I am writing this message to let u all know that i am leaving pune. I am gonna miss you all especially our rides and long discussions at g2g. Vishwas ji thank you very much for sharing your expertise and for your FREE advise on biking , non biking issues.
I am gonna miss my riding buddies with whom i have clocked over 3000+ kms. Thanks Imran , Gaurav , Viper , kuntal , Prabhat , Eshan , Zimbly ,amrit , aman and all of you for tolerating me on rides ( No break , No photography especially )
I had a nice time with you guys and i hope to see you guys soon when i come down to pune again.

Hey!

Route: Pune-Gokarna-Dandeli-Doodhsagar falls-Pune

Day 0: Leave Pune by 2 PM, reach Gokarna by midnight
Day 1: Chill at Gokarna, visit Yana and reach Dandeli by evening
Day 2: Relax at Dandeli - full day
Day 3: Leave Dandeli early morning, reach Doodhsagar falls. Finish sightseeing etc and leave for Pune. Stop en route somewhere near Sawantwadi
Day 4: Sawantwadi to Pune

Q1)Is Day 0 plan feasible? We plan to take the Pune-Dharwad-Yellapur-Ankola route. We will try and reach Dharwad by 8 PM. Is it safe to travel on NH63 at night so that we can reach Gokarna by 11PM, or at max by midnight? We are meeting friends there who will be coming from Bangalore, so we want to reach on Day 0 itself so as not to spoil the next day's plan. Does this seem like a stretch?

Q2)I wanted info on what is worth visiting near Dandeli, but I aleady got that thanks to Viper, karthikpai and mahesh Has anyone been to Yana? Is it worth a visit?

Q3) On the return from Sawantwadi to Pune, we would want to come through some Konkan territory. Anyone know the current condition of NH17(new NH66) between Goa and Mumbai? Also, which would be a good ghat to get back onto the NH4, somewhere after Ratnagiri?

Any other comments/suggestions are also very welcome.

1) Day 0 - Will be a stretch for sure. You can make it to Hubli in around 7 hours at sane speeds. Beyond that, the raod conditions might not be that great. The whole road passes through dense forests and there is hardly anyone on the road. Dont do that stretch alone at night. If something goes wrong with the bike, you need someone to lend a helping hand.

2) Yana is surely worth a visit. I think there is a tar road to the top now. Earlier, it used to be a "kucchha" road, and was a lot more fun. The rocks at the top are very different from what I have seen elsewhere.

3) Panji - Sawantwadi is really good.

@kaushik We recently did the Chiplun-Patan-Umbraj route several times on our rides where we had to get back to NH4. This route has a mix of good and occasional patches of slightly bad roads. This can be a good route to take after Ratnagiri.
The road connecting to NH4 via Mahabaleshwar has a really bad patch of about 10kms on the Poladpur side.

All the best for your plans. Do keep in touch about the regiment you get. Your back is already hurt so I recommend that you choose the AOC or ASC. In the infantry, half your time would be spent in the Rashtriya Rifles and the other half at high altitude. Any help you need about anything, just give a call. I will be available at Rajkot (^@$#$((^$ or Pune (^@#*##&%).

So this route is a little longer, by approx 20 kms. Because of this, I was considering either through Mahabaleshwar or through Warandha ghat. @kaushik. Chipun road is worth the extra 20 Km and is far better than poladpur-mahabaleshwar. 17KMS of mess would make your bike road-sick. You'll be glad to choose any other road other than Poladpur way.

+1 to that. @kaushik True.. riding on that bad road near Poladpur made me remember the roads enroute Khardungla. Only this time I had a ninja and its seat is not a boon on bad roads. Felt like someone was continuously punching my behind for half an hour.

Thought I should share it wuith you guys

I remember, on our kashid beach ride(sometime in october). we came back to pune via poladpur-mahabi road. The conditions and our reactions.
1. It stated raining and was already sunset
2. the moment this bad road was over. GT007 literally jumped on his bike. yayyying all the way (by that time our butts were singing the LP song 'I've become so numb' :P )
3. The sight during sunset. hues of orange skies , lush green dense forest/trees . The sight was stupendously breathtaking.. I'm not lying but I was seriously I wished we'd get to see some jurassic era animals. resembled that
4. Encountered insanely dense fog. visiblility hardly couple of meters. Imran almost hit a tree ( that was scary) GT007 was leading thanks to CBR250r headlights. Hands numb due to cold and butt paining from the torture a few kms back.
5. reached mahabi at 8:30 and then followed to pune finally by 10:30 ish.

Documents
a. Valid Driving License: MUST have and carry at all times
b. Bike Registration Papers: Original or Attested Photocopy
c. Bike Tax Certificate: Original or Attested Photocopy
d. Bike Insurance: Preferably a comprehensive insurance, personal insurance would be a plus.
e. PUC Certificate: A valid PUC certificate; especially if touring along with the group to pollution sensitive/monitored areas.

Safety Gear
a. Helmet: Has to be in good condition and preferably ISI/DOT certified
b. Thick Jacket/Riding Jacket: Must have inbuilt armour or external armour is also allowed
c. Gloves: Must cover vital points like knuckles and wrist. Cut/half gloves not allowed
d. Knee Guards: Either bionic or regular flex type. Should be worn inside trousers if non bionic.
e. Riding Boots/Sports Shoes/Army Boots: Anything that covers the foot well.
f. There is nothing that can better the protection of a full leather suit (if affordable). The preferred and most recommended piece of protection that your money can buy. Not compulsory though.
