  • FZ 16 as a tourer

    Hi Guys,

I am a newbie.... I am thinking of buying aYamaha FZ16 and would like to use it as a tourer bike (say 1500-2000 Kms)...any thoughts?

I know lot of people think of it as a city bike and would rather prefer Pulsar 220 or a ZMR (which I agree). But if anybody ridden an FZ16 for long distance could you please share your experience.

    thanks

FZ16 is okay for touring. i use an rx100 for touring sometimes. the fact is, you can use almost any motorcycle for touring. but the problem is, on the long run you'll find fz16's low power (comparing a ZMR or 220) a problem.

The problems you should be ok with:

        1. It can maintain 70-90 kmph or so, for long times, not much more than that.

        2. The wind blast does seem to be strong when moving in from a half faired or even a bikini faired bike.

        3. You can do some Touring favorable mods, like 15T front sprocket from Unicorn, 180cc big bore kit, touring bags, etc.

        4. It won't give much mileage, probably around 45 on highways, but that's it.

If you're ok with these problems, than FZ should be a good tourer for you.

I own fz-s for one year..IMO It is good for street ride and cornering stability..
It lacks the top-end grunt so probably not good for touring purpose. Many times i felt its poor performance in highways..But it is good in some (only)short tourings. As u mentioned around 1000+ kms touring, this one not good for that kind..
It will be better to choose some other bikes like Karizma,220 or Bullet..Bcoz they are good tourers..

I did my ladakh ride on a borrowed FZ16 and did not face any problem. The biggest challenge in touring on FZ is stock rear tyre. It is prone to frequent punctures. I replaced rear tyre and then did not face absolutely any problem in the whole tour.

FZ16 is a very good bike, specially if you not into high speed touring. It can ride continuously on 80-90kmph without stressing itself or the rider. It has one of the best handling I have seen on any street bike in Indian market, the suspension is superb and the rear one is adjustable as well. It has good tyres. The only problem is that if you are a tourer who tours with saddle bags, then you will have to get a custom one made. Its a VFM and very reliable machine

Dude just ride it. Remember, its the biker and not the bike. Here we have one person who tours on a Discover 125. There are people who tour on RX and of course, the SBKs. Just ride.

                        Go for it...

I have a FZ16 and i recently completed a 1000+ km tour with a pillion. No problems at all and even at Jalori pass, it climbed up effortlessly without the pillion having to disembark. If you are into high speed touring (110+) then you need to rethink but otherwise just go for it.

PERSEVERE... failure is not an option!

well,i don't own an fz,but 3 of my frnds do,and they have some serious problems with the bikes performance and mileage. and if you wanna go touring, why not a bike with a proper wind deflector and with better millage?
may i suggest the gs-150r or the dazzler,or maybe if your into looks as well, why not the rtr 180? or even the avenger 220?cause the fz-16 isn't a cheap bike. i am suggesting these since i presume you still have to buy the bike. 1 saw ~45 kmpl on my p220F on a short trip when kept under 100kmph occasionally reaching the 130's.

Well, you can do touring on any bike. If you check our forums, you can find people who did touring on Yamaha Gladiator, even though it's 125cc. IMO, it's good to have a bike with better top end performance. FZ is a fine bike, but lacks top end performance. Bikes like P220/Zma are better bets. Personally, I would go for P220/Zma if i'm looking to get a bike for touring. But, if you are a relaxed rider i.e. doesn't ride above 80 kmph for long, then I guess FZ is good enough for you.

If you are still skeptical get a friend's FZ and go for a 100 - 200 km ride. You will know that any bike is good for touring. Heck! One guy in BN tours in a Bajaj CT 100!
