Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones
Problem with these kind of software is they aren't available for different type of mobile operating system. for example my GF has Android and I use Windows. Windows doesn't have the Android intercom software. So a universal biking software will help!Originally posted by plasmabhai View Post@Dreamwalker987 you are looking for this app -> Android IntercomLife Motto: live, love, laugh... but when all goes wrong:ready, aim, FIRE!!...

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones
Interesting thread, I wonder if this has got anything to do with TheBiker app which was launched yesterday by John Abraham.
Adding on to what requirements others have posted here, I'm looking forward to a Biker app which will have the following,
- a reminder for Insurance, PUC, Tax, Period services
- fuel log
- maps (with nearby facilities marked)
- check-in facility (including info on nearby check-in by others using same app)
- a status updater (to xbhp or social media sites)
- notes
- walkie talkie facility
All the above requirements are available through various apps but if it can be in one, then it would be really convenient for a Biker.

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones
Fair enough - to be really phone to phone connected (like direct connection via bluetooth or wifi) someone will need to develop a cross platform communication protocol. That has been attempted but I don't think standardized let alone commercialised. It is much easier to achieve cross platform connectivity via an intermediary (i.e. your phone's internet connection). One such push to talk (walkie talkie) service is voxer . Being compatible with android, iOS, windows etc. it might seem useful and worth a look.Originally posted by Dreamwalker987 View PostProblem with these kind of software is they aren't available for different type of mobile operating system. for example my GF has Android and I use Windows. But from a biker's perspective - its completely useless.---

No offence taken!
What you are talking about is an ideal situation sir. I agree that it is a pre-requisite and should'nt need reminders and that real and serious bikers don't need to be reminded of these. But we are humans and tend to forget. The thing about PUC was to have a reminder saying the PUC has expired. I don't know about others but sometimes i find myself at a loss for missing out on renewing my PUC by a few days. We do not live in a perfect world and I only meant to have these as some features in the app..not as necessary features though.

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones
I used Sygic on an iPhone without a local SIM card in India last year. Worked perfect. While there are similar apps available, these are only as good as the battery life on the smartphone. If you rely on a smartphone GPS you have to have it powered and watch for overheating shutdown problems. Been there. Done that!

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones
yes.This will be very useful.
Pinning best mechs, hospital, police station, traffic, hotels, motels and especially petrol bunks..
And if GPS is linked, traffic and climatic conditions can be updated too.

Re: A Motorcycling App for your smartphones
More than anything! I guess I'd only use my phone for navigation and and find out places for accommodation, food and to find a mechanic or a puncture shop (which is a a rarity as I get my bike checked and fixed before any trip) And to add tow service numbers around the area (had a difficult time finding one when I crashed on Hassan bypass road).
Anything else will just drain battery life.
So how will this app stand out from the rest, why not integrate a proper real time weather monitoring system along with gps! So the app would tell me, how far the next accessible pit stop would be and whether or not the weather will be clear till reaching there. If not it'll give me a notification to wait it out. The implementation is not that difficult, just needs a clever algorithm, all the api's are already public from yahoo weather and google for the maps. I would love to collaborate with someone in bring this to reality.
PS: I have the castrol's biker app and its the most disgusting piece of code ever typed
