I used to flat out refuse taking pillion last year because adding my weight and that of my bike and luggage I was not confident of managing the bike on the roads - the balance and turns and speeds etc.

This year I have done most rides with a very good pillion who doesn't know how to ride a 2 wheeler.

It is good because company is welcome on the longer roads I am doing this year. Also it is safer because the bike is actually better balanced with pillion on the seat. Pillion also has better view of traffic / vehicles behind me and certainly useful.

Signboards I sometimes miss are noticed by my pillion and we both can halt for breaks without worrying about rest of the gang. Plus I touched 110 KMPH on my Bullet for the first time and that too with Cramster luggage and pillion with backpack on Thane-Bhiwandi Bypass - on this road I always make it to 100 (solo) and now it is better.

    COMMUNICATION WITH HELMETS:
    1. Helmets should be always be there on your heads
    2. To talk - slow down to the left and lift your visors for easy talk
    3. If seriously debating - take a halt at a teashop/ dhaaba
    4. Pillion is not there for non-stop banter - concentrate on the road completely at speeds above 60 KMPH (yes SIXTY yes indeed). Talk when required or when free of traffic and hopefully in daylight or clear visibility.

    Hope this helps !!!

                there are multiple solutions!!
                1) as mentioned earlier do the talking at a stop and riding on the bike unless it is for directions or other necessary things

                2) since most travel with their girl friends/ wives as pillion u already wud be having cheap outgoing rates on ur service provider so use ur normal phone wired/bluetooth head sets ..better to spend a few paise on a call than to invest 10000 in new helmet just for the pillion..

                3) Motorcycle Helmets with Bluetooth Roundup from Bikes in the Fast Lane - Daily Motorcycle News
check this link out some magazine actually reviwed the momo and gave it good remarks...

                regards

Guys, I found the circuit diagram I was looking for!

Too bad now I am in Pune now. Don't know anyone here who can make this circuit. Is there any shop in pune who can give this circuit readymade?

This file couldn't be attached with regular xbhp upload. Hence I uploaded it to rapidshare.

                  Any expert comments?

                      Wow...a nice thread...!!

It would surely be useful to ppl on tours...!!

I have tried 2 different sets but find the headset quality poor, but that could just be my old age and its getting hard to hear.

As usual I am joining this thread late and hope this helps.

For almost 5 years I have used a 'Chatterbox HJC-50 Tandempro' for Rider to Pillion intercom and it works very well. Its not a fantastic set like Autocom or J&M (which are the industry standard), but the HJC does a decent job and is good value for money. Installation is very simple and took only 10 minutes without any drilling or gluing etc. It can be easily removed if you plan not to use it.

It also has an Aux jack to plug in your ipod or walkman. There is a two-way switch that changes from intercom to aux mode so both of you can listen to music when the conversation gets boring! I dont do too much pillion rides, but for whoever I have taken on the bike, they enjoyed it. Few months back when I took our fellow-member Kar1zma on the ride, unfortunately, my helmet mic konked, so we could not do it. I would recommend this to anybody, but just make sure the base unit does not get wet and also you must be careful to disconnect the cables from the base unit before getting off your bike. This particular set uses the male/female connector similar to the one on our old computer mouse (non USB type).

I bought it from Helmetshop.com and the relevant link is here below.

                        Chatterbox Motorcycle Headsets and Radios
                        (this page loads slowly)

You will need to buy one piece of item no 13203 (the base unit) and 2 pieces of the item no 13197 (Spkr/mic set for full face helmet) or 13202 (head-mic set for Open face helmet). The spkr/mic set come with a short wire, so an extension cord is essential. Just buy the 'mouse cord extension (non USB)' from a computer acc store in your city, that will be cheaper.

If you want an intercom without all the cables, then a "helmet specific Bluetooth" is the only option and that will set you back many dollars!

I had the same problem when we are going for the tour 700+ kms sitting like dumb for more than 4 hrs is really an issue. I thought of putting 2 small mono amp with mic cum head phone. Later we stopped touring so i didnt think of that. Water proofing will be an issue

Heyy guys...even i am thinking to buy such set...experienced it once while riding with stewarch...and i liked the concept...it helped me alot..specially since i rode slow and didint know the roads...so could get the necessary directions from stewarch and his buddy.

I am looking for rider-pillion as well as bike to bike communication.

From google i found J&m integrator to be the best...but their pricing is almost like a rip-off specially the cords and extensions are priced more than what i sell my gold for

I think starcom or autocom looks good, but dunno..still looking for suggestions from ppl who have used it. I am thinking to order it from US..lets see if i get something on time.

Scala too is marketed well...but i dont how well it works
