Dint think I'd take your advice too seriously, now did you?
        Got the S9100.
Read the reviews. Negative stuff. But all pointed out to one thing, a hanging issue. Realised its cuz of the class 4 memory card so while buying decided to get a class 10. No problems yet. At Rs13,700 its the best deal one can get. Plus the matt black is really hot. *happy*

Good choice. Post some sample shoots soon and the black beauty.. it is a looker i was considering it for my purchase, very compact.
You could have told me, i could have got you a better deal as i said. but why the S9100? I thought you wanted manual controls.

Checked with photovatika+flipkart+some 10 other retailers and 14.5k was the best bet. Got it for 13.7. Wonder what better could you get me?
Its very easy to use. And its had to be more of a family camera. And good looking too. So got it. :P
Besides the hx9v was an expensive affair and s9100 won against tz25 on snapsort. So got it.

            • Picking up SX150 in few days; horrified to see how the digital camera market has turned like a fish market

One truth is that, there's no true replacement for Canon S5IS on that price range. The only thing I'm missing in SX150 from S5IS is the Swivel LCD. I really miss that.

I don't how pannasonic,sony,etc.. works after few years..

Got my canon A540 8 yrs ago, it was my family cam, also couple of years ago my wife started taking pics of my son. It is 6 MP. Still we get good pics and works perfectly freezing motion of my fast moving son.
                Canon rocks!

                • ^^^ Yuvi, 10+ years stories usually work; my S5IS bought 2007 Nov failed apparently for no reason, that too this is the second time; Made in Japan

There's no replacement for S5IS for the same features at that price

I pity that. But that's what market evolution has done over the decade, don't keep everything in one place, spread the features for more sales..

                      Didn't understand

S5IS was a perfect bridge between P&S and DSLR; now these are priced nothing less than 18K!!! And that too Nikon doesn't even have a M mode on the similar models of SX150.

Canon rocks in providing features & price; just that this SX150 doesn't have a swivel LCD which is a huge disappointment.

                      • My new addition...

Love its handling. So many external controls for quick change of settings. A tad slower though.

Its a great companion along with Panasonic LX3 and Canon SX2IS.

My Panasonic FZ28 which is now 3.5 years old still works as it did on day 1. It was a better buy than the Canon S10IS available back then IMO. The best bit about it was the 3 year warranty which meant 3 years of peace of mind(Though I never had to use the privileges of warranty since everything always worked). Still using stock battery and the camera still does over 450 shots on a single charge, I find that much more convenient than using AA / Rechargeable cells which were used on the Canon S5IS / S10IS. It costed me 22k back then, but then it was totally worth the money.

P.S.: It also has RAW and full manual mode and extension lenses support to extend its range 27-486mm range even more.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

                          • Guy can anyone explain which sensor is better for a P&S camera..lot of DSLR's have CMOS sensor, does that mean that P&S with CMOS is a better option?
I am in a process of buying a new camera, liked the Sony DSC-HX10V, is there any alternative to it, I found it to be little over my budget..

Sensor size matters and not the type. The bigger the sensor, more the quality of the picture. DSLRs with bigger sensor sizes will be able to produce pics wit more dynamic range, less noise, more detail, and better colors. You can see the sensor sizes of different camera categories in the following picture. The compact cameras have the smallest sensor size, 1/2.5".

There are bridge cameras with little bigger sensor size (1/1.7")than regular point and shoots. P7000/7100, Panasonic LX3/LX5, Powershot G11/G12, etc. These sensors are only 10 mp in size, but they produce better less-noise images than regular P&S cameras.

                              Advantages of larger sensors
                              • Higher maximum resolution with current state of the art sensor technology
                              • The ability to increase subject isolation with limited depth of field, using large-aperture lenses
                              • The ability to get lower noise with equal shutter speeds, at the cost of decreasing the depth of field
                              • Better noise performance at the base ISO value
                              • Lenses may be cheaper to produce, because of the lower resolution requirements (in lp/mm, assuming equal MP count)
                              • For DSLR focusing screens, easier manual focusing at equivalent depth of field

                              Advantages of smaller sensors
                              • Shorter telephoto lenses
                              • The ability to construct smaller lenses for smaller apertures (often in the f/4-5.6 range)
                              • Lower cost sensors

So I should be looking for the sensor size rather than the type
