I would say get the 500D. Although, the 450D and the 500D are more or less same as far as features go, but the 500D is 15MP (if mega-pixels matter), better low ISO performance, new DIGIC processor, and it can also record movies! With an digital SLR, which has plethora of lenses available, shooting movie clips becomes fun!

The price of the 500D should be somewhere around Rs.40,000/- or thereabouts with the kit lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS f3.5-f5.6). By the way, are you planning to get a D-SLR?

The 500D has 15 mega-pixels; for a normal person that's the decisive factor (more often than not). But, what really matters to me is the high ISO performance and the inclusion of a new, better processor in the 500D, and ofcourse the HD movie shooting capability is also a plus point, although at 20fps, it will be jittery.

Also, there is another way to look at it. If you want, you can get the 450D (which is a very good camera in it's own respect), and get an additional lens for the money saved!

The 450D's price has gone southwards after the introduction of the 500D and the 550D! It now costs between Rs.30,000/- and Rs.35,000/- odd, with the kit lens. And for the kit lens, one does not need to pay extra money; the kit lens is a part of the whole "deal", unless ofcourse you are looking to get ONLY the camera body.

If you ask me, I have bought ALL my camera equipment (except the camera body) from gray market, and it has worked like a charm! I have saved quite a few bucks over bills, warranties and other such stuff.

I agree people do not quite trust gray market stuff, but for me, it's a pure heaven! The lenses, accessories, etc. that you see in my kit today are all bought from the gray market- either from Palika Bazaar (Connaught Place) or from Chandni Chowk (there are a couple of my known shops there. ). However, if you DO want to get a proper billed product, then the camera (the 450D is what I am talking as a reference here) would cost you about 3k - 5k odd more than what is available in the gray market. For the lenses, it gets even more expensive!

As an example, I use the Canon EF-100mm f2.8 USM macro lens for all my 1:1 macro work. I got it from Palika Bazaar about an year and a half back, for Rs.25,500/-, whereas the billed price at that time was close to Rs.40,000/-!! You can already begin to see how much I saved! Another lens, which I use typically for my portrait work - the Canon EF 50mm f1.8II, I got it from gray market (Chandni Chowk) for a paltry sum of Rs.3,500/- (YES, Rupees Three Thousand Five Hundred only! ), whereas in the "white market" (so to speak), it retails between Rs.5,500 and Rs.7,000/- odd!
                      :)

                      • I agree with aryan - for past ten years me & my friends too are using stuff from gray market without any issues.

hell twice they even replaced batteries for me twice for free after 2-3 months of purchase

gray market stuff is nothing but intact goods without the duties paid & that's why they are cheap.some sellers also give 1 year seller gaurantee.

Precisely. I do not see ANYTHING to worry about, so much so that I have almost completely forgotten that there exists a "parallel world" known as "with bills and warranties!!"
