What I do to be a safe rider?
not keeping in mind other important factors in mind is actually going to make you unsafe.

Seeing is believing holds true for riders. You notice the car which is in front of you or few vehicles ahead suddenly taking a wild maneuver. This should automatically set alarm bell ringing for you instantly. Probably the driver may have noticed a dead animal, a big pothole, a large brick/stone & did the wild maneuver to avoid it. You must instantly think of changing the lane.

Overtaking. Overtaking is done when the vehicle ahead of you is going slow than you & you want it to move away/give way. The key point is speed. I have seen people overtaking Bus / trucks at leisurely as if their bike is drawing power from the truck/bus. Overtake the vehicle at a comfortable better speed. Oh yes! As much as possible, try to overtake from right so that the driver can see you comfortably through the Right RVM.

Overtaking is actually asking for permission. I may have not toured much but whatever experience I have on highways is that truckers will, generally, let you pass, if you ask permission. Day or night, flash your lights so that the driver notices you on the RVM. Wait for him to give you the signal to go ahead. It has always happened with me, while I have toured HP, UK or Rajasthan that truckers will generally guide you to overtake. The key word is patience. This is highly important while you are riding in narrow hilly roads. If there is a left hander & you want to overtake any vehicle from right which is actually making you blind to the curve/turn, wait for the driver to give you signal. Foremost, make him notice that you are behind him & want to overtake.

Never ever ride directly behind a car or any vehicle. One should be either to left or to right with comfortable space left incase the vehicle/car does sudden move or braking.
If you are passing through any village or any human settlement right on the sides of the highway you will come across many villagers, either on foot or some type of vehicle/two wheels, who are trying to cross over from one side of the road to other. Some will wait but most of them will try to be either the likes of Paan Singh Tomar/ P T Usha or slow moving turtle & will cross the road. There is no sureshot way to avoid a collision rather than slowing down. If you see someone waiting to cross, assume that he/she is going to do a last minute mad gold rush. Just be prepare for his/her hara-kiri act & slow down.

Good one, Especially about the Rvm it's absolutely true, I have seen people folding RVM especially in 220 which I hate it.Even I own P220 But never ever folded my Rvm Even while I check the Top speed.RVM is very important and it's our Third Eye

Note:People own P220 stop folding RVM looks pathetic

Thanks Avinash. Yes, RVM even though RVM of a 220 vibrates a lot, still gives me ample information while overtaking, changing lane etc

today i was able to avert to accidents due to anticipation.reaching home i was thinking was i supposed die today?

first incident-reaching highway i settled for a constant 70 kmph.this highway which is close to our house cannot be considered as a proper highway,as it is mostly through suburbs, with everykind of rider and veichle travelling.suddenly i see a old couple is trying to cross the road,as they were old ,i kinda realized they will not be able to run across,so i alerted them with horn and pass switch, and i gradually slowed down, they waved at me to keep on going,i accelerated suddenly a young chap jumps infront of my ride from nowhere, the worst part he kinda got confused in the midway and stood still for a while i thought i am going to experience my first crash, but at the last moment i took an ugly turn and stopped short of hitting divider by skidding.when i looked back the old couple were asking if i was okay but the chap kept on walking non-chalantly waving hi to a friend waiting on the other side.

my fault,i was riding a 2 wheeler on a indian road.

2nd incident-i was tail-gating a kizashi keeping a safe distance,at the last moment i saw its turn indicator lit-up and it took sudden turn.atleast one should alert the following vheicel well before taking turn, but it was okay until a discover suddenly popped up infront of me from the turn ,which was prohibited,i slammed the brake heard before i could realize something.luckily both of we survived as he was speeding and the drum brakes of passion somehow worked without skidding.

quite a day of adventure on road.

and the question remains why do i race?

            Damn....That was an fantastic article...

Its very true that RVM's are very important factor while riding. It can save you from any minor/major accidents. Plus as you said proper vision & timely action will also help you ride safe on the road.

All that matters is that the rider is alert at all times. Coz even if there is no fault of yours, still you can be the one to suffer. Its always better for riders to pre-calculate speed / direction of the vehicles moving in front and accordingly be the judge whether to overtake or not.

Regarding Truckers : even i have experienced that truckers will always guide you to go ahead if you give them the proper signal that you want to overtake.
Ride Hard !!! Ride Safe!!! Enjoy every moment on your machine !!! Cheers....

              Amazing artice,
being aware of our surroundings can save us from many accidents and the rvm's play a major part in that.We need to stop bothering about how it looks and once think about how we would look on a hospital bed if we didnt have the RVM's to tell us what is behind us.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a Ride!' -Hunter S. Thompson

Sayank: Since you were aware of the situation, you were saved. Now tell me in that exact scenario what you would have done that extra bit to be more aware. RVM. Whenever you are slowing down after doing a good speed always have a look at your RVM. This will give you a better idea that are you the only one to have noticed the obstruction or others too. If others haven't noticed, try giving some signal as an heads up to them. If that doesn't help then try to figure out way out of both, the oncoming obstruction & the approaching vehicle right behind you. I know that these are lot of information to process in that quick time but with experience, I bet, you will be able to do it better.

All: Thanks for reading the article. I am not looking for any brownie points here. Just that I want everyone to share my onroad experience. Thanks a lot brothers

about rvm,i see most of the pulsars, apache without them.
main reason being it helps in cutting through traffic with out bruising car, secondly they find it sporty.
i have seen people using one rvm, although looks wird but it serves both purpose well.
and the question remains why do i race?

Yes, since now that most of us so accustomed to using RVM, if we ride a bike without RVMs, it feels very uncomfortable.

Hey man! You can just spread the word. You can't expect that everyone will read it. Most of them won't since these articles looks like "lecture" to everyone. But I seriously feel that newbies should read these type of stuff. will really help them a lot. Then again, we can only hope for a better world.
