  • Bike Stolen? Documentation to file your Claim

Mods, I am not sure if there is any thread for this topic, if its there then please remove this thread. I saw people discussing their stolen bikes and Since, I am already a very unlucky victim of this matter with head-hammering experience with cops and insurance company from the last 9 months, I would like to help people who are illiterate of filing the necessary documentation in case of vehicle theft so that they may escape exploitation upto some extent.

Whenever you vehicle get stolen, dial 100 on the spot not because cops will get your bike back but this is a very important step. According to insurance company's regulation : You must inform insurance company and police within 24 hours of vehicle theft. Do have a good look on the cop who takes your charge as he'll be the guy who'll get your police related documents from the PS in the future.

Next step is to call the insurance company, sending a speed post or telegram is another good option because in this case you'll have the proof that you've have informed the insurance company. Insurance inspector will visit your home for inspection and he'll make you aware about all the docs needed to file the claim (don't bribe him, this may put your case in negative image in his mind). There will be 2 very important people in every vehicle theft case : Police Officer and Insurance Inspector. You'll need to be very warm and soft with them and will have to be in touch with them regularly.

There are 2 steps of receiving the claim :

Step 1 : Claim Form Submission with necessary docs :

    1. F.I.R in original.
    2. Original RC
    3. Original Insurance Copy
    4. Original and Valid Pollution Certificate
    5. Financier N.O.C (if financed)
    6. Both Bike's Keys (Original)
    7. Your Statement
    8. Your neighbour Statement (to make case appear stronger)
    9. Certificate from National Crime Bureau Authority.
    10. Vehicle Non-Traceable report from Police Station (which comes after 3 months of theft)
    11. Original Bike Purchase Bill with receipt
    12. Police informed report (100 number receipt or statement of respected police officer who is inspecting your case)

When these documents are submitted along with the claim form, they (Insurance company) will ask for :

    Step # 2 : Approval

    1. Transfer of Bike RC to Insurance Company
    2. Signed receiving copy in advance (that you have received your claim etc)
    3. Respective Police Station's S.H.O's approval; (that if bike is found later on, it will be given to insurance company not to you).

    Important Tips :
    1. Always be patient and soft with police and insurers if you want to have your claim, they may torcher you with delays but you'll have to be careful and warm to handle the situation.
    2. Keep visiting police station (you may have to visit them dozens of time).
    3. You may have to do setting with your police officer (chalta hai bhai agar paisa chahiye to) This is India.
    4. Keep in touch with insurance inspector.

    Bottomline :
Guys, you should be very caseful with your vehicle. No insurance company or police give a damn what has happened with you. You are own responsible for everything. You'll have to encounter the real system of Indian judiciary and have to face the curruption at every step.

Be consistant and smart. You can get your money within 6 months.

    Good Luck.

If this does not exist already, this I think will deserve to be stuck on the board.

If we have to produce original RC and Insurance copy, then is it OK to keep a xerox copy in the bike? I friend of mine was fined, as he only had xerox documents and not the originals. Since then I have started keeping originals in the bike. Could someone please throw some light on this?

If we are supposed to keep the originals inside the bike, how on earth will we be able to submit originals in case the vehicle is stolen.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Are you saying that we can keep a xerox copy with the bike and originals safe at home?

We can keep xerox copies of registration, NOC (For out of state vehicles) and insurance cover note inside the bike (in a locked compartment) so in case of theft we do not lose the 3 most important documents proving your ownership of the vehicle. The rest, i.e. Driving license, P(ollution)U(nder)C(ontrol) can be kept safely in your wallet as you can be fined if you produce xerox/colour xerox copies of these instead of originals.

Keeping originals in the vehicle itself is a VERY bad idea. Just keep photocopies which are attested. If any cop challenges you on this, ask to speak to his superior or do whatever it takes... they will give you any crap to make money.

yash.rsa, about the list you have given - do you know if this requirement is the same across all insurers? Seems its not so. Some of the things required by your insurer is ridiculous. Who is your insurer? Any opinions about them? Always give a thought about which company you are insuring with. Enquire about the documentation required, service, cashless garage list (some dont have this at all!), premium, IDV, online renewal, etc., before buying a policy.

u only need attested xerox copies of the original ones to b kept in ur bike..
no need of keeping originals, keep them at home safely..
if u have a smart card issued to u then u can get a duplicate smart card issued, keeping the duplicate in ur bike n original at home.
if ur friend got fined for keeping just the xerox copies of the originals ones then it was because of his ignorance.
wat if ur bike gets stolen with the original docs in it.?? ur bike is as good as gone..

These days we have RC smart card which can be kept in the wallet. A colour copy of Insurance can solve the purpose, dont keep xerox. Polution certificate must be original.

Rightly said, colour copies should be considered.

My insurer is Oriental. All the insurers have almost same requirement with a couple of exceptions..may be. They would'nt care how have you renewed your insurance (by online / by agent) or how much have you premieum is paid...they only ask for the certificate.

Agreed, one should'nt keep anything inside the bike...never. Insurance company wont accept any excuse of the missing docs. If you dont have your docs ready and upto date, forget the claim.
