  • @yank: I have no clue how can you compare a digital SLR with a digital camera! You just cannot compare a EOS 1000D with a P90. While the former is a D-SLR, the latter is a digital camera. Yes, the P90 does look like a digital SLR, but that is where the similarity ends.

If you want to get the P90, then you would get that huge 24x optical zoom lens to use, which I think would be the better choice for you because going by your post, it seems you want a camera for general purposes only. I would like to know why did you decide on the EOS 1000D when the cheapest D-SLR is from Nikon! However, please provide us with a little more detail regarding your requirements so that we would be able to help you better.
    :)

        Now, it's not OT!

As for the discontuniation of the D40, you can surely procure it from Chandni Chowk, if you want! There is always a way to get discontinued products too, you see!

            In literal sense, yes!

As for the price, the last I had enquired (quite sometime back), it was retailing there for about Rs.17k INR! Now, THAT's cheap for an SLR. But then again, do keep in mind that since there is no lens motor in the camera body, hence, non-AF-S lenses would need to be focussed manually! Simply put, autofocus just won't work with non AF-S lenses on the D40!

There is a reason for the cheap price, after all, you see.

            • As you are aware that even i intend to purchase my very first DSLR in very near future, and after doing my part of research i have concluded that Canon Eos 1000D will be the best bet for a novice/amatuer.first timer like me.

Yes, I am ofcourse aware of that Bandhav. And I would say the EOS 1000D is a good camera for the price one pays. If you can increase your budget a little, you can even think about getting the EOS 450D which is really the camera I wanted to get in the first place, but had to decide on the 400D because of obvious budget constraints.

Nevertheless, whenever you do plan to go shopping for your first D-SLR, would love to accompany you. If you HAVE decided on the EOS 1000D, then it's time I guess you decided the kind of lenses you would want eventually! The kit lens (18-55mm) would serve you quite good; I am still using it as it provides quite a lot of wide angle coverage (18mm), which I love but with time, you would need other lenses too!
                :)

For that kinda budget, as Aryan said go for a D40 from the grey market. If you're really lucky, you could also find a EOS 400D for around25k in the grey market.

Well if you need the bill and warranty, the cheapest DSLR is the Sony A200 with the 18-70kit lens. Its a pretty good buy for 27k. Nikon and Canon's entry level DSLRs which are the D60 and the EOS1000D are available for ~32k.

So, in the end you will have to extend your budget if you really wanna step into the DSLR world. Oh and don't expect '20x zoom' with the default (kit)
You would need another 10-12 (at least) to get a 70-300 or a 55-250 lens which when combined with the kit lens should give you that kind of range.
Not trying to put you off DSLRs or anything, jut making a point that getting into the DSLR world means investing some real cash.

                    • I am not an expert but with this kind of a budget a DSLR could be tough, you can opt for a prosumer camera (high end digital camera), and FYI warranty and grey market sits at different ends.

                        • @yank: As far as warranty of the gray market stuff is concerned, they would give you 15-20 day's warranty. It's more like 'word of mouth'. If anything goes wrong during this period, you would get an exchange for sure.

But, generally speaking 'gray market' stuff is just as good as the stuff from showroom. It's just because they are 'smuggled' or something, the tag 'gray market' is used! I have bought all my lenses from the gray market and it has worked flawlessly uptil now. No problems whatsoever.

As for the 'AF issue' of the D40 you are asking, it's not an "issue" per se. It's just that since the body (Nikon D40) doesn't have an motor, hence non AF-S lenses won't give you autofocus when attached to the D40. Simple enough.
                          :)

                          • Mr. Yank,

I bought my D80 in 2007 from Mumbai gray mkt. No problems at all till now. The local shops also repair if anything wrong happens to ur camera, of course by charging their money. Moreover u can get serviced ur cmera from company's authorised service centre at their cost. Don't know about Cannon but Nikon services gray mkt stuff, if u tell them warranty is expired.

You could also have a look at the Olympus E-420, it's the world's smallest and lightest DSLR and costs only 26k with the 14-42mm kit lens and has a 2 year warranty from Olympus India.
It's a really good and affordable choice if wide angle shots aren't something you'd want coz it has a 2X crop factor which means even the 14mm 'wide' end of the kit lens will act as a 28mm normal lens.
Other than that there's no dearth of features, like a 2.7" LCD, Live View, Nice autofocusing with Live View, weight just 380g without the battery! amongst others.
It might seem like I'm actually advertising for Olympus , but this is a real good entry level DSLR.

Here's a pic with the 25mm 'pancake' lens.
