    Hello everyone,

My name is Samarth, I'm a 22-year-old resident of Bandra working with a major media company. I've never been quite the bike crazy type of guy. But for some reason over the last three months I've become sort of obssessed with them. So two weeks ago, after appropriate research, I treated myself to a bright red Yamaha Fazer. I went ahead and purchased a new bike against the advice of many who feared I would ruin it. But I'd heard anecdotes of people who took immediately to new bikes, so I took the plunge. I have ridden bicycles when I was smaller and have had some practice on a Kinetic when I was about 14 (Clear open roads, and a pillion to teach).

I'm a little intimidated by my bike (rightly so) and haven't ridden it so far. I had a friend drive it down for me from Excellent Yamaha, Andheri. Tragically, due to my hectic work schedule, I have been unable to find time to learn how to ride it. My friend who helped drive it down for me is free on Mondays, but I'm only free on Saturdays. Many of my colleagues offered to let me learn on their bikes, but since they need them for work, I didn't have the heart to risk damaging them.

So anyhoo, that's the story... of course, if any passionate bikers out there living nearby would like to help me out on my Saturday off, I'd be grateful. Look forward to interacting with everyone out on the forum.

And I forgot to mention, my favourite bike is the Triumph Speed Triple.

Have read it repeatedly Sorry if the question is stupid, but once you've started your engine, do you switch the starter lever back to off? Do you have to use it every time you start your bike?

In general all new bikes are coming with a separate engine kill switch. The sole purpose of this switch is to switch your engine off. After switching it off you need to put it back in original position to be able to start it again using the self start button.

Apart from this engine kill switch you can use key to switch the ignition off and then again use to switch on the ignition and then self start button to start the engine. I hope I made it clear.

I wasn't referring to the starter switch, but the starter lever. It is used to start a cold engine (according to the manual) as this requires a richer air-fuel mixture.

Samarth, welcome to the bikers world, I'm explaining these steps as simple as possible, though you may or may not know most of these, I'm penning them down. Do let me know if you need any more help on any of the steps from the ones listed below or feel free to add your own.

                Morning Start
                1. Turn the ignition key to the position ON
                2. Open up the fuel cock to MAIN
                3. Press the START button (to be located on your right hand side below the throttle)
                4. Run the vehicle in idle for about 20-30 seconds
                5. Leave the fuel in ON position
                6. Engage the clutch (the left hand side lever)
                7. Engage the gear to 1st (the left lever on to your left leg)
                8. Throttle the vehicle very slightly to 1 or 2 mm in anti clock wise (right hand side)
                9. Release the clutch gradually & you'll find the motorcycle in moving stage
                10. Keep upshifting/downshifting the gears as per motorcycle manual

Precautions to consider before step 1
                A. Ensure there's sufficient (more than half tank) of fuel in the fuel tank
                B. Ensure that the NEUTRAL light (most probably GREEN in color) is lighted

                    (From wiki)

                    > Some carburetors do not have a choke but instead use a mixture enrichment circuit, or enrichener. Typically used on small engines, notably motorcycles, enricheners work by opening a secondary fuel circuit below the throttle valves. This circuit works exactly like the idle circuit, and when engaged it simply supplies extra fuel when the throttle is closed.

I believe this is the relevant bit as far as my bike goes.... I have already had leg guards fitted on my bike. I have purchased a helmet, but I have not yet bought jacket/gloves/pads/etc. I am thinking of getting knee pads, but I don't know whether I want a jacket. Its too hot to wear leather. Are any kind of breathable jackets available (In Mumbai) that don't compromise safety?

@Samarth_M: Congrats on the new bike! Don't worry, you will soon be very comfortable riding it. I suggest you take his help in an open area for a day or two to get acquainted with the gearshifts etc., then move out onto the roads by yourself wearing atleast a helmet-initially it will be a bit scary but self help is the best help!
You have done a wise thing by installing crash guards immediately.
As for your query on the kickstarter, use it when the engine has not been started for a long time, eg.overnight etc.
So, it would be advisable to use the kickstarter the first time in the morning, and electric button starter for the rest of the day.
Though some people do have a habit of using the button starter all the time, this does put some load on the battery/starter motor in the long run.
All the best&feel free to ask us anything you wanna know!
