  • To Clutch or Not to

    Hey Guys

i just posted an intro ... hope the Mods approve it... neverthless

I do know a bit or two about biking with my Bullet - But this question is
plain silly - but let me ask :-)

Question is NOT necessarilly to just Bullet though:

I am at say 50 - 55 KM range speed and I see a signal at a distance (imagine a nice free road). NOW - There are TWO options

#A --> I leave my bike with CLUTCH ON / stop Acceleration till say the speed reaches to say 30 (engine sot of starts to hit - u know). Then start chaging gearts to lower one.

#B --> cClose Acceleration AND Start holding the clutch IMMEDIATELY till the vehicle hits 30 KM and change gears to lower.

Now the clutch holding makes the vehicle smoother - But is that Right ?

How does one typically does that

    Thanks for the tips

    VJ

I never hold the clutch. If there is a clean road ahead and i need to stop at a signal, close acceleration, use mild braking if needed. Change gears when engine rpm drops below current power band i.e.starts jerking. holding the clutch surely will make the bike smooth, but this helps in wearing out the clutch and pressure plate.

Thanks for the links Leon nerd! The first one is pretty useless. But old fox's post in the second one is exemplary: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/140321-post6.html

Yeah. Gave the first one to get more questions in mind and then the second one with OF's post to clear all those confusions.

                @IFlyLow
I suggest you to take the first option. By this way, you can make use of the engine braking and thus reducing the wear of the bike parts.

Thanks for the taking time to answer dude...

I understand "clutching" may not be good for the plates... But what i experience is - vehicle sort of "Drags" (more precisely - no acceleration - so vehicle is like slowing down but feels heavy while slowing down) from the upper side of the speed allowed for the gear (i am on at the moment) till I decide to downshift ...

Is that normal or something wrong on the engine ?

^ yaeh that is engine braking..normally there shouldn't be any braking ..wehn the bike is on higher gears..i mean not more than when the bike is on lower gears ....keeeping clutch depressed may damage clutch plates....

IFlyLow : In the scenario you mentioned, the better option is to cut the throttle off at a distance and start braking slowly with combined down-shifts so that when the bike comes to stand-still it should be in the 1st gear.

                      That's the smoothest & logical way !

On your Bullet if you have right gear shifter, You can use the Neutral finder as well. Come quite handy when you are in traffic.Again you will have to use the same at speeds less than 30Kmph.

Hey @mangaloreAviators - Thanks .. I own a bullet too .. and yeah netural finder is what I always use .. The question was more so targetted at 125 (I own a Flame) and others which require us to shift to gears

Would be great .. if u can pass on your views with non-inter neutral available bikes

Its generally a good idea to use as little clutch as needed. Like I mean use clutch only when you need it.

So when I slow down I start braking normally, and as speed drops for each gear I breifly de-clutch shift down, re-engage clutch, repeat again if needed.... Until I'm in 1st, and at a complete standstill....

But I still have not got how do downshift without using the clutch. OF sir has mentioned that you have to raise rpm quickly and shift down, and the lower gear fits in perfect. Do you use slight clutch to raise engine rpm and simultaneously shift down or dont touch the clutch at all...?
                              You get the point?? :D
