Safest Bike, by my experience.

By My experience the safest bike is Bullet in India. I own Electra 5s and here are my comments on it.

1. I fitted ABS from saferideabs.com. So now the front disc doesn't lock up the tyre. Due to Disc-brakes the braking had gone better than drum brakes.

2. It is heavy and very well balanced. So road grip is exceptionally good.

3. It is loud, so attracts attention. Majorly for other 2 wheelers and walking people, it is dangerous to be around.

4. People in India have a respect/attitude towards Bullet. And somehow they feel that bullet riders are aliens from any form of understanding point of view.

5. Try waving to a truck driver while overtaking him. He will definitely go to a side and would not race.

This one is so true. There's one instance just a few months old I can recollect:

Grom Gachibowli Y junction towards ToliChowki (Hyderabad) most vehicles were doing about 50 KMPH. I was on the R15 trying to zip past the vehicles at about 70-80 KMPH but there were very few gaps and even those get blocked by someone by the time I point my bike into it. All of a sudden there is a thump coming closer and automatically one line got cleared. It is a Bullet 500 and that guy was doing about 80KMPH with a strong thump.

I crossed him but got stuck again finding way. He comes closer and he gets way automatically. Then I realized that the best way to go faster is to follow him When he realized that I am following him he increased the speed to about 100 KMPH (needless to say, he didn't loose me in the RVM's) but he had to take a turn very soon.

So, in India you need the sound for people to realize that something is coming. What shall we the lesser mortals do? Get some loud speaker affixed on the bike and play the billet's thump through it???

Discussion on safety can be vast. Unlike cars, safety measures are emphasis more on the rider rather than the machine, hence the helmet and protective gears. So its difficult to discuss safety based on the parameters mentioned here.
Anyway, to keep focus on the original post and see which is a safe bike from a practical point like our traffic and not merely technical point that are more relevant to race tracks or technical data sheet.
1. Handling
A: Small and light 50, 100, 200cc bikes will be defenitely better at handling than 1 litre class bikes.
2. Braking
A: Given the trafiic condition, any bike has sufficient braking ability.
3. Build quality
A: any small bikes currently sold in india are good enough as it will hardly matter when you are thrown away from you bike in event of a crash. As far as quality on brakes, suspension etc that may cause failures are concern, all bikes currently sold seem to be good enough for normal day to day commuting
4. Etc??
A: No comment

So if Im forced to give my view on one bike that may be safest based on these points. I would choose FZ-16, as it is small and light(handling in traffic), not powerful (safe against speed. as oppose to what a 1000cc can do) but sufficient power to get out of trouble quickly, good broad tyres (good for its size and weight compare to others)

I understand as some have mentioned "YO" or the small electric bikes. I agree its safe as can be, but Its so slow and sluggish that at times it can prove dangerous. Good for your local neighbourhood, not for general commuting.

Low c.o.g., Light weight, good brakes, well balanced (weight distribution), good tyres...should make a bike lot 'safer', I would vote for FZ and R15.

The safest bike in the Indian scenereo is the CBR250R, cause having ridden the RTR ABS, the bike feels unplanted while panic braking at higher speeds.

If we're talking about stopping power irrespective of ABS then first comes the N250R, brakes way harder than it rips, then comes the R15v1 (Havent had to opportunity to test the v2's handling.)

This definitely the RE Bullet with your wife as the pillion rider
