    Cycling journey with Montra downtown

    Hello friends, I am new to cycling world and have recently bought Montra downtown. I have been a lazy person all along my life and overweight as well. I have tried losing weight with gym, diet, etc but i am not able to stick with anything. Now i have taken up cycling.

    Somehow i know that this will stick. There are two reason for my confidence, first being i love bike riding and second is i love travelling. So i have decided to replace bike with my cycle. Hope to get thousands on odo and get fit as well.

    Congrats.

    Very nice. Now post pictures of your bike being ridden and not parked inside your house

      Thanks for approving thread. I have started getting up early at 7 am to ride since last few days. Normally i use to wake up at 9 am . I am already doing 10+ kms rides.

      Few points from my side about the bike:
      1. Its very light weight and nice to ride bike.
      2. Gears are good except from 1 to 2 at front. Maybe with more miles it might get better. Also at this price point i don't expect too much.

      Question:
      1. For lubing the chain, what lube/oil should i use. I have bike gear oil which i use for my bike's chain. Can I use that?

      Yesterday being a sunday, went at evening for a ride in my area. Below is a pic from my ride yesterday evening.

        2. Gears won't get better with use like on a motorcycle Two things. One, at your first service, get them to tune your front derailer, you can do it yourself as well by watching YouTube videos and lots of patience. Two, with time you will learn how to switch gears properly. You need to ease off for a mite, while shifting, else there is too much of strain on the drivetrain. Even then, the front will never shift as seamlessly as the rear.

        1. You get specialist cycle oils. Motorcycle lube is too viscous and will attract more dirt. Something like sewing machine oil is too thin and will not hold. Of course, you can still use both if you wish instead of spending a bomb on cycle specific lubes.

              Journey is going good. Able to do 20kms now. Will keep on incrementing by 5kms every weekend till 50kms. Have also started stretching after every ride.

              Crossing at signals is the biggest challenge, bigger than a hill i suppose. No one wants a slow moving vehicle in front of them, people breaking signals, etc.

              With winter approaching, mornings are cool and so it feels very pleasant to ride in it.

                Went for a 35 kms ride this weekend. I am enjoying cycling very much. My riding speed is increasing with time. I am currently riding 3 times a week. Planning to go for 50 in two weeks time.

                Got this chain cleaner n lube from Amazon for 600 bucks total for 125 ml bottles each. It's from looplube company.

                          Its been long time since I updated this thread. Currently i am riding only on weekends and able to do 50kms rides, although speed is in average of 15km/hr. Maybe because pune has lot of hilly terrain in 15km range of it. Also I am seeing lot of people taking to cycling which is a very good sign.

                          Everytime I pass a fuel station on my cycle, a smile comes on my face .

                          Today went for a ride towards Pirangut, which is approx 25kms from my house. During the ride, there was one steep upward slope. I was in 3rd gear at back and 2nd at front. Stretch was of 1km and after 700m I was not able to pedal anymore as last 300m was very steep. Instead started walking that part. Roads are not good after hinjewadi and felt need of MTB. On bike it doesnt feel that much but its very different on cycle. Attaching couple of pics from today's ride.

                            Always nice to see people enjoy cycling so much!

                            About the steep climb: Doesn't this bike have a triple ring crankset?
                            If you want to climb up a hill, called grinding uphill, you're supposed to be at the lowest (smallest) gear in the front as well as the back (biggest).

                            Veterans, please correct me if I'm wrong

                              Yes, you are right. Problem was did not got enough time to change to lowest gear in time. As to change to lowest gear we need a bit of decline/flat so that gear can be changed with low pressure on pedal. This being a entry level model, changing from 2 to 1 at front requires effort if you have already started incline.
