  • Bike Advice...

    Hey all...
I finally got my new thread starting rights and I already have my first big Question.
Something about myself, I am Aditya from Hyderabad.
and I am planning to get my first upgrade from a gearless to a geared bike.I am not that good at riding the geared versions, but then I feel its high time I take the initiative.I am 5'11'' , slightly more than, and 80+ weight. I know or may be I felt that the discovers and shines look very puny to me. So, I want to go for a 150CC or more bike.Like I said, I am from Hyderabad, the traffic almost close to a jam whenever I am out(except on weekends).
    Budget : 75k-80k(Max)
    Mileage : 40kmpl ~ Ok if 35.
Commute : Mostly City, Occassional Long Rides.

    Waiting for advice...

PS: Thought of updating my pic...But in a community thats flooded with some serious and hardcore bikers, thought I ll put my pic once I get my RIDE...Help me out Guys...

I'd suggest you go for the Suzuki GS-150R.

It was my first proper change from a non geared activa to a Manual transmission bike. The Bike feels big and behaves like one. Handling is nowhere close to bikes like r-15 but is far better than unicorn. Mileage is 50 in the city and 55+ on highways.I Use it for Communting to office and take it on the highways whenever i get a chance. Only thing which might be a concern is the poor Headlights, the puny 35 w and a bad reflector design ruin the night riding experience. this is where Unicorn overtakes from the GS. In other aspects the GS is much more advanced than the unicorn and is truly a feel good bike.

There were many issues initially but they have been ironed out slowly. The GS is smooth and silent like the unicorn and has plenty of torque for city riding. Take a test ride and choose if you want the bullet proof engine or its healthy and fast moving competitor!

        Good luck!

          Hi Bro,
I was in a similar situation last september (except that im 5'7 and weigh 70+), i used to ride a Honda Activa and then i decided to go for a geared bike (though i didnt have much experience on geared bikes)
i thought of many options starting from a 125cc Gladi, but decided on the Karizma R. If you can extend your budget by 3k then go for Karizma(onroad price is 83K in phoenix motors, hyd)
Karizma R is a very good handler and i have learnt how to ride on this baby
I would suggest you to take a Test ride of this beauty

Since you need mileage of 40 odd.. and have enough budget for a powerful bike, try P180. Its good in the city, Its good for an occasional weekend long ride, and it wont look line a Luna under you.

Bonus: Will also give you FE of 45 odd easily.

            Also see:
Suzuki GS150R (Lower power than P180, smooooth engine, 6th Gear for easy Highway cruisability, FE of 50+, wont look odd under you, lower priced)
Honda Dazzler (Lower power than P180, smoooooth engine, FE of 50+, Looks: No Comments, Similar pricing)

Edit: I did not recommend a ZMA / P220 as they *might* go over budget. ZMA wont give you your required FE, P220 though can, but there are better city tools than these 2. FZ series is also good inside the city, but no recommended much for highway usage, and anyways 40% is also quite high in terms of highway usage.

Would like to know what keeps you under this false impression.

Test Ride the Motorcycles you like and pick.

as of the Suzuki GS-150R...I personally liked it.But the bike is relatively new in the market and I am not too sure if I should go for a newbie instead of market-concreted bikes like pulsar and all.

I dont mind shedding few more Ks for the Karizma. But heard its got some rear tyre issues and handling aint that easy. Not too sure as of the authenticity though.

"Pulsar 180".. the bike is on the top of my list.Got a quotation from MGB motors Hyderabad. Some 76k odd. The only point of dilemma is the side-Footrest that it lacks. That ll be a serious inconvenience for female pillions.May sound silly, but guys, its serious for me.Any suggestion regarding this??

hmm...ll ask the bajaj guy if he can get it fixed somehow...if not pulsar 180 seems to be a good buy...why is no one suggesting apache?? can somebody tell the pros and cons of 160 and 180-apache...

Also guys...is the fz not very convinient for tall people...I test rided it for say 5-10 mins but dint feel any great discomfort...does it effect in the long rides or after some time???

RTR 180 seems as a better buy to me compared to RTR 160.

The only hiccup which comes associated with RTR's is vibrations and a not very comfy riding position(which i love)

FZ is a very good and capable Motorcycle, FE is slightly low and this is the only sad part.

For 150's I would recommend either the Dazzler or FZ.

P-180 is a better all-rounder to RTR 180, but heard the 4 Valves P-180 might soon raise its head, so...
                        Few Talks-

Bajaj opts out of Auto Expo 2010, New Pulsar 150, New Pulsar 180 coming soon

i think P-180 is suited for you and if you are ready to spend a few thousand more.....go for the ultimate P-220.

                              .
I don't think spares will be a problem for TVS Motorcycles, if you are residing in metros or even major cities like Lucknow/Jaipur/Managalore etc
I liked FZ but only if some one who uses it says its ok for tall people too.
I have ridden the FZ/Fazer comprehensively and i weigh ~85 kgs standing tall at 5"11.

P-180 seems a good buy and may be I ll try to get it fixed with a side footrest. If ever thats possible.
P-180 is a good buy, but side footrest?
and sheel...whats the 4-valve problem raising its head thing..

Pulsars would be updated pretty soon, I mean the 4 valve up gradation has been in talks for past a year or more.
4 Valves shall provide good spread of power and you won't feel the biking stressed up while doing high revs.
To understand this, I would suggest if you can get yourself a XCD-135 and a P-135 and ride them back to back and spot their differences.

There has been talks to all around suggesting new line up of Pulsars being expected and a new platform for them by 2012, but until and unless something doesn't show up, we can just keep our fingers crossed.

Ride the Motorcycles you are considering to buy, you shall have your answer.
If still undecided, pick the one which appeals you the most.

You simply cannot go wrong with the new crop of Motorcycles.
                              Happy buying
