  • First try in making a Go-Kart

This is the first go-kart project am doing now,we don't have much of the instruments and tools,so had to make adjustments.Didnt even had a table to work on(there's a long story behind it)

there are 3 guys in our group who are making this go-kart.

I am enclosing the pictures of it for the time being, didn't get the engine now, will try to arrange it quite a few days
engine will be gear less (accelerator motion).

Have completed the chassis and the steering part of the vehicle.
I know that the wheelbase of the vehicle is big,but we made it but kinda estimating the length of the rider and other things, some of them could be mended later on.

I have bought this disc brake setup, can anyone tell me how to operate the caliper of the master cylinder with a cable connected to the pedal(haven't made it though, was giving it a a thought)
will make a hub to hold the disc plate.

any other suggestion would be appreciated.

      Hi,

nice to see someone taking up such a project. I have a friend in your college too.
Why have you opted for a such a huge wheelbase? Are you getting a similarly powerful engine for it?
When we built a gokart, our moto was to keep everything as driver-centric as possible. So we kept the WB shorter and the wheels closer too. What size wheels are those? Would be great to know some more details. And keep up the good work
You can take the ride away from me but you cannot take the rider out of my soul.........

get a tandem brake unit from maruti.

If you seal of one outlet, you can use a single brake pedal for stopping all the wheels simultaneously.

the weight of the whole chassis with the wheels on it is around 30-40 kgs, i guess the disc brake will be able to stop the vehicle without any glitch.

the brake setup is of r15,the weight of r15 is about 125 kgs, and the disc brake can handle the load till how many kmph? dont know even if i consider 60kmph

if i consider the weight of the vehicle around 70 kgs, then it should easily last at the speed of 107 kmph.

and dont have much money to spend of new braking setup!
I knw that at hight speed cornering the back chassis part will try to throw the vehicle away from the track, didnt think about weight distribution,as didnt knew about it.

Actually,we dont have any engine now
and have left space in the front to accommodate tall riders, the total length of the vehicle is around 2 mtrs or so,it may seem that the wheel base is too long.
I just got promoted to 2nd year,so dont have much experience about body dynamics as such.
I am planning to get a scooty's engine as it will be gearless and the weight of the chassis(vehicle) and the rider combined wont exceed 120-140kgs.

is this a college project or a hobby project?

why are you making it A three wheeler, and why two tyres for rear sticked together.?

              Hobby project actually.
              Why 2 tyres sticked together?
we are addicted to Phata$$ tyres

              why 3-wheelers?
No jhamela with wheel adjustment, you see!

+1, have the same doubt, i guess that thing will have lots of problems at cornering, rear should be wide and the front should be narrow in order to maintain high speeds while turning...

i also have a noob question... what exactly are you guys going to do with it, can it be registered and driven on the road?
are you planning to participate in a race or something or is it a college project?
It would be nice to build something like that if we were allowed to ride it on a go-cart track or on the highways

Can you explain how is this thing gonna face problem while cornering?

what we'll do with it? never thought of it.
its more of a hobby project rather than any competition project,if i see we can use it in any future competition then will surely put it into use.
                  About reg'ing it,I don't know about it.

you can ride it on go-kart track, also on highways(if you wanna commit suicide)

Im not good at explaining stuff but ill give it a shot.
See, track length(distance between two rear wheels or 2 front wheels) is left short in the front of the car because the weight of the car from the inside to the outside will be less, due to which you can maintain higher speeds without the worry of flipping/skidding.
The rider will feel more uneasy while exiting the corner.(when front track length is small)

But then again, the turning radius is lower when you have wider front track length, so it helps in races with not so wide race track...

I have read about these stuff a long time back somewhere on the net, i was curious why f1 cars have lesser distance b/n front tires than rear tyres...

There is possibility that what i said might be false(well im dont have perfect knowledge), so what i wanna suggest is do a little more research on it...
And make somebody sit and drive it,(since you dont have engine right now) while 1-2 people push it from behind, take it through some corners....ask the driver how he is feeling about it... it will help better...

have done push drive thing, will try it again tomorrow and will see how it performs

one thing i can tell u ...having a fat rear tyre is different thing, and having two tyres sticking together is entirely different. you will have a very difficult time steering it. either make it 4 wheeled or use a single rear tyre.

I would suggest that you get help of some seniors.
cause i see a lot of areas where improvements and modifications may be necessary.

Firstly i would suggest that you plan out the entire project and proceed step by step because a lot of things depend on someother thing, and considerations have to be made before proceeding.

Send me some more pictures with little better clarity.
I would love to go through them and maybe help in some ways.

I dont have much knowledge about body dynamics and stuffs, have searched the net a lot learned some stuffs, and thats what i have applied.

one more thing i noticed is --what is your plan to transfer power from engine to wheel.? coz right now, i dont' see any place for some things that might be neccessary.
