Had to separate my Firefox Edge's fork from the frame today, to transport the bike in my rather small Santro. Found that the headset (threadless) had some dirt/sand mixed with grease in it. Now that I've put it back together the bearings make some sound characteristic of dirt rubbing against the moving components. I plan to clean and apply some lubricant. What lube should I use? I have some SAE 90 Automotive Gear Oil with me. Would that do?

Also I dont know if I've put the caged balls correctly. The cage has 2 sides, one in which the balls are protruding and the other in which the cage is higher than the balls. Which side should go where? I've put them back such that the balls are facing towards the crown race and seal (the cages are resting on head tube races) You may refer to headset entry in wikipedia for some images. Please guide, as to what is the right installation.

    hey buddy !

the lubricant you mentioned is okay..now the installation part..the side in which the balls are protruding should contact the head set cups. the other side where the cage is higher should touch the crown race.

btw , where you plan to take your ride?!!! somewhere up north i guess!

and sorry for the late reply. was out of town, had gone to my native in kerala..after all the swine flu scare in pune, i chickened out !!! heh heh

hey Ron, if youre interested in a not too expensive FS bike try out the ACT Ryder 107 or 108. I've ridden both and have found them to be quite ok.

both the brands, when it comes to worksmanship are at par with each other, you can go for either brands. the firefox viper has one hi tech feature , that being the hydroformed downtube. other than that, both are the same.

as i mentioned earlier, the FS bikes rob energy. you be the judge !! i guess you're more inclined towards the 'coolness factor' eh?!!
@AI: Ummm.. not exactly.. i did have the swing 21 when i was a kid.. it was a good bike.. n i guess its the same comfort i'm looking for. I wouldn't mind goin for the hardtail ones. Lets see what comes up

And thanx a ton for all the help.

    Hi All

New to this thread infact I am surprised how on earth did I miss this one for this long.

I am from Hyderabad and love cycling more than anything else and thanks to a group, doing more of it in the last few months. I try to cycle down to work atleast 2-3 times a week. The new workplace is like 12kms(the previous one was 18kms).

Best part about the cycles - light on the pocket, helps you get lighter, eco-friendly and gives you peace of mind.

Don't have any fancy bikes. A Hero Ranger Max for the regular use and a very very old road bike with the weekend road meets etc. These two have been more than paisa vasool for me

For those who are new to cycling or are planning to start, I would always recommend you to go for the basic desi ones and go for the new fancy ones once you have the experience and the strength to enjoy and exploit its capabilities. For the moment I am sticking with my desi ones.

The ranger I have, I use it for the gorceries, see frnds and yes also have a provision for a lill seat in the front on which I get to gives rides to my kids and believe it or not, they seem it enjoy it more than a bike ride or a drive in the car. I grew up going almost everywhere with my dad on a similar seat on his Raliegh.

I'm not very inclined towards hardtail ones.. Although i'd be using it for urban riding mostly... I liked the Viper as well.. and i'm inclined towards the Reloaded as well.. So basically.. I'M CONFUSED AS HELL!!

Please bear with me and help me out yar..
