  • Hi from a Calcuttan

    Hi There

Call me Calcuttan or perhaps Old Calcuttan for I have just crossed 50. But I thought I should live once again. So here I am. I have set myself this ambition to go to Leh/Ladakh sometime soon on a bike (caveat - when an old man says soon, he generally means within 2 years). Perhaps solo.

As a daily commute and for highway outings I drive a Duster. As a weekend ride I have a Bullet (the original in every sense). But for going to Leh/Ladakh I am looking at something more modern and dependable. Perhaps a Duke? But 390 or 200? Or shall I go for a Pulsar because wifey might want to go for a spin once in a while on the pillion and may not like the closeness offered by a Duke after 18 years of marriage.

I need to know what my options are. Because I am out of the biking loop for a long time and I feel like a fossil when I read some of the ownership reports. I am not the kind of person who reads about Harleys and BMWs but rides a Hero Honda SS. I am rooted to the realities of life.

Feel free to advice me. I love to listen to every one but do my own thing ;-)

Hope to hear from you all soon.

    Hi Sir

    Welcome to xBhp

It is great to know that you are getting into serious motorcycle touring even at 50+. Inspiring for us kids

Regarding the motorcycles, the Dukes are not the most comfortable bikes to ride, please ride them for a reasonable distance before you put down your money for a new one.

Depending on budget you can also look at the Suzuki GS150, Hero Karizma and Suzuki Inazuma, as all three have nice lazy engines which are happy being ridden the entire day. And extremely comfortable for rider, as well as for the pillion.

All the best for your ride.

    Cheers

      Hello Sir,

Its really inspiring to see people of your genre still driving and living crazy for bikes, where in these days, young lads are forced to drive cars for all sort of reasons. I wish you good luck for your Leh/Ladakh trip.

CBR 250 is reliable & comfortable too, but driving to Leh on a Bullet is, like being crowned as King.

Welcome to xBhp, Sir! Looking forward to your biking experiences.
Duke isn't the bike you're looking for. Try the Karizma which has proven its mettle as a tourer.

          Re: Hi from a Calcuttan

Welcome to xBhp. Happy to see the plan in your mind. A solo ride would mean a trouble free bike..

it would be great if you can tell us your budget.. the Suzuki inazuma 250 is a perfect bike for touring and pillion comfort.. but it will cost you ~2.25L.. it is a better deal than the Dukes you have mentioned.. you get the suzuki reliability and refined engine.. Assuming your budget can extend upto 2L as you have mentioned D390 in the list..

The bike is a heaven to ride and can do 110s all day long.. the sitting stance is also perfect. the only drawback it might possibly have is the weight. On the otherhand, it will not be pushed away by the winds.. and not to forget, it has twin cylinders which have advantages of its own...

other than that, if you want a cheaper option, we have the CBR250 (I don't think they have any more bikes on sale as they are going to launch a new refreshed model) which again has a reliable engine but the sitting stance will give stress to your hands compared to Inazuma/Dukes twins..

If you want cheaper options in the range of 90,000 to 1,10,000, you have the Karizma twins and the P200NS.. the Karizmas have a proven engine from the year 2003.. used to be the perfect tourers till they decided to change the handle bars.. The p200NS might not be comfortable for the pillion but for a short ride, I guess it is a perfect bike...

something within 90000, you can go for the Yamaha Fazer, the Suzuki GS150R or the Suzuki gixxer 155... you have the Suzuki and Yamaha reliability and they sure know how to make bikes

my humble request would be for you to test ride the bikes with your wife as a pillion so that you can know which bike suits you and your better half the best

God Bless you both and I wish you a safe ride to Leh

Welcome to xBhp sir. First of all hats off to you for the ride you have planned.

I would agree with what others have said. Upwards of 2L a Suzuki would be great. Also you have an exotic option in Hyosung Aquila 250.

Karizma ZMR would be the reliable one and it's a proven tourer. CBR 250 is also a good option to consider in mid range.
