i always suspected helmets cause hairloss . so maybe all those helmetless riders do have a cause

Keep helmet clean and regularly wash hair . dust and no ventilation i think aggravates hair problems

I would vote for the option, Leave Biking...

ANyways, you can wear a Bandana or a cap on your head and then wear your helmet..
Avoids contact with your hair and is hygienic as well..

There is one particular medicine(tabs) for hairloss named Trichoton. My Aunt used them and said that its quite effective. Even i suffer from severe hairloss. I have a decreased hairline and my hair density is also very less. But i dont bother much as for me Biking is of more importance.

Hair loss due to helmets? That's a new one. Maybe people are blaming the lids instead of their genes. I have been riding for the past many years, and I think I have grown more hair instead of losing them!

I have a helmet with a completely removable liner which I clean once a month. In case people are actually facing a hair loss problem(due to lids), a poor quality helmet and lack of hygiene might be the issue. If covering the hair led to hair loss, most of our brothers in Punjab would have no hair due to constant use of the turban! I lived in Punjab for many years and I noticed that Punjabi's have a far lesser incidence of hair loss as compared to people living in other states. (from what I saw).

Maybe wearing helmets prevents hair loss!

Turban is very light.. I think hair loss is due to constant weight of helmet on hair and heat .
I know one of my cousin, he uses the most poor quality helmet. and has no hair loss.
as gene is considered, non of my ancestors had hair loss.
my dad and grandpa has more hair than me.

Hair loss among males is a normal phenomenon.. for many (majority, i would believe), who aren't so lucky genetically, it gets worse as one grows older. Reversing the process according to me is not possible.

Your genes (and maybe stress as well, all our netas are baldies aren't they..??) are more responsible for hair loss than your poor life saving helmet. The dust and pollution on our roads is probably worse for your hair.

According to me, Helmets leading to hair loss is nothing but an Urban Legend.

Even then, if one might be so concerned about a link between helmets and hairloss, here are a few pointers which might calm down nerves and still keep a lid over his head.

                    1. Many helmets these days come with a removable and washable inner liner.. keep the inner liner clean by washing it in a month's time (if not every week)

                    2. Wearing a Bandana before putting on the helmet (la Segwag / Ganguly style ) is another solution.

What??? Haven't u seen Simoncelli, Stoner, Rossi(2-3 yrs back).. u'll get the answer.

Moreover Wash your hair after every long ride. Helmets actually avoid hairloss by protecting from Dust and Direct sunglight
Those people who tell you not to take chances
They are all missing on what life is about
You only live once so take hold of the chance
Don't end up like others the same song and dance

Just the kinda topic I was wanting to start..... I might be controversial here, but here it goes. Against popular belief that helmets do not cause hair-loss, it is very much true that they are a contributing factor. Before I started riding, I used to have really thick hair. But now my hair is thinning out. I checked this with my relative who is a dermatalogist (and a biker BTW). He did confirm that it is true. Although helmets are not the only contributors, they dont help in slowing it down either!!!

The loss mainly is because of this:

                        1. The weight of the helmet resting on ur head/hair. Its also better to have helmets that dont bob around. Loose bobby helmets not only become unsafe, but also makes ur sweaty hair move around putting stress.
                        2. Not wearing a head scarf.
                        3. The major contributor is - combing ur hair when its full of sweat. Thats what causes major degradations. Thats when ur hair-root is weak.
                        4. Failing to wash ur hair atleast twice a week. Not washing ur hair frequently with helmet use leads to a dirty/smelly hair and accumulation of dandruff. Especially in India where sweating is high, too much of sweat leads to infections as well.

U will be able to avoid hair loss to an extent if u avoid the above.

He did give me these details, since he knew that I would wear a helmet even if I go bald!!! To his patients, he just gives a cool advice - helmet does not cause hair loss. Cos being a doctor he knows the value of head/brain/life over hair.

well, if my head is not yet completely bald it is because of using a helmet regularly and keeping it clean. hair inside a snug fit helmet is better than in open air with all the dust and diesel smoke.

A bandana can be worn inside the helmet. This will keep the inner padding of the helmet clean. Regular use of a good hair oil before shampooing the hair can be helpful in this regard.

I use a inner cap which I got for free when I purchased the helmet. Try to get one for yourself
