i was going through this thread and found out that
    • you are not technically inclined towards bikes, then why did you put K&N on your bike.
    • you don't even have time. you even mentioned at one place that you don't have time to waste on bike. if you are really a biker, you will never use the word "waste" for time invested in your bike.
please don't feel offended, but this is my personal opinion, go to an authorised service center, tell them your problem, get K&N removed, revert to stock status.

if you don't like this answer, and still want to use K&N, finish your exams first, then start learning few things about your bike by reading your owner's manual first and then search on internet. increase your knowledge. find a good mechanic.

i will tell you a story, i have converted my bike to DC and installed an HID.
it took me months to get the job done in right way. i searched the internet, asked my freinds here on xbhp. tried a few things myself, some were flops, some experiment went right. almost every evening i was thinking about my bike for atleast 2-3 months, i invested all saturday evenings and sundays on my bike. i also invested some money (HID isn't cheap) and after some failures, i finally got succcess. and you know i am a married guy, my wife went crazy for those few months. she said that i like my bike more than i like her. coz i was not able to spend time with her.now she is ok coz my bike's light is better than 50 % of four wheelers on road. one day i was with my wife on bike and stopped at a traffic signal, after that two guys in there brand new ZMR chased us and requested to stop. they asked me about my HID light, its cost, its installation etc. which i happily told them. when they were gone my wife said that "atleast somebody asked you about your HID light, must be something unique". AND I HAD A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE THAT LASTED QUITE A LONG TIME. THE SATISFACTION WAS IMMENSE. AND THE FEELING CAN NOT BE EXPRESSED IN WORDS. YOU MUST BE A BIKER FROM THE CORE OF YOUR HEART TO UNDERSTAND THAT FEELING.

so the moral of the story is that you should carry out these modifications only if your are a biker ---from the depths of your heart.

    so now you decide yourself.

i stumbled onto this thread by accident and .. this is one of the threads that should not be deleted in archival!!

        before anyone gets upset...

i agree 100% with princesirohi. He's done a spot on write up and.. no other way to say this, OP, I hope u learnt your lesson. Revert your bike to stock since you have no idea what you're doing and mechs will take you for a ride. I guarantee it. You'll lose a lot more money if you continue with 'performance mods'.The 2 grand you spend on feeble mods like k&n will cost you many thousands later on!! Adios, and thanks for the laughs

Very true. For every avid bike enthusiast the dialogues at home are the same.Even after 25 yrs of married life my wife says that the bike is my first wife....and the real wife is neglected. Without passion there is no life

You are terribly mistaken. I love my bike so much...that I can't describe it through words...Well, you don't know how important my exam is..so you can't really understand my position, nevermind. And dude, just because I don't know to work on my bike, it doesn't mean that I'm not technically inclined. I understand the theory, but practically working is totally different. And FYI, I am a biker for hardly 6 months time and I'm 18 years old. I know much more than what you would have known in your initial years of biking. And before fitting K&N, I did 2 months of research going through all the threads about it in ********** and xbhp. Every thread said, upjetting has to be done after fitting K&N and I then started scouting around for a good mechanic. Everybody from chennai told that this guy to whom I'd gone is the best, and so I went to him after a lot of inquiring. He seems to be very technically sound and good, all aprila, Cbr1000 bikes and all he was working on. He hasn't exactly ruined my bike, he told initially itself that Upjetting is a trial and error method and takes some time to find the best jet. Anyways, I'll go to him after my exams and Ask him to work on it again...ITS easy to give up and go back to stock. I will never give up, only weak people do it. Please stop thinking that you're the only true biker and others just regard it as a machine...You have no right to say that I am not a true biker without even knowing me. Seriously, very bad interpretation of the thread by you. -__-

Dear Abhi6, the way you were expressing the problems and your own admission of not knowing fully about the mods, had lead me to think that you are a newbie to mods. Your 18 year old spirit is quite evident. It is because you loved the bike and wanted the best from it you had done what you did. But doing things without fully understanding the variables always result in our not getting what we want. That's why I had also told you to revert back to stock to save the bike and your frustration. You have Exams coming up which is important, after which you can concentrate on the bike project.
If you are not reverting back then drive slowly and don't rip. When you get the time sit down calmly and do your mods perfectly.

