xBhp was born more than 16 years ago and since then we've had a chance to ride or drive hundreds of machines running on two wheels or four wheels, and sometimes even three wheels. We are not done yet, and this list is still growing. In these pages, we take a deep dive in the treasure trove of our ride experiences and bring you all that we have ridden or driven.

Different strokes for different folks is a well-known proverb. It is one of the most basic instincts that we display as human beings which makes us diverse. Our varied choices form the basis of our nature and separate us individually from each other. And the fact we all are different from each other and have our own opinions about things, that we have managed to expand and transform objects in ways we like them. We go with what we like.

This is precisely the reason why, as motorcycle enthusiasts, we get attracted to so many motorcycles because there’s a place for each one of them in somebody’s heart. It could be unique and precious or just too rare that you might be compelled to believe that the thing deserves to remain in existence.

And so we did come across a motorcycle rare enough to get our attention. It is an unusual motorcycle not just because of the old technology it incorporates, but because its production life was short enough that it has been quite rare from the beginning. What we have with us is a Royal Enfield with a diesel engine.

Commonly known as the diesel bullet, this one-of-a-kind RE came with a 325cc single cylinder engine that runs on diesel. What makes it truly unique is the fact that it is the only diesel motorcycle in India put into production. Producing around 6.5 BHP, the power figure is not more than a 100cc commuter motorcycle, however, the torque of 15 NM is comparable to today’s 150cc to 180cc motorcycles. It is clear from these numbers that the performance is nothing to write about except that it returned a claimed 70 kmpl of fuel efficiency. Now, this is as good as a small commuter motorcycle.

We got the opportunity to spend some valuable time with this one-off bullet, thanks to Mr. Avinash Siddhu who was kind enough to spare his time and allowed us to experience his Royal Enfield with a different heart.

The Diesel Bullet

Even with the slightest interest in motorcycles one would be able to notice that it is not a usual engine at the centre of the recognizable bodywork. The diesel unit looks significantly different from its petrol counterpart and has a visibly small cylinder head. It is air-cooled and has a 4-speed gearbox on the right side as well as the neutral finder both of which are the same as in the outdated Cast Iron petrol engine.

The diesel engine is housed inside the similar single downtube chassis and the rest of the design of the motorcycle is also unchanged. However, Mr. Avinash has made certain modifications to enhance the overall visual appeal of this motorcycle. The blue paint is similar to what we saw in the Classic 500 when it debuted few years back. The knee pads on either side of the fuel tank are also taken from the Classic range. The seats are separate units for the rider and the pillion with the spring mechanism for the old-school look. At the back, there’s a pair of gas-charged shockers that noticeably improves the riding comfort.

It is started by a kick starter in typical fashion, but once it is powered up, the motorcycle generates a distinctive exhaust note which is more mechanical than the legendary thud of the old bullet.

It is definitely an interesting piece of machinery and not everybody’s cup of tea since there is nothing like it in the market. Maintaining it is a dedicated task in itself and for this reason, we applaud the owner for his commitment towards this diesel bullet.

And if you’re someone who is fascinated by these absolutely rare motorcycles and would love to see how it feels to have one, you can definitely search them on OLX and we are quite positive that you will find one.
