First off, glad to know that you've considered to even talk about your problem, which in and of itself is the first step in improving yourself as a better rider.

Speeding per se is not a bad idea, but the gumption to do it when and where is what really matters.

      Here's my little suggestions.

Next time you get the urge to accelerate or speed up in unwarranted situations, just think for a second.

      1. Where are you? In signal, traffic or peak traffic hours

      2. Why? What am I gonna get speeding here (consider point one) fuel waste, unnecessary strain on engine, wear and tear, plus high chances of you bumping into someone or something and again unwarranted injuries both to the ride and rider. (the former pains even more )

      3. Okay, I got it, so when can I? You have a dual carriage way or one way lane with excellent roads, yes that's when you can, at the same time being constantly aware of your situation because accelerating and speeding just for the sake of it isn't the proper way, "be aware of your situation", you never know when a dog from the bush near the curb or what can show up from nowhere, always ride at speeds you're comfortable and the speed with which you know you can control the bike.

      4. Duh! Well, remember your loved ones are always there waiting for you at home. Keep them in mind!

      Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
      The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

      THE END

I always ride in peak traffic hours where are no traffics lights and no cops , not even a single cop or traffic light .. People always speed there .. I speed there too but i want to stop my addiction ..

I feel uncomfortable at slow speeds .. I always travel at speed 60-80 .. But i dont want to do that .. I tried riding slowly once and my head started to ache lol ..

Re: How to stop my speeding addiction

While you are out on the road, overtaking and speeding @ 80+ kmph takes a lot of calculations and thinking. And the entire calculation and thinking has to be 100% correct. No room for even a 0.01% error. And while executing the calculations, you need to be on full alert with each and every nerve of yours being tested to the limit. Quite a tedious job!
Isn't is easier to just remember the faces in a flash you are supposed to see when you go back home? Just a second of thought and trust me you won't ride rash. 50 years of good time with family and friends(and obviously some part of it with your bike) is obviously more valuable than 50 seconds of adrenalin rush.
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

These are real words of wisdom, sir.

One more reason that I have for not riding rash.

I'm am just 23, fresh out of college software engineer, and I am very very ambitious. When I drive rash, I say to myself - "I have to live a long and healthy life to achieve all my dreams, if I crash my R15 now, break half the bones of my body and spend rest of my life on wheel chair, I wont be able to buy and ride my R1, 5 years later." Besides broken bones and hospital bed is not my idea of fun. This thought reduces my speed considerably.

Try it, think of something that you love and cant live without (family, loved ones) and you'll automatically release the throttle.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

Re: How to control yourself from riding rash?

Hi, I have not posted for a while but I hope, I still could share my thoughts here. Maybe, we must be aware that road biking is sometimes dangerous. But, we can control it by thinking of our own safety while on the road itself. I guess, one point here is to know how to discipline ourselves to prevent accidents. Extra caution and safe speed is very important

Re: How to control yourself from riding rash?

Rules only ease management and increase predictability. It's easy to imagine overtaking in multi-lane city traffic while a herd of cattle/sheep crossing highway often induce spikes-of-irritation during riding.

Simply, speeding urges will subside as time goes by, like the adolescent/teenage years. For some this period may last only couple of years, some cases with sudden bursts here and there. In some extreme cases fatal events.

Hence the expression, "know what you're doing", frankly I don't know what I'm doing and it's not as easy as it may sound.

PS: And some would say, there are far bigger problems out there which need attention.

Re: How to control yourself from riding rash?

I rode at 80kmph when I was under 19 and in the same road am managing 40 to 60 at max today at 21 .

Even today am the fastest in my route I simply ride 5 to 10 kmph faster than others in my road and as I know where the bumps are ,where people cross the road I calculate it and ride according to it.am still happy plus safe today (was able to stop the bike in extreme cases more effectively).

Do have courtesy to pedestrians, cyclist and fellow bikers .

Only issue am facing is I get angry and tend to fight with guys who bully me/ other road users usually its four wheeled vehicles trying to keep up with scooters in city traffic .Hope I start ignoring them .

And for mad rush do try riding before 6 AM .Empty roads and zero pedestrians you can gun your bike to its glory (within limits ).

I too had this mad rage in me everytime I start the bike and me on the saddle. Urge for me to red line it wherever I was. Once an aged guy told me " Arey bhai what are you going to do speeding like this at 90 kph, By the time you put your bike on the stand, I ll be right behind you. That 10 sec is not going to change anything on road. Why don't you leave early from home if you want to avoid such this".

I ignored his wisdom words and it proved costly for me once, I was again speeding , that too in peak traffic , weaving like a mad man and causing havoc all around and THUD..i heard a sound, It was me lying on the road when I hit a bus from the side while trying to avoid another biker on the road. The bike was right over my legs and started to burn. I had to push it away fast.

I then realized what **** mistake I have been doing. Since then I never cross 60kph barrier what ever it is and maintain my lane discipline as much as possible. Always let ppl go if they are in a hurry. And I used to think the same what the aged person thought about me once.

Just think for a split second even before wringing your throttle wide open. You have a lovable life to lead with your loved ones.

                        Happy riding and be safe.

Indeed, one of a best thought. Almost everyone met accident at some point of their life, but i don't want everybody to blame me for that. So, i ride on average speed depending on the area, also you will not get any reward for riding at 90 or 100kmph. Once when i was riding 95+ on a straight stretch and suddenly a thought hit me "what will happen to me if i had a fall at this speed" and next second... i left throttle.
People often says that its age factor and adrenalin rush that make us urge to feel speed thrill. But if you have a cool and better mind, you will surely go slow (not too slow).
Whenever you start bike, just think your life is not your's alone, there are other people also to whom you are special.... you can feel your bike deeply while riding it slow and feeling the ride rather than abusing it.....
Only a bike rider knows why Dog sticks out his face out of car's window...

Every time I sit on the saddle, I just remember the tag line of the CEAT ad.
'The street is full of idiots '. A beautiful tag line to remember since we were one at some point in time

It need not be me who makes the mistake but others too can make the mistake.

If am on high speed I won't be able to avoid others' mistakes and react to it.

With this thought when I start on my saddle - I end up thumping my way to my destination with a smile on my face.

Remember there is always the track to check speed limits.

Very good to see that some of the younger members of xBhp is aware of safe riding. If you know and practice safe riding at 20-22, I think it will count when you are supposed to be 70-72!
