Hello guys,

After 14 months of flawless performance, my CBR has developed a fault.

I was on a month's annual leave for the Leh ride and returned to Rajkot on 08 Jul. The bike had been under covers during this period, in a safe environment. There was no chance of anybody fiddling with it.

When I switched on the ignition, the standard checks went thru properly - the FI light lighting up, the speedo windinging down from 188 to zero, all proper. The bike started on the first try without a glitch. But when I started riding away, the speedo did not spool up to indicate the speed. Also, the odo and trip seemed to be slaved to the speedo as these two indicators too did not work. Everything else is working - the clock, the RPM gauge, the fuel gauge and the temp gauge.

The bateery seems fine as all battery related functions are fine - the horn, indicators, brake lights, main lamp (high and low both) and the starter switch.

My friendly neighborhood ASC chap is away due to a personal issue so has not checked the bike yet.

No wires etc seem to be out of place, everything is normal.

Any ideas??

Hey manish, did you took any fall on your CBR in past where the speedo console sensor had taken the impact, or was your speedo console area went through some high pressure washing, as this both things can disturb the sensor setting or can make it kaput. I had been through the same problem with my R15 as it went off kaput in nov 2011 exactly 1 year after my first crash which was in dec 2010, and got the similar issues, and since mine was in warranty so replaced it for free.otherwise the cost was like 1300/- INR.

I think its the speedo sensor in your case too.

i dont think the speedo or odo reading come from the rear wheel, as far as i know any bike has the speedo/odo sensor and cable hooked on to the front wheel, else you would be clocking kilometers even when doing burnout and running the bike on main stand.

I have the same prob in my r15 since a week most probably its a loose connection in my case as the speedo sometimes starts reading speeds but goes off if i pick up speed too fast.

There can always be a difference between what you feel and the truth . The other bike I know with a similar arrangement is the Suzuki GS150R. The biggest benefit of this is that you can see your speed even when you wheelie .

just checked and i was most definitely wrong
it is on the rear wheel i think coz i cant see a speedo cable on the front....

It seems like your speedo cable is out of comission for some reason. Loose connections perhaps?

No speedo cable on either the front or rear wheel in the CBR!

I read this on another forum posted by one of xbhp members aargee. This is posted originally somewhere in xbhp too I guess.

So could be the problem with the sensor? Or perhaps a loose connection at the sensor..
Since I don't own the CBR250 its not my place to comment. Just thought of bringing this to your notice.

There is no cable per se; cannot see any sensor for the rear wheel...

No fall on ANY two wheeler/crash in a four or four+ wheeler till date, touch wood. The bike was resting within the unit for 32 days. No pressure washing till date, I do the hand wash myself.

Now, from the pic, it is clear that the sensor does not monitor the crankshaft. The placement seems to show that it monitors the transmission!

Haven't been to the madhe ghat but have driven a 4 wheeler on both the roads (via Pabe ghat and via Nasrapur) till Velhe village. I had been there in January this year via Pabe ghat and we came back via Nasrapur. The roads were bad... really bad. We had gone in a car. The road was filled with rocks the size of a cricket ball all the way in the ghat section. But this road has the most awesome scenery. And right now there should be greenery everywhere.
The other way from Nasrapur till Velhe will be ok roads. Haven't gone further than that.
Again this was in January.