                • i had clearly written that its my personnel opinion and so don't feel offended.
                • if you really felt bad. i m sorry dude.
                • we were trying to understand your situation from whatever you yourself had mentioned.
                • i had also mentioned that even if you don't want to revert to stock status, finish your exams first, then go for mods. read the post properly dude.
                • just for your info, since you raised the issue. when i was in 10th std (15 yr.s age) in school, i used to open, dissasemble, repair and reassemble all parts including engine and gearbox, clutch plates etc of my dad's lambretta 150cc scooter. i had also modified the headlight of my dad's scooter when i was in 11th std.

take it in a good spirit, it was a brotherly advise. think and decide wisely. whatever u decide u should not regret later.

lets wish you good luck. both for your exams and your mods.

@psr Thank you, I'll do the same

@princesirohi Man, I felt really bad when you were like "so the moral of the story is that you should carry out these modifications only if your are a biker ---from the depths of your heart." I got my bike after so many incidents....took so much pain to convince my dad to get me a bike.....He told me to get any car, but was adamant not to buy me a bike....After great difficulties, I convinced him and got it ! I'm really passionate about my bike....I investigated so much before even thinking of fitting K&N....Anyways, forget it !! Cool ! I won't be using my bike much till Nov 21st, On Nov 22nd, I'll go sit in my mechanic's garage and I'm not moving from there till he gets it right for me... Anyways thanks a lot of your advices....
@ALL thanks a lot for sharing a lot of info with me, spending your precious time..Cheers!

After your exams dedicate a whole day to it. Else I suggest learn how to swap jets and do it yourself. Try out jets of all sizes. Trust me...there's no other feeling more satisfying than getting it right all by yourself.

Guyz, I forgot to mention this...Initially after doing a lot of jetting and tuning, the bike was good. I mean, it used to heat a bit but was otherwise ok with the pick up..I noticed a drastic change after I'd given my bike for the 3rd service. . I specifically told the showroom mechanic NOT TO WET the area covering the K&N Filter. I told him that I've put K&N and asked him to cover that area with a plastic cover before doing Water wash...I doubt it if he did that...Is there a chance that something wrong happened during the service?? I mean if the filters become wet or something, does pick up reduce ?? *I wonder...*

Yup when a K & N gets wet or any other air filter for that matter, when its wet the air intake is affected and bike may refuse to rev after 6-7K RPM. But anyway that will get sorted out once its dried and that is not the problem with your bike. The issue with Your bike is that its running lean, ask that mechanic of yours to try increasing the jet size by two sizes and then tune the bike. Though when it comes to carb tuning and jetting especially after adding a after-market air filter there is no fixed solution to get the tuning right, its all trial and error my friend!! Even after you get it right there will be a very minimal performance increase since yours is otherwise a stock engine~

P.S. Best of luck for your exams!!!

                            best of luck.

if the k&n is moist, its not a problem for the filter.. the bike will run fine.. however, this moisture causes the slide of thge carburettor to start rusting and its motion is no longer smooth.. it becomes a bit jerky.. this causes problems.. a k&n if soakingly wet will cause clogging but this lasts for just a couple of hours.. so the question of K&n getting wet should not be an issue.. i feel the problem is only with the jetting..

what is the size of the stock jet and what is the size of the current jet??

My advice, rthrow the K&N as far away as possible before u end up damaging ur bike further. Personal Experience.

Still, if u wanna keep it, then increase ur main Jet's size and tune it.
when I had my Pulsar 180, i removed the stock Jet 117.5 and put a 125 Jet. it was running fine. It still is running fine. but trust me, remove the K&N and run on stock before you start another thread here asking for ideas to revive ur engine. I'm not scaring you here bro. think about it
