  • A Motorcycling App for your smartphones

In this day and age where pretty much everybody has a smartphone and the prices of having fallen low enough for people on a tight budget also being able to afford one has brought about a whole different way of thinking when doing something.

There are apps for your smartphones which provide you with a variety of information from news to grocery shopping to social networking to car pooling and a lot more to boot.

This begets the question what about a "Biking App". What would the passionate biker in India want to have in a smartphone app.

In an ideal world an app would know when the petrol tank is running low on fuel and send me a coupon code which i could redeem at the next fuel pump for free petrol! Unfortunately we do not live in an ideal world and have to pay for the liquid gold. Much more precious for us bikers than the solid yellow gold!

So what would you want in a Biking App? Information on road conditions, fuel bunks, dhabas ahead while touring? Information on SVCs, reminders, parts for maintenance? Info on the latest launches around the world? Info about weather conditions for your weekend ride? Or simply to connect with like minded bikers in the vicinity to catch up for a cuppa of chai and samosa or dosa and nariyal paani.

Share your needs and wants from a biking app and how would you put it to good use!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

What we want would need a very heavy app.

GPS is a given. Gmaps actually is good in pointing bunks, route and various POI. Yes, people can actually pin good mechs and svc on the same for others to benefit.
An addition can be frequented route by tourers which need not be the shortest, but one that would give best of all worlds.

Apart from what Divya said, I'd like service due reminder, oil change reminder, and the insurance renewal reminders in the app...

Also, ability to add some friends and show their real time location on a map so that i know who is closest to me in case of a break down.

I guess Google Latititude had this feature. Sadly, the app didn't take off as expected and it was taken off last year.

Tyre shops (who sells at better price, has more options in brands etc.), SVC / good garage at remote locations (while touring/general purpose), detour options enroute going some place, location of other biker buds in vicinity (not sure if this is feasible or not), nearest petrol bunk (incase of running dry), GPS, good food joints (highway/within city) , local garage / mechanic within city limits, spare parts shop, engine oil selling shops.

But as a biker, the app should have a feature which helps us connect with bikers across the country.

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones

I think its a great concept to have an App for bikers. There must be someone who must do it in India.

A Biker App must have something which will

                a. Help me keep memoirs of my Explorations with my Ride
                b. A list of accessible Garages/Service stations
                c. GPS
                d. The ability for a Rider to maintain a checklist

Also, love suggestions of plotting other bikers on the map so you can hitch/call out for help if needed!

And so many more come to mind! As XBhp We have so many motorcycle centric brands like Castrol working with us, can we ask if this is in the works or can be worked?

Hey Bud! I think though Pune Infra is still way better than Mumbai in terms of City planning and overall space usage!

One more add-on, incase of any mishap, location of nearest police station / hospital, emergency number of that highway. This would be helpful to all in general.

                    What apps I use
                    1. Mileage app has all features, engine oil change, mileage calculation, database of petrol filling etc etc.
                    2. Ulaysse speedometer shows tip speed, avg speed time taken.
                    3. SYGIC- best app for navigation, far better than Google maps and top point is, you don't need TO HAVE A hefty 3 g roaming data plan that'll burn your pockets more than the petrol itself. I did 800kms ride through UP, RAJASTHAN, DELHI, HARYANA and never asked a single soul about road, and all worked out flawlessly in a 100₹ 2 g connection.

Sunil sir. You can look into these apps, how they work and may get inspiration.
Also a app should integrate xbhp and feature posting as we do I Facebook. Like if someone is doing leh trip, then the appe should provide quick action for the tourer to update a 160 word status/ info about his whereabouts, what's he doing and may share one two photos. In this way we'll get a LIVE TRAVELOGUE with no worry of forgetting any detail. And by this live travelogue, ppl can suggest/ correct the tourer if he's doing anything wrong or if he's going to. Big help for both tourer and xbhpains. I think this is a unique concept.

                        Also, a feature called
                        LOCATE A XBHPAIN.
in this, first the app will.get data from each xbhpain and his whereabouts and store it in its domain.
Then if someone wants to locate a xbhpain in his vicinity or where he's travelling, he can (if user allows) easily. And may interact/ help/get help from him.

                        Places recommended by xbhpian,
Under this we can create a log of places popular/ recommended by a fellow xbhpain when he visits that area/ or lives there. And this info can.be collected easily by introducing Star rating system of places.

