  • QUERY- My forthcoming peninsula ride on my BMW

After lots of glitches and delays my BMW R1200GS is on a ship sailing to India, and it now seems my ride may finally take place in mid-September. I am planning to ride my bike (on temporary carnet) on a solo peninsula trip covering Karnataka, Kerala & Tamil Nadu with the following route:
    Bangalore-Hassan-Mangalore-Kasaragod-Calicut-Kodungalur-Alwaye-Munnar-Cochin- Trivandrum-Kanyakumari-Madurai-Pondichery-Chennai-Bangalore.

I am boldly undertaking this trip coz I can depend on a lot of you on xbhp for valuable advice on the routes, road conditions, precautions etc. Therefore, thru this thread I am asking my fellow xbhp members for your valuable inputs:

    1) I want to carry the old fashioned road map for clear directions & distances. Which map do you suggest has good details for these 3 states and where do I buy it?

    3) From Calicut onwards until Kanyakumari I prefer a decent road closer to the coast with less of the bulldozing kerala bus traffic (if at all there is a route like that) if not I settle for a good nice highway. Also the best route from Aluva to Munnar and then directly back to Kochi. Also after Tvm, want to see Peechipara Dam, Thripparappu waterfalls & Padnabhapuram Palace near Kanyakumari- If it is really worth visiting. So suggestions from Kerala xbhpians welcome on the stretch from calicut to Kanyakumari.

    4) From Kanyakumari to Madurai and then Pondi and then Chennai. Suggestions from TN xbhpians sincerely invited on what roads/route should I take.

    5) For that time of the year in KA, KL & TN, I am ready for rain, but otherwise what are the general temperatures I may encounter? Do I carry my airflow jacket/pants or the heavier touring jacket/pants?

Although I will be on a tight schedule, with all gratitude, I would be glad to meet up with as many xbhpians enroute as time permits. Ofcourse, I would be glad to meet up with the Blr xbhp group before the trip starts.

    Many thanks in advance.
    Haroon

Thanks Aryan for the approval. In the absence of a section on "Trip Planning", I didnt know where to post. I had made a suggestion on this thread (post# 11)

Sure, I am also eagerly looking forward to meet as many xbhpians on this trip.

I agree, but they are far away from my present route plan.

No no MT01. I keep travelling to India once in 2-3 months as my family is in India. I am only shipping the bike on a temporary 'Carnet de passage', wherein I dont pay any customs & can keep the bike there for max 6 months.

the highways in kerala are a mess to say the least. its better that you stick to the main highway from calicut to trivandrum and do not take other roads. you want to visit a place enroute deviate and come back to the highway.

for maps try India Map, Map of India

if you want to test the riding capability of your bike( or you), you can try the parallel road from ernakulam - kottayam - kottarakkara - trivandrum. twists all the way i should say most of the way with lot of reckless KSRTC busses thrown in for company.

XBHP' kerala guys should give you a lot of insights.

ps : enjoyed reading your alps tour

                    I would suggest :

                    Kanyakumari - Thirunelveli - Tuticorin - Rameshwaram - Madurai - Villupuram - Pondicherry - East Coast Road - Chennai - Bangalore

@ harikeshpk- Thanks & glad you liked my Alps ride.
Like you said, I think I'll stay with the main highway from Clt to Tvm.

@ Ananth- Thanks. On the route you are suggesting thru Ramanathpuram upto Madurai, is the road/traffic/scenery better than taking the route from Kanyakumari-Virudunagar-Madurai

I swear by the Eicher road atlas - never let me down, and as detailed as it gets on a road map. You can pick one here once you are in India - available at major booksellers (I picked up mine from the big magazines shop near Benetton on Church street, Bangalore).

I stayed in Hoysala village resort in Hassan during one of my bike trips a few years ago. Swell place - but prices are little high though.

                        Good luck with your trip!

Thanks bluevolt. I have a Blr city map of Eicher which is impressive. So I guess Eicher road atlas would be the way to go. Thanks

                            TVM-Calicut
                            - Haroon chetta when we did a TVM-Calicut trip last year the roads from Calicut to thrissur made us really tired, don't know what's the status now, then from
                            Thrissur-EKM
its really awesome now, am doing 100+ on my FZ during my monthly ride to home, so do i need to mention the case of BMW...(remember these roads are only good in the daylight, at night its a big probs. because at some places the road works are going on and during my every trip i can see many cars run out of roads, if one don't know where the road twist and turns it will be a real problem, i suggest you to cross TCR-EKM during day time...) if you are interested you can take a left turn in between TCR-EKM to reach Athirappilli which is ~30-40 kms from the highway, beautiful scenery and beautiful twisty roads which you easily knee down on these roads not exceeding 70-80 kmph(coz these are slow winding roads, its a must seen place, hope you had gone there)...

Thanks Binoy for the lovely insights on the road conditions. I sure will be riding mostly in daylight and although bad roads are always a concern, I am hoping my GS will do a better job in handling them unless my GS tells me 'you are a louzy rider, so I cant do much'.
