Yes I tried fixing grub, using the 'grub-install' command at the terminal, it said 'no error reported.' Ok, here's the problem, Vista is installed on my Pata hdd and Ubuntu on my Sata hdd. When I boot my computer, it simply loaded Vista without even loading grub, so I changed the boot device priority in my Bios so that the sata hdd can boot first, Now, it loads Grub but it has no option for Vista. I also cant access my Pata drives from 'my computer' in ubuntu. Please help

Hey Prakash as you can see from below the lag is jumping from 100 ms to 1000 ms and then to 5000 ms, which is very very high...

And since all the 3 IPs are from your BSNL A-class i suggest you start bugging them with this trace out put, anyways most probably is this was a temporary issue and must have been resolved by now...

there is nothing to learn in Linux.you may learn automatically using terminal commands etc .also ,unlike M$-DOS CLI ,Linux bash shell can autocomplete commands etc.no worry.
there are books available for Linux.I will say ,stick with either debian or redhat(fedora).debian package management is the best(well ,pacman of archlinux is really the best ,but the distro needs n00b's to use lot of command line).

you may have to install nvidia or ati driver.compiz pwns vista's aero. also ,compiz-fusion is kind of lot of plugins etc and there are repositories for latest svn/git builds.

Ubuntu is the best choice for a newbie.
    follow this guide :
    Ubuntu:Hardy -
    similarly ,
    The Unofficial Fedora FAQ

and nice to know ,so many ppl are interested in Linux .

Ok. I get it. So i wont need to install compiz as it comes preloaded. I had used Linux sometime back (it was some SUSE version I got from a digit dvd), it was great but the only problem I had was that I wasn't able to install any new software! So, I hope I will have an easier time with ubuntu.

Any suggestions from where I can start learning more about Linux?

Been a linux fan for a long time, my first *nix install was Redhat 7.2
Right now i am typing here from Kubuntu (kde4 + ubuntu 8.04.1)
My advice would be not to use compiz or beryl, but try Kwin if you are using KDE (but i wouldnt know much about at as i mostly work on konsole )

its good to see you too buddy.
Beryl and Compiz are the best utilities that i've came across. well, transformation packs are for transforming the complete looks of the installed os, affecting the shell also.
Whereas, Beryl and Compiz are free utilities that can be installed with few Linux versions. I tried them on Fiesty Fawn(7.0)! With Beryl, you can make your desktop use some jaw dropping & beautiful 3D effects.
The Beryl Project brings 3D desktop visual effects that improve usability of the X Window System and provide increased productivity though plugins and themes contributed by the community giving a rich desktop experience. The latest package will install the compositing window manager, window decorator, theme customization tool and the management tool to launch beryl.

Ok, now good thing with Compiz...Ubuntu 8.04 comes with Compiz Fusion pre-installed and on supported hardware offers a wide array of Visual Effect . Now depending on graphic hardware of computer one could chose from three level of Visual Effect (From System -> Preferences -> Appearance )
The topmost level is advanced and recommended for PC with descent graphic hardware , enables effects like wobbly windows, transparency , animated workspace switching etc.

Plus, the installation is quite simple. Just let it finish dl then post some gr8 screenies.

I have used both ATI n nvidia n find both equal.
buddy...the whole 8series was a faulty card series.not the 88one.which NVIDIA never told.the 8600GT specific had huge heating issues.u can check the forums.and the case is with every single card manufactured.since they never changed their thermal material.they kept on making cards with the faulty grease material.its because HP and DELL never made a call back situation many think that its just once in a blue moon situation..but many notebook forums specific tell the real story.and the regular bios downloads on both dell and HP just show where the problem is.

probably when u took the dv5 you already had an updated bios which is programmed for fluctuating the fan speed.resulting in change in temp.so my advice to u will be download a temp checker and monitor your temps..even if u dont stress it..that may help you to prevent shutdowns.
