Was getting baleno too but esteem is easier in the long run and on spares.

I still prefer 2 wheels as I feel caged in 4 wheels. I mainly bought it to hone my driving skills and for parents.

      Hi,
I owned (rather my father owned, and I learnt to drive in) a Premier padmini (1988-sold in 2010 - rather with a heavy heart), followed by Hyundai Santro (bought in 1999 Still owned). Later bought a Ford Ikon 1.6Zxi (2001-2005), then changed to Skodfa Octavia Elegance 1.8TDI (2005-2012, sold unwillingly after about 1 Lakh Kms on the odo). Now driving the Hyundai Neo Fluidic Elantra (since 2012). My favorite was the skoda though my first love was and is the santro.

        I too own a 2003 Zen Mpfi
You'll love this car for sure.
I too bought it second hand from an acquaintance but it was well maintained.
It's been 6 years and 87000K.M.S but still puts a smile on my face everytime I turn the key..

Guys need your help. Between swift zxi and zest xms which one do you think will be a better buy based on following requirements:
          1.fun to drive
          2.35km daily highway commute
3.80% of the time only the front seats would be occupied. The remaining will be with two passengers and/or groceries.
          4.hassle free ownership.

Other than the boot space, what advantage does zest have over the swift? How does the infotainment system in the xms trim compare to the one in swift zxi? And any news on when the swift facelift is going to be launched?

Swift any day. It is one of the most fun to drive car which is also dynamically sorted. Plus it is backed by maruti's After sales service, hence ownership hassles wont be much. Swift also holds much better resale value than TATA.

Zest looks good and is a huge step forward for TATA, however, since it is new, it is good to not buy it so soon.

BTW my first car was a Ritz vxi. I drove it for 3 months, and one day out of curiosity walked into Honda showroom and took a test drive of the City. It just blew me away with its power, handling, dynamics, space, the entire package.

Sold my Ritz on OLX and brought the new City ivtec. It is the 2nd car in my family after my Ritz

Same Situation here. Looking to replace my Hyundai i20 (Magna- Fluidic model). I am utterly confused between Zest and New i20(which seems too pricy). I never liked Desire's styling(I would prefer a swift over Desire).
Zest XT trim seems the most bang for bucks. And yes, my dad's previous Vista Quadrajet(2009 model) was a brilliant car, so no problem with Tata for me. ASS Quality is good at my place.
I advice you to look for the quality of ASS. Ask other owners, meet the Mechs in the ASS, ask random queries and observe their attitude and knowledge. Then decide. Frankly, if you get a Maruti, you are actually on safe side, even if you dont get proper mechs.
              Fun to Drive:
              Petrol- swift
              Diesel- Zest

Thanks for the reply guys. For me it has to be a petrol car because of my usage and also the free revving nature of petrol engines. With abs and airbags being a must(for a motorcycle enthusiast like us, safety and convenience are by far the most important aspects for buying a car), fun to drive options under 7L are limited. The i20 was left out because of the uninspiring 1.2l petrol engine and steering. The swift in the petrol guise is definitely the better buy, comparable to even the more costly polo 1.2tsi in terms of performance. But the zest is hard to ignore costing 30k less and offering more space. The steering, gearbox and low end performance are also well appreciated. I think it will have a bit more body roll and the mid to top end might be lacking compared to swift. Also Goa has only one T.A.S.S, so that is a concern.

edit- How's the quality of the stock music system in swift? It is 4 speakers+2 tweeters right?

Havnt tried the new Revotron engine though. So I couldnt compare with Swift's. But old petrol engines were seriously underpowered from TATA and i20.
Music System in swift is ok. You could anyday get yourself good set of Speakers/Woofers. No big deal. But Zest's is brilliant. You dont need any upgrade.

Music system is pretty ok. One thing to remember is Revotron engine in TATA is the same petrol engine used earlier in Indica Xeta and Vista. It is completely reworked with a turbo. However, if you look at the competition, others are able to make as much or more power without the turbo.

If fun to drive is a criteria, may I also suggest Toyota Liva 1.5 petrol. It has the same Etios 1.5 litre engine. Coupled with low weight, it is a stonker. Only downside I see is not so exciting interiors. They may be dull and boring and not look premium, but they are nicely put together and will hold itself for a long time. Toyota ownership is a delight.

Fun to drive petrol hatches are
                    Swift
                    Brio
                    Liva 1.5

Why not take Brio also into account. Brio top end is cheaper than swift top end. Its a super refined Honda engine. No problems whatsover. Terrific car to drive. Sleek gears and rev liking engine. Go kart like car to drive and great handler as well. 30000 kms in 2.5 years and I can vouch for the Brio.

Cost cutting is a major downer on the liva. Sportivo costs around 30k more than the swift, misses on some features and has a light steering. As good as the engine is, it is not vfm and the flimsy feel seals the deal.

Brio is definitely something to look into. How is the ride quality at highway speeds? Is it bouncy?

Brio is a hoot. It isn't bouncy and being a Honda handling and dynamics is sorted. Tiny boot space is a hindrance especially if you plan to do highway trips.

Honda A$$ is quite good. They listen to everything you have to say and make it a point to resolve it even if you are not interested.

With maruti, Hyundai and Honda having proven A.S.S, how is the actual cost of ownership of each brand. One thing I know is that Hyundai cost keeps on increasing. Honda is unknown to me as not many people I know own a brio(all are city owners).

Will try and get a TD of swift, ritz, brio, grand, elite and zest in quick successions to try to make an informed decision. Will update about the same.

Brio's suspension is ok. Not too plush since it offers better handling. At slow speeds its a bit bouncy but not too much. At high speeds its not too much of a problem. But all in all a VFM car. The suspension at front is good only the back is bouncy at low speeds. Since you are syaing you would mostly travel alone shouldn't be a problem. Tiny boot space I agree but I fit in one very big trolley and a big bag in the boot for airport trips. So if you fit in luggage well then no problem with boot. It can fit in 3-4 travel bags depending on size.
