it seems to be a problem in the 'bushes' of the self that might not be providing the current properly...........
      get 'em checked....

Check your startor motor relay's resistance, if its kaput replace it.

if yours is a ug3, then ask your mechanic to check the "pick tail" assembly in the clutch lever mount... for temporary solution, just pull your clutch and release it suddenly and forcefully... then try cranking with self starter.. if it starts, then surely it is the prob of the "pick tail" assembly... the idea behind this is, if the "pick tail" is faulty then it will not sense the clutch release and will not send signal to the self starter... thus it will not start.... this is what my mechanic in the authorized pro biking center told to me...

totally agree with u man..had the same problem on my p150 self start long time ago..got the relay unit replaced..and now.half a button brings it to life..
might have to get the wiring checked for cracks n stuff along with cleaning the carbon formation on the button battery and other parts
