  • Is a second Hand Thunderbird Twinspark worth 60K?

    I'm starting this thread on behalf of my friend. Last day he has got an offer of second hand 2009 model Thunderbird Twinspark for 60K. The bike has clocked 20 K kms. The owner claims minimal maintenance and giving fuel economy in between 35-40. The owner is going abroad and thats why he is selling the bike. Since my friend is new to forum he asked me to post a thread on his behalf. Is it really worth to buy a second hand TBTS than going for a new bike? Please give your suggestions....

      Bike costs somewhere around 70k new... definitely not worth it with 20k on the odo. And if the guy is leaving the country I'm sure you can haggle him down

        Hi

        Actually 60k is a real good price for a TBTS 2009 model.The current OTR price of the bike in B'lore is around 1,10,000.The bike is problem free and easy to ride.Also you get a decent fuel economy.It does not have oil leak probs like old REs.So go for the bike...if you don't opt for it then can you please send me the details of the bike cz i am interested in it!!

        Thanks

          The onroad price of a T-Bird is above 1 lakh in my area. But the problem is that he is friend of my friend. So cant do so.

          Sure bro, thanks for your reply. I will go and take a look at bike today or tomorrow. As I said its for my friend. Its all up to him to decide. Read in threads that new Thunderbird has AVL engine which is quite good compared to cast iron engine, has auto decompressor and conventional gear and brake pedals. The matter which made me bother is the wearing of timing belt and oil leaks. I consulted a senior member and his answer was that you gotta learn to live with oil leaks. How much mileage can we expect from TBTS?

              @Jayanath

              The bike has all the papers and it was bought with full amount. I consulted jd666 and he said that a high depreciation of value occurs in the first year itself. So If the bike has clocked 20K kms, 60K is a reasonable price and infact it can even go to 50-55 K mark.

              The reason for considering the bike is because of its cruiser like ergonomics. Earlier T-bird's had some reliability issue's, what about this 2009 model?

                  jd mentioned new AVL engines as high revving compared to standard bullets. works best in range of 3-4K range. And above 4K vibrations start to creep in. I think the speed you mentioned is above that 4K mark.

                    ^^ yup, or else there is something wrong with his bike. Bullets are known for their vibrations, but unnecessarily high vibes means hunb bearings, oil pump not working properly or some other mechanical failure not visible to the rider.

                      So must take a good test ride to know how the bike behaves.

                          So its decided to move forward with the decision. The other option is Bajaj Avenger DTSi fresh piece. What do you say?

                            TBTS is a very good buy for 60k. Go for it. But if you dont want to get your hands dirty in maintenance, the Avenger is a pretty good option with most things similar to the RE minus the Torque. If anything, an Avenger will be a far more reliable machine than a RE. But thats is what I feel. Test ride and decide.

                            P.S.: Most things = Riding position, Peak power, No. of spark plugs, highway cruisability, FE, braking performance, performance in crosswinds, city maneuverability, turning radius, etc.

                              My friend prefers cruising ergonomics and the other reason is that he has some back pain problems. The Avenger has the same engine as P200 rite. I rarely seen any Avenger here, I thought its because of the reliability problems. He dont care for torque or its performance, his primary criteria is riding comfort. I thought it will be good to have cruiser with real cruiser like performance and suggested TBTS over Avenger as the later is just like an ordinary bike and need to be revved high.
