Considering present Bangalore, yes, but that is until you get involved in any incident.

Your NOC will be invalid by then

Q: Where do you want to sell your bike once you decide to sell it? Based on that you need to decide what to do

I've been riding a TN bike in BLR for almost 4 years now.

      - Re-registration not needed (only if you want to sell your bike in BLR)
      - NOC not needed (only needed If you re-register here in BLR)
      - Life Time Road Tax (pay only after you have spent 11 months in the state)
      - Cops issues, a few years back there was harassment for outside state vehicles. That has not happened in the last 2.5 years. But off-late its on the rise again. But I am yet to be stopped for out of state vehicle.

My advice, just ride. If you are caught 2-3 times for Road Tax only then decide to pay.

But yea its illegal to ride without paying tax post 11 months of entry into the state. So ride/drive at your own risk.

I have a TN registered bike in BLR for last 4 years and a MH registered car for 2 years....I refuse to pay the tax for the simple reason that I find the system to be flawed and don't believe that my money for the tax is going to be used for anything good anyways. The RTO guys are just out to fleece the public!

I still wait for the day for a unified taxation structure across the country! Feels like I am living in different countries when moving between states!

You have to obtain Karnataka number (re-register) if you are staying here for more than a year. More details here: Transport Department

Tax is calculation is also available in the same website as a MS-Word document.

P.S That said, you can ride the bike without going through this. Cops don't stop for 'routine checking' like they used to earlier. If you break a signal or caught riding on the wrongside, etc then you are in trouble.

Since you already have the NOC with you i suggest go ahead with the redg and get it over with. Also, consider your stay in Bangalore, if its going to bee for more than 3 years to say i suggest you should re-redg the bike.

The Jayanagar 4th block RTO has been shifted just above the bus-stand and its on the 3rd or 4th floor (not sure).Check with them if the vehicle can be redg there. IMO there should not be a problem if incase "Indranagar" is mentioned on the NOC.

You ca drive the vehicle for 11 months with out having it re-redg, but please ensure you carry valid proofs. Maybe the transport copy - train, pvt carrier, etc. or the toll fees paid (incase you rode the bike to Bangalore)

All of this is only an advice, the decision is all yours. But let me warn you the taxes are pretty high here and can cost about 11.5 to 12% of the ex-showroom price.

P.S please have a copy of the original invoice for the bike purchased. Helps in calculating the road-tax if not available the RTO will simply charge the road-tax based on the current value of the bike.

            1. IIRC, you cannot just pay the tax without re-registering, you have to register it according to the Motor Vehicle Act.
            2. One year (I'm sure about it)
            3. For 1 year delay, there's a penalty of 50% excess road-tax amount.
            4. Yup, but not in KN but in WB, and it surely is not good .
            5. 7~8%

Its the other way around. First you have to pay tax (even before that apply for change of address) and within 11 months apply for re-registration.

I will be taking my 1 year 2 months old P220, registered in Mysore, Karnataka to Guwahati, Assam permanently after 2 months. Is there a way to keep the KA mark, but change the address to that of Guwahati? Am filing for the NOC in coming days but heard that NOC is valid only for 7 days? Even if I get it on the day of journey, 6 days would be gone riding! Also, I can get 85% refund of road tax paid in Karnataka, equal to 9.7k. Any clue how this refund process is to be initiated and the time taken to receive the amount?

Initiate the process & probably your children or grandson will receive on normal course.

Just now read your post saying 6 months validity of NOC. An agent tried to fool me!

What if I de-register it now and take a temporary registration? I don't want 10k go down in drain!

Also is there any insurance complexities involved?

Vickks - You need to learn a lot of things from xBhp; all your questions are more of fantasy than reality!!! Temp registration is only possible with vehicles that are just out of showroom/vehicles yet to be registered.

You simply go through the above posts & take a call!!!

^ I searched a lot these days and still searching, but didn't get relevant information. Its just out of curiosity that I asked coz I don't want to get lost in govt offices. Am trying to pull in every possible way to save my 10k coz am not rich enough to let it go. Just wanted to get some details from senior members who have taken these troubles in past. Its not fantasy but rather reality.

One year MV tax is only in few cities and states. After the issuance of NOC from the original RTO, some RTOs consider 180 days re-register period, some accept the NOC within one week or one month only, thereafter they impose a slab based penalty . Re-registering will not cost you 10k because I paid 12k for my 2004 Maruti 800 to register it in Gujarat in Oct 2011. Getting new number is complete piece of mind. Getting hooked by cops and tolerating their nuisance gives us more stress. I am staying on border area, residence in Mumbai and work in Gujarat, believe me its worth paying the tax and live happily. Moreover other motorists tend to misbehave seeing out state number plate, even for your own safety its good, tracking a vehicle having other state registration is not easy.
