  • Sunday morning ride turns sour

    cool and calm sunday morning-perfect for a beach ride...this is how 1st march was....so set out for a ride on a friend's bike for Kapu beach,26kms from my hostel in manipal....evrything was perfect...nice weather,clean white sand,me with all my riding gears and the bike..me and my friend siddharth(pillion) took a no of snaps and then headed out...dropped siddharth at udupi and headed towards Maravanthe beach(popularly known as Turtle Bay),56kms from manipal...nice roads but scary busses and trucks...with an alert mind i had reached there and after sumtime headed back....entered Udupi at around 1.30pm and felling content after a short 110kms ride(roughly)...but my joy was shortlived...riding at a safe speed of 30kmph,i saw a bus cuming from the opposite direction..cautiously kept my lane and was about to cross the bus when a dumb lidless guy on a RX100 suddenly zoomed in from behind trying to cut between me and the bus and Bang..he hit me from the right side and we both were thrown off and skidded some distance...another bus coming behind me stopped merely few inches from my head.....my riding gears(full helmet,gloves,elbow guards) managed to save me from any bruises but as i fell i immediately rolled over trying not to let the head come in contact with concrete...as a result got a fractured right hand wrist,soft tissue injury on the right leg and my soul shaken for 10 mins when i saw myself in front of the tyre...the other guy sufferd a lot of bruises and cuts but surpisinly didint hurt his head....we were helped by the locals and the other guy left the scene after a heated argument and me threatening his balls off.....rode back to hostel in that condition and later got the plastering done at the hospital....
    What i am really mad anout is the way people ride here in karnataka...i have been to few states but nowhere is the situation so bad....there is no helmet law here...no-one wears a helmet and rides like a maniac...the busses and trucks are even worse....people dont have basic sense on how to ride in traffic and overtake...i have always cum across this situation since i shifted here and i have been doubly caustious riding here...even then this is what i get...
    You can take the ride away from me but you cannot take the rider out of my soul.........

      aryan,thanks for the quick approval....
      really one should look at people riding here in Manipal,Udupi and NH17.....you feel like bashing up those people......when i went to hospital for treatment,you wouldnt beleive that 3 other bike accident cases came in..and all of them were seriously injured and in critical condition and needed immediate operation...the doctor also confirmed that such cases are more common in this area...and was surprised to hear that i was wearing "so much" protection.....what did he ask me you know??? ""racing bike chala rahe the kya""

        I am sorry about your accident and good to hear that you are safe. And though helmet law is actually there, people hardly use it.

          hmm riding is NH 17 between manipal and south end is scary, that too if the roads are newly paved.
          Good to know that you are okay. What about the bike ?

                        @motormania: Take care man and get well soon! Good to know that nothing major happened to you.

                        And thanks for posting this, I plan on riding around that area later this month. Will make it a point to be extra careful!

                          @praful

                          yes you definetly have to be extra careful in this stretch particularly if this is your first time in this area.....i had gone on the same stretch(Manipal-Turtle Bay) the previous night also...and is the place scary....the buses here are mad i tell you....you whats the scariest and most irritating part??.they will definetly overtake you no matter how but at the same time while overtaking you,as soon as they come near you,they will blow their super powerful horn scaring the wits out of you.

                            I completely agree on this. The stretch between Udupi and Manipal is about 65kms and the mandate for the drivers is to complete the stretch in 60 mins including the pickups on the way. There are about 18 bus companies vying for business on this stretch. The extra competetion compels the bus drivers to drive very rashly and is no surprise that the population around this area is always under check due to the contribution of these drivers. The owners provide extra incentives to the drivers if they complete the stretch within 60 mins. They dont avoid picking up the passengers because that's where the real moolah comes in.

                            So that's where the equation is.
