Offbeat - an online magazine has come up with an issue this time dealing with responsible travel which I thought was super relevant to us. You can download the magazine pdf for free here:
It's a good read!
Here's an excerpt from the editorial...
April-July-2011
Who amongst us doesn't like to travel? We are hardly out of one trip, and we start contemplating the next already. Work often seems like something we do between our exciting journeys to see the world. We plan months in advance to make sure we get the best deals - the cheapest air tickets, the best rooms at rates we can afford and in the most exotic of destinations. As we head out by the million, our need to wander is supported by a fast growing multi-billion dollar tourist industry.
This wanderlust unfortunately comes at a price– scarce resources are groaning under the weight of tourists, animals are scrambling to find cover, locals in paradise are wishing they were elsewhere, and the garbage heap just keeps growing.
Now, more than ever before perhaps, is the time to examine the impact our travel has on the world at large and the people and places we leave behind, if we are to keep the experience alive.
This quarter, we find out how to minimize our footprints by asking what we can do and meeting the people who are pioneering responsible and sustainable travel.
In this issue of the Offbeat, we
• Look at what responsible travel means beyond the colour green and the word ‘eco’,
• Worry over the impact our jungle camping is having on wildlife
• Meet erstwhile Bodo separatists who’ve made Manas one of the richest bio-diversity hotspots in India
• Discover an alternate travel community that meets over coffee and conversations in the art-heart of Delhi
• Visit the salt marshes of Kutch with social entrepreneur Kalyan Akkippedi
• Find Kabir in the hinterland of India
And lots more...
Get off the highways and take this responsible journey with us. May we discover inspiration.
