  • Gearless scooter for my dad - Need your suggestions & Inputs

    Hi Guys!

My dad is planning to sell-off our 6 year old Honda Dio, & is on the lookout for a new gearless scooter.
I haven't had the chance to ride any of the gearless scooters in the market, hence need your suggestions & recommendations.
The vehicle would be used for daily commutes of a maximum of 30Kms.

    The requirements are:
    1. Comfort
    2. Minimum Fuel economy of 30-35 kmpl
    3. Decent maintenance costs

The gearless options I have thought of are (in no order of preference):
    1. Honda Aviator
    2. Honda Activa
    3. Suzuki Access 125
    4. TVS Wego

The HH Pleasure doesn't feature in the list as I think its a girly scooter (maybe its got to do with the advertisements), & the TVS Jive doesn't due to lack of storage space.

My dad test rode the Honda Aviator, and liked it. But he's willing to try other models before taking a pick.

Please let me know if there is any other scooter that should be looked at, & also your recommendations on which one to pick.

    EDIT:
    1. Budget is not a constraint (as gearless scooters currently cost a maximum of 55k-60k, which is ok with us)
    2. Would obviously not want to go for the Dio again.

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

Aviator or Access, as both of them have Telescopic shocks. Activa doesn't have one, so ride is more comfy on the others. The tank of Activa too is smaller compared to others.

Besides, Aviator really suits mature men

Aviator or Access will be the best choices, I would pick the latter, due to lower maintenance costs.
Btw, my wife is riding an Access 125.

I recently bought a Suzuki Access 125 for my dad... better than activa and aviator like telescopic front shock absorbs (Activa doesn't have), bigger fuel tank, light weight around 110kg, big engine 125cc. Cost Rs49000 on road Delhi with 5 years extended warranty.

Check the mahindra rodeo, its a beautiful machine with bigger tyres and its quiet stable as compared to activa and all. secondly the front fueling is a boon for senior people as they dont have to get down to refuel every time and again the space below the seat can easily accomodate a full face helmet.

I was also in same dilemna like you last jun, bought rodeo for my parents and no complains.

Thanks! I know about the old Activa, but the one currently available in the market is a 110cc, & has some differences whn compared to the old one.
My dad is yet to test ride this, & I assume it will be a bit stiff in the ride quality, & it has a smaller fuel tank (5.3L vs. Aviator's 6L)

Thanks for the input! Exactly my thoughts, but I didn't wanna put them here as I didn't wanna come across as already prejudiced.

Thanks bro! So are the spares of the Access really cheap compared to the Activa?

Thanks! You seem to have summed up all of Access 125's strengths. Even I think its the best of the 3 I had mentioned.

Thanks Srinath! I missed out adding the Rodeo to my list.
What you mentioned does sound impressive, so I will tell my dad to look at this one too. How about the cost of spares & the quality of service at the Mahindra SVC?

My dad even looked at the TVS Wego, & test rode it, but didn't like it.

He looked at the Mahindra Rodeo, but didn't like it at all.

The Mahindra Duro appealed to him, & my mom liked it too. His heart seems all set on the Duro, & he is on the verge of booking it.
But I have told him to wait, till I hear from the experts here at xBhp.

Would like to know if anyone has any comments to pour in for the Duro, & Mahindra 2-wheelers & service in general?

You may ask your Dad to test drive Pleasure, about 30% Pleasures are used by males (especially older ones, it's light and comfortable), just give a try..

Test rode the Mahindra Duro & Rodeo

                        Mahindra
I had been to the Mahindra showroom today, & test rode the Duro & Rodeo.
The Duro has a good suspension, extremely comfortable & wide seats, & good pick-up & smooth ride quality. I even rode it over humps & uneven roads, & it fared very well. It has a 6L fuel tank.
The Rodeo has a good suspension, decent seating (I found the Duro much more comfortable), decent pick-up (the Duro was better), & decent ride quality. The Rodeo scored over the Duro only in the suspension (telescopic). It has other features like mobile charging point, front-fuelling, digital speedo etc, which are not requirements for my dad, hence are no value add. The Rodeo's fuel tank is a mere 4.5L, which means more trips to the fuel station, hence we plan to strike this off the list.

                        Honda
My dad initially liked the Honda Aviator, but now feels the Mahindras & TVS Wego are better. Adding to this is the 90 day waiting period () & the callous attitude of the personnel at the Honda showroom.
He doesn't want the Activa due to the stiff suspension.
If their product wasn't half as decent, they would have downed their shutters ages back, all due to their lack of customer service & respect.

                        Suzuki
My dad saw the Access125 but didn't like it. He wasn't even allowed to take a test ride, but sat on the bike to get a feel. The 90 day waiting period is also a deal-breaker here.

                        TVS
I liked the Wego, but found it styled for college kids, rather than mature men. I have been called in tomorrow to take a test ride, but we might not pick it as it is a tiny vehicle, & my dad is a bit on the healthy side.

HH Pleasure does look girlie and thats because of the ads(as priyanka chopra rides it) but its a great gearless scooter. Anyone can ride it. I've rode many times on my cousin's Pleasure and its good. Its comfy and has a good pickup and easy to control too. So have a look at it too.
More CC or Torque or Bhp doesn't decide who wins. Its the soul of the biker. Splendour and Pulsar are the same as long as the bikers share the same passion.

Its tough to decide between the honda and the Wego. The Wego has been engineered well, reeks of quality and near perfection but has the TVS tag. Honda on the other hand has all of this and better resale value (except the TVS tag, of course ). Compare the maintenance costs and spare parts prices and then take your pick. I'd say go with the honda (activa/aviator). It'll keep the head and the heart happy
