  • Hi guys,

I need to help a friend in choosing a camera, the options he has shortlisted are:

    canon 450d
    nikon d3000
    nikon d5000

What would be the best option in terms of availability of lenses and cost vs features? I have only used bridge cameras so I'm not much aware of the DSLR cameras. He too owns a bridge camera and is interested in learning photography. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

      • canon Usa and canon India

        Hi guys,

As we know canon usa and canon india is different they sell same models with different names in India and USA. Is there any difference in quality also.
Bcoz I have used Canon IXUS 70 but it was not as good as its counterpart powershot series in USA, sorry i forgot the exact model name.

But there was a difference in terms of quality between two.

Now I am planning to buy a DSLR. I am not sure I should buy indian series or get it import from USA.

Go for Canon PowerShot SX10IS eyes closed. Damn good camera for the price. I've used it. My friend uses it for wildlife and bird photography.

Can't assure you of the availability in India though.

This is the link to the us website: PowerShot SX10 IS Digital Camera

Should cost you around 25k .

This cam will shoot some excellent macros which will drop your Jaw.
Its the best entry level DSLR

For landscape shots the kit lens (18-55mm) is best
for excellent macro shots you can go for SIGMA 70-300 MM APO or NON APO
                          DIGI macro lens
the APO will cost you arounf 10k the NON APO will cost you around 8K

so you are saying that for landscape shots the original 100d lens are enough and for best macro shots i should get the SIGMA 70-300

my next question is...the cam is like 26k and the macro lens are 8k...so for 35k,cant i get a dslr which can satisfy my requirements (macro and landscape) ??? i mean a better dslr than 1000d???

                            • @Satan: The camera body does not shoot macro photographs, the lenses do! So, getting the 1000D and hoping to get some "awesome macro shots" is really being naive.

Yes, the 1000D is a good camera, but then again the world of D-SLR just starts with acquring a D-SLR! The lenses is where your financial backbone will break, quite literally! When you buy a D-SLR, the lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-f5.6) comes bundled with the camera. There are different macro lenses available for the Canon stable of cameras. If you want a Canon macro lens, you can choose between the following:

                              1. Canon EF 100mm f2.8 USM Macro Lens, which is a BRILLIANT macro lens, and this is the one which I have and use regularly for my macro work. It costs about Rs.35k or therabouts.

                              2. Canon EF 100mm f2.8L USM Macro lens, which is the better and upgraded version of the same lens, but with the premium "L" tag attached and with Hybrid IS, which costs Rs.50k or so.

Yes, lenses are expensive, but no-one said, photography as a hobby is cheap! You can also get the Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro lens, which costs substantially less than the Canon macro lens. It costs about Rs.20k in the gray market.
                              :)

i am actually naive in this...i was just having a doubt whether the kit lens would come with the body..and as i was browsing i did see the contents of the 1000d

this is what i found about macro lenses:

Nikon, Canon and Sigma macro lens

If you're looking to purchase a macro lens for the first time, it's easy to get confused by the range that is available. For Canon Digital SLR camera's, there are 3 popular choices.
                                • Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens
                                • Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens
                                • SIGMA 50mm f2.8 EX Macro 1:1 Lens for Canon SLR digital camera's

For photographers who use Nikon SLR camera's, there is:
                                • Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens
                                • Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor Lens
                                • Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Nikon SLR Cameras

What is the main differences between a 50mm, 60mm, 100mm and 105mm macro lens?

                                • The lower the focal length of the lens, the lower the cost. For example, a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens is cheaper to buy than a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens. Similarly, a 60mm Nikon lens is cheaper than the 105mm Micro Nikkor lens.
                                • The lower the focal length of the lens, the smaller and lighter it will be to carry. For example, the Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor Lens weighs 27.9 ounces or 790 grams, whereas the Nikon 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor Lens weighs half that at only 15.5 ounces.
                                • However, the lower the focal length of the macro lens, the closer you also need to be to the subject you're photographing. This is an important consideration to take into account when it comes to macro photography. Personally I recommend spending that bit extra to purchase the Canon 100mm or the Nikon 105mm macro lens.

It's common to come across photographers who had purchased a 50 or 60mm and later wished they'd upgraded to a 100 or 105mm macro lens. Most complain that they need to be physically positioned too close to an insect to properly focus their 50/60mm macro lens. This can scare away the insect before they get a chance to take the shot. Another complaint, concerns the shadow that can be thrown over a subject when you need to be closer. Light is an important aspect in macro photography to enable you to keep a fast enough shutter speed to capture insects on the move.

To give you an idea of the difference in shooting distance between focal lengths, a 100mm macro lens used at approximately 45cm from the subject will have the same magnification as a 50mm lens used at only 23cm from the subject.

                                another query:

why is the sigma macro lens quoted by varun cheaper??
