  • Preliminary Motorcycle servicing guide.

We , the riders ,when we go for very long distance trip in interior places, that time we really need to service our bike to make in good condition.
So I need to know what are preliminary steps or work should be done with our bikes..
If I go for a trip which is more than 6000 to 10,000kms ,and if to very interior place ,where ASC is out of reach.
That time what we need to do except
    1.changing Engine oil,
    2.changing *oil filter ,
    3. cleaning air filter
    4.cleaning /changing spark plug
    5. chain lube..

Even I feel the chain is loose after a couple of thousand kms, then what I need to do??
    tighten the chain??
What will happen if the chain is very loose??

mainly if Someone want to do servicing of his bike himself, what to do??

Even some rides like to take care of their bike by own..
Please riders , give your valuable updates here...

    some questions

1.When it is needed to De-carbonising your motorcycle ??

2.What are the tools and things to be taken with luggage when we go for real loonng *rides??(I think tool box kits is not enough for solving problems.)

3.Is it possible to fit some fog light on motorcycle without creating any prob to main headlight??
(sp for smaller bikes also, like -my bike has 5ah battery[bajaj platina])

    ***
    4. How to be sure that service center guys have done the proper service or just solved the noted problem and WASH ?? * (great problem for me sometime).

Hope riders will give valuable inputs..

The most useful info about bike (& the tools needed) is there on the service manual. A must have if you're a DIY type.
*If chain's too loose, which can't be adjusted via adjuster then temporary fix is remove 1-2 links from the chain.
    * de-carbonizing on a rich tuned, carb'ed can be done after 25-30k (if one dont have any issues then it can be ignored)
    * extra lights are possible to use but confirm that they ain't causing the battery to run out of juice, if its causing then, re-wind stator coil and use ape R/R for better charging.
    * one may also need to adjust valve clearance.
    * changing fork oils, brake oil bleeding may be needed.
    * keep frequently used spares like, carb's O-rings, diaphragm, spring, AFR screw etc. Control cables, needed fluids, oil seals, gaskets, some grease, extra fuses, tyre repair kits, air pump (electronic or foot pump), extra bulbs, etc.
** in short, one may need to perform everything which is under 'maintenance' section in owner's manual.
    P.S.
    * The most important things on long rides are not to operate bike over its 70-75%
    * carb tuning should be rich to prevent overheating
    * rest after every 1-2 hours for 10-15 mins (at least), helps rider stay fresh and helps air cooled engine shed some excess heat.
    .

          1. DO NOT go out when you feel the bike is not in a good condition
          2. DO NOT go to places where you feel you're far away from ASC
          3. Even a motorcycle like CBR 250R or Ninja 250R that has longest service interval of 6000 Km needs some attention for carrying out this kind of long trip like tightening & lubing chain; I'm not sure which motorcycle you're talking about here
          4. If you have a motorcycle that has shorter service interval, then you need to plan well in order to reach ASC for regular checkups to carry out servicing

BTW, motorcycling is way too harder than driving out a car & very very few people understand that; most people think we ride motorcycle to save fuel, atleast in this country, but the reality is we ride because we love them. So planning is a very big deal right from route, reach-ability of ASC & regular servicing + a big bonus if we know to fix few stuffs by ourselves & most importantly having a motorcycle with longer service duration.

Very true 'Aargee'. We ride them because we love them and not for saving fuels. But again, like 'Aargee' said we have to plan in advance for Check ups before we go for a Long trip. I guess precautions are better.

Depends on what motorcycle you're talking about; a regular 4S engines have something like 30-40K or may be 50K interval, forget alone FI engines.

Carrying tool box??? What're you going to start a mobile ASC or what? Carry basic things like long & short nose pliers, 10/11/12/13/14 mm wrench, philip & star head screw driver, insulation/duct tape, puncture kit (incl tools), mini foot pump, bungee chord, rope.

Before starting any long ride, make atleast 200 Km ride inside the city or one Sunday morning ride where you can get to know niggling issues. Just don't take the bike right out of ASC to highway

I use HH ZMR, bajaj platina 125,while both I am using in very longrides..
Because of that I want to know the full servicing of my bike "chhota mech", I know some things only..

Agree with you - motorcycling is tougher than driving ..
                Thats why I am a motorcyclist ...

I maintain this rule , but could not understand that they have done the "valve tappet clear" or not , cleared the fuel pipe or not,
Cleared the silencer drain or not, as it is recommended in service book..

that's why many emphasis on getting their bike serviced in front. One will know what's done & what's not. And one can also learn few things from mechanic, guide/help him, etc.
And also most mechanics dont perform the task (for individual service) mentioned in owner's manual unless told/forced to.

                    +1 to that..

I am also thinking about local service guy,but as I stay very long distance from my home, don't even know the local language ..Its very critical..

Really don't know the work done by bajaj ASC..
