Adventure Toruring Bikes comes under dual-sport and touring bikes

    Picture:Yamaha Super Tenere 1200

They are designed primarily for riders who want to travel long distances on pavement with occasional forays onto dirt roads. They usually come with smoother tires that perform better on pavement.

    Picture:Kawasaki Versys 1000

The adventure touring motorcycle concept encompasses dual-sport motorcycles designed specifically to provide long range touring capabilities both on roads and off roads with the intent of making virtually any destination reachable. Motorcycles in this category share a unique combination of traits that provide them very high ground clearance (for off-road purposes), large fuel reserves, large displacement, under stressed engines for high reliability and heavy torque output but good high-speed highway behavior and handling. These combinations, along with their weight and large size, separates them from traditional off-road, enduro, and motocross motorcycles.

    Picture:Suzuki V-Strom DL 1000

It is common for a large selection of purpose-driven options to be available for global tourers, including skid plates (to protect the engine and transmission during off-road use), larger and additional fuel tanks than stock, metal-formed hard luggage for extreme condition use, hardened GPS navigation systems designed to handle off-road abuse, etc. These bikes do not necessarily ship with hard luggage, but usually offer them as optional extras either from the manufacturer or via third-party suppliers. These motorcycles are often used as the basis for competitions in extreme rally events

Don't Confuse this with Sports Touring or Cruisers category.

    Picture: Honda NC700X

I made a comparison chart about some of these bikes out there

So now I know where my ZMA really fits in.

If want to update my ZMA it will be Yamaha Terene 250 but its only available only in Brazil.

So sharing my taught of discussion
    • Is there a market for these bikes in India?
    • Will you buy any of these?[Only few of these are available.]
    • Would you Like these in profile like CBR 250R[ ie 250cc| Liquid cooled|6Speed]
    • 20 Liter Fuel Tank is required for a country like India
    • And the ground clearance suits any roads in India[Literally]
    • The Riding comfort is better than track bikes[Eg. R15 2.0]
    • The Pillion is also comfortable.

Personally I think this type of bike is what we need for touring in India. I hope the Manufacturers also realize this and start making one/more of these right here in India.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Hey did you hear me thinking!
I am also looking for something like this but......
Heard that BMW will be launching its 650 n 800 cc bikes soon, am waiting for that and also Tiger 800 from Triumph, though Tiger is priced higher compared to other Triumphs as it will be brought in as CBU n not CKD form.
But lets see. In fact this class is just not present in India as of today, we either have race oriented bikes or road or daily commuting oriented bikes.(Less Hero Motors Impulse, but then its too mild n not exactly a good choice as a long distance tourer, never the less it has kick started the category in India.)

I think rather to ZMA, Impulse fits more in this category, I know its not a hard core touring bike but for sure it is a good off road bike for Indian roads and at least hero has thought to built something in this category and we can expect something more from other in this category though I think Impulse does get that much successful product for hero moto corp.

I think only ZMA is present only in this category in India. Well it has plastics that are a bit fragile but minor offroading can be done with it. With some tweaks it can do some serious off roading too . Undercowl and front fairing should be removed. 15 litre tank. Linear power and torque delivery yes ZMA it is. Pulsars too can fit in but seating position matters for it. Well CBR 250 is there too but fails on offroading.

But the thing is ZMA lacks power ( 17 ps )

I wish for a bike with power range between 25- 35 bhp with same torque delivery like ZMA and with better solid body parts. Semi- faired and with a top end of 150- 160 kmph. Priced between 1.3 to 1.7 lakhs. I think that is pretty doable for Indian manufacturers.

These type of bikes are awesome. They fit the needs of people who buy big bikes for touring and not just some showoff CCD rides. I would say a Suzuki VStorm can take the market by storm if it is completely made here. But that can never happen as our market is not so big for them to invest so much and set up a factory.

from the pics i saw on google of 250cc tenere, I have doubts about high speed stability. High clearance means lower stability at high speeds. It should be planted like ZMA ( or better than that ) at high speeds.

it is not only your wish but every touring xbhpian's wish. but sadly indian market does not seem to have potential for these type of bikes, that may be the reason, manufacturers are not making it.

As Prince said, its every xBHPian's dream. There is nothing wrong in asking. We are Indians and our market is big. This is our requirement. We do not need to comply with the rest of the globe's requirement. We want what we want. If some company thinks they can tap our market, they should provide us this!

For a second I thought its a manufacturer trying to take feedback from us to guage response *cough*

                              So here are my responses

Is there a market for these bikes in India? - A small but a definite market exists for this

Will you buy any of these? - Anything under 400CC, and priced appropriately, I would definitely take the plunge!

Would you Like these in profile like CBR 250R - Liquid Cool will help, but do protect the radiator in such a case!

20 Liter Fuel Tank is required for a country like India - YESSSS! 18 will do, 20 would be marvelous. A range of 400KMs in a tankfull is what we aspire for

And the ground clearance suits any roads in India[Literally] - DEFINITELY needed! Add a bash plate in there in optional accesories

The Riding comfort is better than track bikes[Eg. R15 2.0] - DUH Yes!

The Pillion is also comfortable - Yes! A back rest/luggage carrier would help too!

Should have a BIG alternator to charge up other gadgets via a ciggy adaptor!

Should have a lot of optional accesories (Headlight protector, touring racks, Fog lamps!)
Super CommuTOURer - Talk less, Ride more
