My bike doesn't have a kick starter... I was referring to the starter lever.

I guess you're referring to the choke or as some manufacturers call it the cold start lever. Its usually on the left handlebar along with the switch gear. The choke is used in cold conditions to send a richer fuel mixture (as in more fuel than in the "normal" air fuel mixture) so that the engine can fire. If you keep that continuously on then the engine will die because it is not getting enough air to burn the fuel.

The owner's manual usually says pull the lever and start and hold it till the engine warms up and then release it (its usually spring operated and goes back when released). This is recommended for very cold conditions or when the engine has not been started for a long time. If you start it regularly and the weather is not too cold you can try starting it without the choke lever on. The next time you start the bike follow aargee's protocol. If the bike doesn't start with a 10-15 second push of the start lever then pull the choke lever on and try. Remember that the starter motor uses the battery and if you use it many times in one go it might drain the battery and you'll have to jump start the engine (set the bike in motion and put it first gear/second gear).
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle.

Welcome To XBHP. You seem a lil scared with regard to riding. Spend some time with her (your bike) and im sure everything will be just fine. And ya Read the owners manual thoroughly to clear some basic doubts abt the bike first.