Same follows for petrol bunks, reviews so that a traveller may have no worry of getting cheated by a pump in terms of quality, quantity.
Same follows for SErVICE CENTRES TOO .ratings can describe easily how efficient a svc is.
And for all other products like engine oil, tyre ,repair shops. A rating system will make it easy for you (devs) to recommend a place of user's liking interest.
                        XBHP DHABA. .
under this title, we can show location/ direction of places where regular meetup/g2g occurs.
                        XBHP CHART .
in this, we can tabulate a ranking list on xbhp member based upon their riding experience, trips, safety gears, bike etc ranging from Number 1 to increasing order. This will promote feeling Of safety and travelling on 2 wheels, which are two of the basic motto of this site.
                        Trip planner
As the title say, this will help in preparing for a specific trip and will tell about all aspects.
I've other ideas too, do tell if interested sir.

A trip planner in the app:

                          1. Simple calender to plan your trips
                          2. Daily morning pop-up of checklist starting from the first day. Checklist would include PUC, Documents, riding gear etc.

P.S : Is this related to the surprise being brought to us by John and Castrol ?

With Helmet on, it hard to communicate with pillion sometime. I am looking for such app.

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones

Most of the proposed features here are either satiated by existing apps, or are impractical owing to certain constraints. Some other suggestions seem like meaningless additions. Lets take a case study:

                              The useful ones first:

                              1. SOS Button: Agree wholeheartedly with this one. The proposed app should have a SOS function, which, when activated, would relay the rider's GPS Coordinates along with other details to fellow riders. Ideally, the SOS signal should also include the type of SOS (Accident / Vehicle Breakdown / Non-Accident Medical Help / Other ) and a short one-line comment from the person sending the SOS. It should be capable of sending the SOS signal and GPS coordinates over SMS, incase there is a loss of internet connection (GPS works without an internet connection)
                              2. Fuel and Maintenance Logs: There are several apps on the market which cater to this demand, but none come close to a complete package. I have myself tried close to 15 different apps on the market before settling for Fuel Calculator, and this too, is not a complete package, as in, it loses the maintenance log. An ideal package should include a fuel tracker with intuitive and interactive reports (I love Fuel Calculator's reports, even though it has no filter for a date range, and it can't enlarge the charts). In addition to the fuel tracker, the apps should also incorporate an interactive maintenance tracker, which should be capable of recording all the maintenance activities carried out on your bike, should be capable of reminding you of your next scheduled service, your next oil change etc, based on preset parameters. With all my collective experience, none of the apps on the Market fufils this requirement as seamlessly as I expected.
                              3. Trip Log: I find this one being useful, and though I use a different app for the time being, I feel it would serve the purpose if it were to be integrated with the above functions into a single app. So, every time I plan a ride, I would create a new entry and the app would log all the statistics total distance travelled, total time taken, average speed, total moving time, total stopped time, maximum speed, route log, etc. As of now, SpeedView Pro manages all the logging for me, but the biggest flaw is that the log is only exposted as a GPX file which I have to separately view on a 3rd party viewer. An inbuilt report generator which would collate and view reports on the device itself would be great.

Some features that I feel are redundant/unrealistic:

                              1. Mapping and Planning: In terms of planning, nothing works better than Google Maps. Fire up GMaps, input the start and endpoints, drag and drop the waypoints to modify a route to your liking, and share a link to the map with yourself/your buddies for reference. I don't think anything can get easier than that. Navigation might be a constraint, especially if the explored area isn't pre-cached, but I guess most smartphone users are aware how to cache a section of the map for offline use - it's as easy as 1-2-3
                              2. Locating Spares Dealers, Service Centers, Mechanics: The data in an app would only be as accurate as the database behind it, and hence, most of the data drawn from the internet would be pretty much useless. In order for the proposed objective to work ideally, we would need to build an exhaustive database of individual parts for 100+ models of bikes across lakhs of dealerships and that database would need frequent updates. Confused? Let's see an example. I need to buy a footpeg for my CBR in Bangalore. I fire up this proposed app - and start searching for CBR250 footpeg. Will it be able to show me which particular Honda ASC has the footpeg in stock on that particular day? 99% chances are, it won't be able to. Making the data available at a moment's notice would be too big a challenge. So, then, what will it show? Just a list of Honda Service centers in Bangalore? Wait, can't I already find it on Google?
                              3. The Social Aspect: It's a sad truth that our smartphones have pathetic standby times, and active GPS and internet connections will sap the juice out of our batteries in just a couple of hours. Would a rider, therefore, prefer to drain his battery just so that others can track him? I guess I wouldn't do that. Again, very commonly used apps like Whatsapp have a location-sharing feature, which can be used if required. The SOS function too, if implemented, would broadcast a rider's location to all users of the app. A person needn't keep broadcasting his location throughout his ride. Burdening our overladen phones with redundant functions just wont help any cause.

And finally, no offence to Deathmate.Zed, but a checklist for PUC and Riding Gears? Break Please! A person shouldn't be calling himself a rider if he forgets his documents and gear every morning!

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!
