  • Custom Touring Bike...Hybrid of Touring+Motocross

    Requirements
    a. Should be able to take 2 passengers.
    b. Adequately powerful with good midrange torque(Touring).
    c. Should be able to take our roads...good suspension travel and ground clearance.
    d. Good range...i.e Generous fuel tank...efficient engine.
    e. Provision for Luggage

    Options One
Look for an suitable engine, make a frame around it and make a custom bike. It has its own charm but this path is filled with more blocks than meets the eye. Right from finding the right engine, designing the frame, swing arm, suspension setup etc etc. Though this whole thing is not impossible considering my experience in tinkering bikes and other vehicles and being able to cut metal and tube as I want and knowing how to weld (TIG).
    Option Two
Take my current bike Honda CBR 250 R ABS make some frame mod on it like:-
    1. Extend the swing arm.
    2. Stiffen the front fork and extend the travel.( May be a custom fork from Racetech etc)
    3. Do some sprocket mod to able to cruise at about 100-120 kmph with adequate low speed torque .
    4. Mod for charging point etc to hook up GPS/Phone.

Option two is definitely easier and more feasible but may be it will be less satisfying to the tinkerer within me. Never the less would like suggestion of the community on all aspects.

        1. Extend the swing arm. You can happily do it without a glitch. hunt for the right swing arm else some expert hands on welding/joints..
        2. Stiffen the front fork and extend the travel.( May be a custom fork from Racetech etc) : ninja 250 springs are a direct fit. else increase the spacer height inside the suspension. stiffen with 10w/15w oil and you are good.
        3. Do some sprocket mod to able to cruise at about 100-120 kmph with adequate low speed torque . stock is 14/38 / experiment with 15/38 then 15/37.. it should quech your thirst
        4. Mod for charging point etc to hook up GPS/Phone. instead take a direct new wiring from battery and hook phone charging under seat else wiring inside the fairing and a cigrette lighter socket near speedoconsole with a fuse in between the wiring.. 200INR job

Option two is definitely easier and more feasible but may be it will be less satisfying to the tinkerer within me. Never the less would like suggestion of the community on all aspects.

Option One - Is good for your learning & you get satisfied.. Trust me, Will take atleast a year or two to build. MOST IMPORTANTLY, you cannot tour on it until you make it street legal by getting it approved from governmental agencies.. Which is almost next to impossible as budget shoots up & so does technical issues.

Option Two - Good one!!! I own a standard CBR 250R and am satisfied, Good Sport tourer & a commuter too.. make little changes & no one notices, less legal trouble.

Erm i am a no expert here, but here's my suggestion : how about Bullet 500 std? Does satisfy almost all your requirements.

            a. Yes, it can carry 2 passengers comfortably.
            b. It does.
            c. It can.
            d. Big fuel tank - yes / Engine effeciency - They say the newer enfields are better and effecient, but i am not sure.
            e. You get every possible sorts of mods for an Enfield to pile up luggage.

            P.S :
Recently rode my friend's new RE Bullet 500 std, and boy was I impressed. I found it way better than the Classics / TB (350s) - found vibes in low RPMs but post 40kmph i could hardly feel the vibes, and then the vibes came back post 105kmph.
+ That friend of mine did a Honeymoon ride from Bangalore - Spiti with his wife, on that bike !!
And the flaw i find in Bullet is - Tube-type tyres.

It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

Better idea is cbr itself.Uce engine is not comparable to cbr engine.
Removing the fairings,a bigger windscreen, custom tank(if you really need it),better tyres, luggage provisions would be the way to go.
"Vibes transmitted from crank shaft to frame, then through the bearings of the head stock and into the stem where it meets the triple clamp and into the clip-ons where it is greeted with great pleasure by my hands"-ratfighter mod rtr

I agree with you on RE issue. Engines are very different and come whatever reliability of Honda will be anyway better. Regarding luggage, tyre n fuel tank range
                a. Luggage racks can be customised with custom bags or panniers
                b. Tyres can be changed
                c. Custom tank needs to be done for more fuel capacity, refilling every 220 km or so removing all that track bag etc is a big PIA. ;-)
                d. Bracket n charging system for mobile not a problem.

Only problem I am facing is how to get little more power out of the bike n how to increase space for a pillion?

                A. Custom swing arm with modification to rear end frame holding the seat, some change /stiffening of rear shocker due to longer pivot arm.
                B. Only sprocket change or some other mod as free flow airfilter, Porting n polishing the head, high lift cams, custom ECU map or something else to increase the power, this part I am really confused.

A little more power would mean loss of at least some amount of reliability. At the current scenario performance modifications cannot be considered value for money considering the bhp gained.
If you really need something more powerful,a good idea would be to sell cbr and get a secondhand d390.I know its not much of a tourer but with proper mods it can be made one.

I agree with your observation on power mods. I am already running a polished head set up... Smoothens up things a bit, a lil eager at lower rpm but nothing else.

390 seems a good option but the fuel tank is a killer. Have not seen a duke in person, I will surely see one soon to gauge the feasibility of enhancing the fuel capacity and increasing passenger and luggage space.
