....so left it out

        Thanks again

best thing would be take a test ride of all the bikes u mentioned and see what fits you perfectly and go for it. as mileage is +/- 10 kms among all this bikes i feel the main point is comfort for both of u and controlling the vehicle so results can be determined after test drives.

              Hi Brother...

Since you are new - your are having a leangthier Observation on the Bikes...
              Thats quite audible....
I've ridden both Discover100 and Star and i do not notice any Cons in both the bikes.....Because im used to ride more bikes.....
What i would suggest is you could rather take a Test drive of both the bikes....
Different Mechanics have different Suggestions....But atlast it should be you who should take the Right Choice....
Star city has an Robust and Reliable Engine - neverthless with Disco100 also....

Twister is an Sport based Bike(adding to the disc brakes, Rearsets and Seating positons)
As far as the Pics of Twister it seems to be an Bike targeted on the College Goers and the rear seat is too high for Your Wife to sit (Maybe)

I dont think there is a problem with P135....you can also have a try on it... But if you think on Discbrakes (you should reconsider it)

My suggestions for you (keeping in view your requirements)

                Honda CB Twister 110cc.

If you can stretch your budget till 60k, go for the new CBF Stunner 125cc.
HH Karizma (Current) || CBF Stunner PGM-FI || Honda CB Unicorn Dazzler
Honda Aviator || Kinetic Flyte || Kinetic Blaze || HH Splendor

                  Thank you one and all!

I called the TVS guys...100cc TVS sport is Rs 39300 (no ES)..
TVS 110cc start city 45000 (ES) and TVS flame is 55950...I will try to visit the showroom tomorrow with my friend and see....Moreover they are giving 0% interest if booked before Feb 1st....

I have seen a review of TVS star city here....
TVS Star City Roadtest by Dilip Bam
The author Mr. Dilip is extremely happy with this bike and he recommends to one and all in his Q&A's (a sample is provided here INDIABIKE.COM - Q & A Search Results) so enthusiastically that one feels that he is a TVS agent!!

He feels that Bajaj DTS-Si technology is good for 2-3 yrs max and then it starts to deteriorate.... reason he gives that it is due to twin spark plugs ...plz refer to the last post in the Q&A link I have sent...any comments

Regd. disc brakes...one should be skillful in using that right....I am not confident about that....do u think that this will be an added benefit ?

What is the difference between star city and star sport...other than that associated with cc...

as far as 110cc Twister...I am still thinking about it...main things are cost (Rs 52000) and seating comfort (long rides)...other aspects are of course are very impressive...

                  Thanks again

Discover 100 has got 5 level rear shock adjustment. .

The Split seat doesn't cause any discomfort.. its just a psychological block against split seat.

But the Pulsar 135LS has a bit of stiff/hard rear suspension which endows it awesome sharp handling, but might not be pampering for the back (so it might be ok if you do not consider it). Anyway, do not consider the Pulsar 135LS as a typical commuter.. after all its a Pulsar.

Apart from more accurate braking another benefit of Disc brakes is that one does not need to be adjusted for play as unlike cable operated drum brakes, they don't become loose/slack with use. So apart from being safer disc brakes require lesser maintenance.

I think the Twister still have sometime to reach the market and has not yet reached showrooms.

Why don't you consider the Splendor+..?? Its got low seat height (as your height is 5 ft 3).. But yes, you will miss the Self Start as it still doesn't have one. And yes, the rear shocks are not adjustable.

Difference between StarSport and Star city is only few...

Star Sport - When compared to City it has low power - so pulling power will also be low - lighter Weight so will not be comfotable for long rides as stability will be problem - No ES will be a problem.......

Flame DS is also a good choice....as i own the older version of Flame....

If you get used with the DISC Brakes you can be safer with it....But if you Pull it like an ordinary DRUM Brake on high speeds - you will end up with a Skid and fall....

Best of Luck for your Selection...

Mr.Dilip Bam: Yes, He is an agent of TVS. Even if the management lessons he learnt from IIM didnt do any good and he always indulges in misguiding people but at times he is logical and right.

Mechanics: Sorry, they can't think/feel/see/say anything beyond Hero Honda.Herd mentality!!

Bikes you should consider: Discover 100/Star City110/CB Twister.

If i were you, then i would have definitely waited for couple of months and would have gone for the CB Twister.

And if you are in a hurry then i would suggest you test drive both of the other bikes and make your own decision.Star City is a more accomplished performer whereas Discover provides maximum bang for the buck.

                          Thank you one and all,

                          1. I am inclined to go with the TVS bikes....as I am unsure about the Bajaj bikes...especially my friends don't advise them...and Mr. Dilip who has tested so many bikes is also not regarding them very highly.....

                          2. I am hoping to test ride them 2morrow (both star sport and star city)...I feel that I should go with star city 110cc...as it has little bit more power 8.3bhp...and a ES....what do you say guys? Another thing I have to check whether my feet rest comfortably on the ground or not...

The only thing I am concerned is its huge petrol tank...16 litres....and 2.5 litres reserve....I don't know what made them go for such a big one....so I should always have more than 2.5 litres in the tank so that it does not come to reserve

                          3. I am leaving the Twister and the Pulsar 135LS....for now...one I have to wait for another month or so...and I am unsure about the comfort level for both with their aggressive slanting seat for the pillon....

I will keep you updated....about my visit and TD's

                          Thanks again
