ATI cards have always have had driver problems, which I simply am unable to understand. I have always used the GeForce series cards, and I wouldn't want to shift, really..

As for the 'hint', well, you never really know - it could just be!

^^Dont the 9-series from nvidia suffer from overheating problems ? Or was that issue restricted only to the 8-series ? And as Anvancy said, why not the ATi ? Else atleast the 260 or 280's ?

@Aryan : They have had...but I think the scenario is changing as of now. I have a 4850 and found the driver to be quite stable. It O/C's as hell as well..

I would LOVE to get my hands on an GeForce 260/280, but I don't think that would retail for anything less than 35,000 bucks (Rashi Peripherals). If anyone could confirm the prices of these two behemoths from NVIDA (260/280), that would simply be great.

Also, have you seen the size of the 260/280!!?? These cards are MONSTERS..I doubt it would fit comfortably inside my PC cabinet, on the motherboard. Heck, I doubt it would fit there at all!

the 8 series the 9 series "ARE" still suffering from heat issues.you see,our hardware providers sometimes do give us actually OLD cards(check import date).which may have those cheapo grease stuff that created heat issues.

the 200 series to me right now seems just a showoff putting money.

ATI cards now specially the 4 series are making a nice competition for NVIDIA.

even when the nvidia heat issue was picked up in notebooks to save the line TOSHIBA was first to shift to ATI from nvidia.and after that HP followed.

@Anvancy : Dude, I have a doubt. My friend bought the XFX 8600GT card 6 months back. It broke down with overheating problems. His dad uses the PC. He is a graphics professional and taxes the PC to the limit. We gave it to Rashi peripherals at Chennai and they just replaced the card with a refurbished one. Even this broke down a week back. Now what can he do. Poor guy spent a whopping 11K and is now forced to run his PC with integrated graphics.

you see NVIDIA has still not heartily addressed the issue.so still you find BIOS updates for it which fluctuates the fan speed.they say the card goes kaput when you stress it.my point is that i spent that X amount of bucks to stress that card na so that my applications can run smooth.the card is not taking that stress so why buy.and if NVIDIA itself has not fully solved the issue,even Rashi cant do much.and u must be clearly knowing that our hardware providers be it electronics computer stuff etc they provide us cheapo stuff and earn a lot by a huge margin.

my friend also took an XFX card and he insisted a TOTAL replacement.not refurbished.and he got that.so its better if u get a total new card.

Did he contact any higher management ? Cos in Chennai there are just a bunch of illeterate lazy-ass fools who do not even know how to handle electronics sitting at the counter. When u give the card, all they do is stick a post-it note on throw it for a good 2 feet distance onto a cushion in a back-room. Its got all items that have come with problems, Motherboards, Graphics cards, SMPS et al. Now u shud understand how they would address al problems. So if u cud just PM me what ur friend did and whom he contacted, it would be much helpful.

fortunately we have good people in our comp shops.they helped him in making a direct replacement.
my simple advise to you is to mail rashi a sort of serious or may be harsh mail stating that i wasted or gambled x amount of money on your card.write stuff that will affect it.you will see results.

Ok, there are two 8600GT models from XFX. One is UDF3 and other is UDF7! The UDF7 model had serious heating issues. Users in many forums had complaints over forums. After several months, UDF7 model was optimized with automatic fan serialization and better memory timings. However, even with that, the problem persisted. Ok, now here is the exception. I own UDF7 8600GT model. And even faced the same heating problems.
e.g. playing Crysis@1024x768 with eye candies or COD4@1280x1024 with AA@4x, made GPU temps go 90-95 degrees!!! Poor GPU! You could even make tea at those temps!! hehe..
Ok, here is what i did to mine. Applied AS5 Silver and installed a 80mm high speed fan in front of it. Its been over months since my card crossed 85 degrees now. Not to mention that the card is overclocked insane....725/925!! Yup, even with highest possible settings, the card never crosses 85 degrees. Plus, that is pretty normal for a UDF7 model.
Ok, about the problem, i say send that card to RMA, if it is creating that much problems.
Btw, could you be a little more specific about the problem? I mean, is it artifacting too much with applications? Any color alterations, image distortions during multimedia playback?? If it is, then RMA it. Else, do what i did. I am sure that'll help.

Ok, one exciting thing, i did this DiwaLi. I purchased LG Jazz 42" TFT! Check out the pics..

Congrats on the 42-incher Gold heart. Well the problem with the graphics card is that there is no artifacting etc whatsoever. My friend never plays games. His Dad works extensively on Maya and 3DSMax. The card just refuses to run after a few weeks. If the monitor is connected thru the card, there is no display output at all. This happened with the original card as well as the replacement given. The card is an UDF7.

Will the game that is being played show some kind of texture artifacts, and perhaps even hang/ crash after a while? Is that a sign that the graphics card is overheating?

I wonder, because at present I am using a GeForce 7900GTX, and while playing Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway or GRiD, it's happening quite often, which is really quite frustrating, although, while playing SPORE it runs absolutely fine. Strategy games seem to run absolutely fine (without any texture problems/ crashing, etc.) I am dazzled...

Yup! Thats a sign. I once overclocked my old 6600GT to insane limits and it reached around 85 degrees and started showing artifacts while playing games. Showing artifacts is also a sign of corrupted memory modules IIRC. Anvancy should be able to help out more...

according to my knowledge the main indication along with temperature rise is flickering game play,drop in FPS even in perfect conditions and unnecessary lag or crashes.jittery videos etc show that the card is on the kaput side.

In my case, games (mostly FPS, and GRiD) run fine for about 5-7 minutes, before various texture artifacts start to show up and in no time, the game either hangs (and I need to do hard reboot) or it just crashes to the desktop, although the former (hang/crash) is a more "regular" thingy.

Now, I don't know whether it is the graphics card or the RAM modules..Bloody hell, the strategy games (Warcraft, AOE-III, SPORE) work like a charm but when it comes to graphics/ PC intensive games, the PC just seems to gives up! Heck!

thing is my dad is allergic to LG

you can easily convert the avis to HD.or take a philips DVD player hook HDMI and upconvert to 1080p.


@aryan:strategy games do not have intensive textures.mostly they are repetitive.so the textures are already stored in the cache and your game runs smoothly.comparatively in FPS there are a lot of intensive textures.
just run 3d mark 06 with your card.compare your score with the standard test results.and you can find out if your card is running old.

or just go out there and buy an ATI 4 series.
