oye..! had you installed gstreamer plugins?
    refer Ubuntu:Hardy - .
there are many players .I use exaile(amarok) ,rhythmbox .also for winamp2.x clone ,use beep media player or audacious.

    for torrent use deluge client.

no.not a simple matter of double click.you have to resolve lot of dependencies.

I think ,since you lack a fast internet connection -either use apt4cd .
else ,get and install ubuntu ultimate edition which comes will all plugins etc etc.

for mobile phone net connection reach ubuntuforums.org

Just a couple of final questions
    1. Whats the exact name of the application which i need to play multimedia files like mp3, avi, etc.?
    2. Even after trying the whole weekend, i couldn't make ubuntu detect my phone as a modem. So i will be doing offline installs. Suppose i get hold of the .deb packages along with their dependencies, is it just a simple matter of double clicking on the .deb files and installing them?
I need to do all this so that I can install vlc, compiz configuration manager, etc.

Bingo! Its recognizing PATA now. I enabled enhanced mode for both PATA and SATA drives. Love you dude
And no yaar, no other options for net, only GPRS.
One question , the wiki link you gave me before, they use 'apt - get' to install softwares like vlc, multimedia codecs, etc. Do I need a net connection to use those commands? I have also not enabled compiz yet, does it require net connection to be installed...?

ok. After we have sorted this out, i will try and connect to the internet using ubuntu. I use a GPRS connection via bluetooth on my mobile. I have read up some tuts on the net, i have found some nice tuts for connecting via usb cable, but unfortunately i wasn't able to find anything decent for connecting via bluetooth. Lets see, i will update you guys whether i was successful or not.

Ok. My mobo is an Asus P5GZ-MX (bought it last year). Yes i remember i have seen the 'extended mode option in the bios. I will enable it. And i will also 'ispci | grep ide' and post the result here. Right now i am on my lappy and dont have access to the desktop, so i will post it by evening....

Another thing is that my Hard disks are set as 'primary master' and 'secondary master'. Can this also be one of the reason? Should i set one of them to primary slave.

I guess you have to check your bios.there is some ide "extended mode or enhanced mode" available.enable that. check through your bios options properly.
also ,what is your mobo ?is it a *VERY* new model?sometime ide controller may not be supported with stock kernel.for eg: jmicron one.

also post here the output of "lspci |grep IDE" here.

I have already installed ubuntu on my sata drive. Vista is in the pata drive, the problem is that ubuntu isn't detecting the pata drive. Here's what i get after
    sudo fdisk -l
    Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
    Disk identifier: 0xf2f3f2f3

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 * 1 4864 39070048+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda2 4865 9728 39070080 f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
    /dev/sda5 6777 9728 23711908+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda6 4865 5046 1461852 82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda7 5047 6079 8297541 83 Linux
    /dev/sda8 6080 6776 5598621 83 Linux

Partition table entries are not in disk order
Since grub also doesn't show vista in the boot menu, i have to change the boot disk priority in the bios everytime i want to boot into vista.
