In case you are going for Vista 32 don't go for 4 GB of RAM.Vista wont be able to use all of it and you will lose about 642 MB.Instead you can go for 3GB in the following configuration.
    2 x 1 GB and 2 x 512 MB DIMMs.
    Here's an article explaining it:
Coding Horror: Dude, Where's My 4 Gigabytes of RAM?

Install it in the following way:
1.The RAM slots in your mobo will be having 4 slots in pair of two, each pair will be of different color.Let's say green and blue.
2.Put the 2 modules of 1gb in the green slots.
3.Put the 512 modules in the other two slots.

Tadaaa.....you now have three gb running in dual channel.
Of course you can go for Vista 64 if you plan to use 4 gb.The driver support is all right if your PC's components are of reputed brands.

^ what i meant was, 32 bit OS is 2^32 data processing ie 4GB memory. so thats the max it can use ideally. applied to vista, xp, linux... all.
but you can hack the shell for using 64bit processing using PAE kernel set.
so if you use 64bit OS then upgrading memory makes sense. you need 64bitOS.

The Ati 4850 is about 13.9k in Lucknow,so it will be a lot cheaper in Chennai,I think.Of course if you are ready to shell out more then the Ati 4870 is about 21.5k.In case you are not a hardcore gamer you can go for Ati HD3870 which is about 8k and gives a very good performance for its price. You can wait for other members to suggest a competetive nvidia card but I myself vouch for Ati since I had a very bad experience with my two previous graphic cards(both nvidia). In my humble opinion,Ati cards can take a hell of lot of punishment than Nvidia.
Dont go for Palit branded Ati card. They have overheating issues.Go for Sapphire or Asus or Powercolor.

As for the OS I suggest you go for Vista Ultimate 32 bit. It's easy, fun, looks good and with the Service Pack 1 it's almost as fast as XP.
Go for 2X2 GB module of Ram from a reputed brand:Kingston/Crucial/Patriot.

Whew........it's quite hard trying to put these technical terms in simple language.

3.Check how many ram slots your mobo has.If it has 4 than a 2gb X 2 modules of DDR2 800mhz RAM running in dual channel will be sufficient.I must point out here that to take advantage of the full 4 GB you need a 64 bit OS. You can go for Vista64 but that's a bit of a shady area in terms of support and right now very few applications take advantage of 64 bit.

4.Ati HD4850 offers good performance at a decent price. The HD4870 is even better.Go for any of them acc. to your budget. I recommend buying the Sapphire or Powercolor branded Ati card. Dont go for Palit.
1,2&3. The motherboard supports DDR2 at a max freq of 800mhz. Its Got 4 ram slots.

    4. How much is the 4850 and 4870 ? whats the difference between the two? being less tech savvy than you guys I dont understand most of the jargon.

guess you are not familiar with linux so i suggest 64bit OS + 8GB memory + vmplayer with RHFC9 or ubuntu !?
I am not familiar with linux but i have used ubuntu for sometime. My basic concern was that there is no point of getting 4gb ram if my system cant make use of it. Just like my Laptop that has 4gb ram yet the system only shows 3.5gb out which I can use only 2.5gb at any time. Its a Centrino2 running on Vista32.

    any help ?

I have system with the following config - Amd Athlon X2 64bit - 2.31Ghz with 1gb ram running on WinXP Pro (SP3).

I need to upgarde my RAM 4Gb - Crucial.com says I cam upgrade upto 8gb. I am wondering whether all of that 4gb is gonna be used my OS in the first place. I was told that an os by the name fedora9 does make use of it. Please advise.

What type of RAM should I go for consider I am planning to buy a decent graphics card in 2 months? Can somebody help with the different types of ram and their speeds etc?

Coming to the Graphics card- Please suggest a Good 512mb Graphics card that could play the latest games at a fair clip....

Thanks a ton guys ...in advance
