I live in Bangalore, own a Yamaha FZ16 and i'm pretty keen on bettering my cornering skills right now because we all know the rush is in the twisties. Unfortunately the roads are quite unsafe during daytime to practice on and there is no public track nearby. So i've recently started riding at 5:00 am.
I've observed that it's very hard to get my knee down on the ground when i'm cornering. I stick my knee outwards (perpendicular to the tank), lift my butt off the seat and hang on while leaning in, but it seems the bike leans very little and my knee doesn't touch the ground. Other times (and mostly) i lean in greatly, but can't adjust my weight at all such that my foot-pegs scrape the ground loudly and the rear wheel threatens to lose traction.
Once i even had a low side: entered the curve at 60kmhr, leaned in loads to compensate for the under-steer and heard the foot-pegs screech loudly before being heaved off the road violently. So one could easily say i corner badly. Of course i don't counter-steer; it just seems too hard and risky for me...
Also, while concluding, i'll explain that i don't ride duck-footed; the balls of my feet are always on the foot-pegs. I only bring them down to rear-wheel brake and to shift gears. So all in all, i seem to be very lost in trying to corner well.
Any suggestions? tips? anecdotes? tutorials? I'd be extremely grateful!
Cheers.
