• How to control yourself from riding rash?

From the past few months I am riding very fast on city roads and can be easily termed rash.

I have tried many times to stop riding at dangerous speeds inside city limits but somehow I am just unable to.

My family had tried many times to stop me from riding fast but I start riding fast after 1 or 2 days.

My question is how you all stop yourself from riding fast and dangerous?

Initially I was telling myself that I ride fast but responsibly and care for others on the road. It has now become a habit and I am realising that riding on 80 km/hr or above is dangerous and cant be justified by the responsible vs irresponsible argument.

Please share your ways of staying calm and within the scope of being called a responsible rider.

A very interesting point indeed.

Well 'The Monk' method is - Meditation and High Intensity Physical Exercise.

Very different from the 'Old Monk' method of course

Re: How to control yourself from riding rash?

Everytime I get on the saddle, city or highway I make it a point to first settle down, clear my mind of all current running thoughts and starts a fresh chain of thoughts. This seems to work just perfect for me. Often I have noticed that when you start riding with already running thoughts, u forget what you actually are doing with that motor between your legs and you tend to propagate your prior thoughts onto your riding.

Taking a time out is one thing that works in almost every situation, in a situation like yours it could be a few seconds while in some others days. But time always helps

On a funny note, unlike The Monk, I come from a different school of martial arts where we don't believe in workouts, high intensity or low, I was trained to focus on happy things in life to stay calm, food being one of them

Leave early. Ride at a swift but safe speed. This wont help to make your riding slower but will surely make it safer as you will have peace of mind with no rush to reach somewhere.

P.S : I don't think it is possible to make you a slower rider now. Work on being safer instead.

Well riding rash and abusing (words only) riders who break the law was my way of riding before. Now my happy place in my life is riding. It is just the way you feel and bond with your bike. Now-a-days my wife complaints (when accompanying me) that I am riding my bike way too slow 50-70 kms/h in the city. I just say to her enjoy the ride and don’t be tensed for nothing. I always start early wherever I go. Hence I am always in a relaxed mood and enjoying every bit of the miles munched.

I think your problem (Purely my opinion) is you carry along a lot of matters in you mind. This always happens to everybody in their life at some point. Just for example when you’re going for work forget about your family problems and concentrate and enjoy the work you do. Similar when you’re at home leave out all the thoughts about work problems and enjoy with your family. This applies to all problems and situation. Try to concentrate and enjoy the work at hand rather than think of solutions to many never ending problems.

Cheers

Initially I had this same problem of riding rashly in the traffic (that was way back when I used to own P135), be it early/late to work or wherever I want to go to. It had become a habit to me unless I noticed some deadly accidents infront of me. Trust me, since that day, I never increased my steed speed past 60 inside the city. That is one way to look at it and control your speed. There might be another technique you can try which has helped me as well. Whenever you are on the road, consider that everyone else apart from you are a bunch of nutcases and that anything can happen because of someone else's fault .

Hope this helps! Ride safe!

muztariq what bike do you ride? i think you can adjust the throttle cable in such a way, the carb slide should open half only. so even if you are tempted to open the throttle it won't open fully. your speed will be automatically restricted.

Re: How to control yourself from riding rash?

Definitely a problem with many of us and an interesting discussion point!

I find that riding in the city is possible only in the extremes, trying to cruise at a safe speed of 50 on reasonably good quality road with moderate traffic is close to impossible. So I either ride like a maniac (as it seems to other, not me) or else I ride like an uncle - 5th gear 40 kmph.

The easiest way I have found to control my self is to challenge myself towards getting a higher MILEAGE. The moment mileage comes to my mind I start riding like a ZEN UNCLE... Minimal braking, minimal acceleration, top speed 40 kmph... With mileage on my mind my attitude changes to - "Haan bhai, ye le side diya tere ko, jaa aage nikal le, tu bhi kya yaad rakhegaa..!!!", I let the world pass by while I peacefully putter ahead at 40...! Aaahhh the blissss...!!! X-)

I always think that I am responsible for myself but I have no right to affect the life of others.

Hence if I am riding at 100 in my lane while zig zagging a bit (happens very rare) I am fine with it but when the moment comes where my riding stance will have any probability of influencing the fellow commuter's riding pattern I check myself.

Stop keeping cash in your pocket,as a result you will have to worry for mileage and you will ride in economy mode.
PS:80kmph in city is too much, follow what Themonk and fellow bikers said.

I don't buy this;
1. Accidents can happen even at slow speeds; only learned instinct & experience comes to aid.
2. I've met with an accident, an overconfident dog & overconfident me involved, I ended up skidding Access125 at a sandy corner. I've been careful to not to hurt anyone else but me in accidents I caused. However, I don't know what happened to that dog. While people gathered to aid me, I could only hear squealing sound becoming distant. Only later after several hours I noticed swollen left wrist. Minor fracture in left wrist and multiple bruises on right hand and legs. No riding for a month.
3. Skidded on a ragi harvest, which is common to find on roads near Indian villages(newfound husking technique from farmers) during harvest season. Nothing happened except little bend in bike's handle.
4. Once in process of hard breaking bike started skidding when I took from tarmac to soil/mud-road, I let the bike slide under my thighs while gaining balance to legs.

Don't tell me accidents curb your confidence, not to mention Andreas Nikolaus "Niki" Lauda(and many on those lines, & stop grinning). He was sensible on public roads, or so it's told.

To paraphrase: One need to weigh Risk vs Reward very carefully. Though rewards are tempting, risks might end up scarring you for life. If you can't weigh, you're a trouble on road and must be avoided at all circumstances.

Meeting with an accident in high speed with surely change your careless harsh style into aggressive yet extremely careful riding.
