  • Getting my Yamaha SZR SaddleSore ready

    Hey All..

I bought my SZR about 6 months ago and I am having a great time with it..
Decent mileage plus the vehicle is great ont he highways too.. Recently did a 400 km ride on it and loved the stability on the highways..

Now, I am planning to do a IBA SaddleSore 1600 ride on the bike and I am not sure whether the bike s setup will be right .. (considering it is a commuter) ..

However, I am planning to change the gearbox to that of the Suzuki GSX 150 (6-speed gear) / any other available 6 speed gear box to get a better top-end.. I know a xBhp member who has done a SaddleSore ride on his GSX 150 ..

Has anyone done the same or know someone who has attempted this ??
    your thoughts please..

I would really appreciate your thoughts on other aspects too such as...
    1) Gear Box
    2) Air Filter
    3) Tyres
    4) Overall engine tuning ??

Too much time, money and effort. Why not buy a GS150R instead?
BTW, you can probably just check and change the sprocket to get a higher top-end. Also, I don't see any reason why you can't accomplish the SS on your stock bike...

Thanks Guru.. But the Bike is just 6 months old and I love the bike (dont want to buy the GSR 150 as its too tall for me)...

Could you be a little specific of what kind of sprocket change will I need to do.. Will I need to change the Chain setup as well.. How much would it cost etc ?

^^^ You want to change sprocketing & things just to a GQ is it? Just think if its even worth doing just for a GQ ride?

All you need is practice endurance; practically, if you're able to keep 72 Kmph for 23 hours, then you'll certainly complete your SS. Keep aside about an hour as buffer. If you're able to ride 100-110 Kmph steadily, then that's more than sufficient for you to complete SS. And you're from Mumbai right? Time it well to start from Ghodbandar road or little futher on NH4, ride all way upto NICE road Bangalore & ride back till Kholapur & little further (no need till Satara too). You'll certainly succeed.

            Thanks Aargee..

Thanks for the route tip... I am actually from Bangalore (I was working in Mumbai for a year) and am planning to follow the inverse of the route you suggested - Bangalore-Mumbai-Bangalore

I have ridden 400+km in a day before and I am gonna practice to do more.. However, I was considering not to stress the engine too much by installing the 6th gear...
Considering that the bike was made to be a city commuter, will sustained speeds of upto 110 kmph not fry/screw the engine ??

well i do own a SZR ... same as you 6 months .. have done 2 one day ride almost covering 250km and 333km .. i think you dun have to do any thing ?
just get nitro for air in tire and may be you can change to Motul engine oil instead of yamaha lube .. i get a decent speed on straight highway upto 118kmph ... regarding air filter am not that good .. i will have a eye over here as this is szr

              wish you good luck ..

Why not simply change the engine oil, run the vehicle in city for 100-200 Kms & then carry out?

Well don't do that!!! You need to time well, reason being that...
                  1. After Kholapur, the traffic increases
                  2. Pune-Mumbai express highway is closed for mobikes & the NH4 isn't that supportive for speeds

Alternate route you can give a try is...
                  Bangalore-Satara-Bangalore-Krishnagri-Bangalore
                  OR
                  Bangalore-Satara-Devanahalli-NH7 towards Hyderabad & back

Any bike can do, provided you don't stress the engine hard; just practice for ENDURANCE & nothing else!!!

I had seen loads of SaddleSore riders do the Pune-Bangalore route so I guessed that would be the best.

However, do you think the Bangalore-Satara-Bangalore-Krishnagiri-Bangalore route will be accepted, since its kinda cyclic ?

Nitro for tire , i heard its good for engine as well as mileage .. well the tire also gets a good life , well there wont be any change you feel when you ride with air or nitro ..

yeah even that can be done as per you, yamaha lube is also not bad one ! i prefer motul

BLR-Pune-BLR will not help you with all 1600+ Kms; you'll need additional. Check with anyone else if you want to!!!

Doing repeated cycles is not accepted; check the routes Ananth & Xinfii did, they started from Chennai towards NH45, came back to Chennai & took NH4. If that's accepted, why not this?

No offense but most of the guys have done their SS on NH4... and almost every from Mumbai and Pune Xbhp treats Mumbai - (Lonavala) - Pune NH4 patch as their Sunday ride playground

^^^ No offense taken; I'm not saying it CANNOT be done, but rather saying, doing it on different route makes it less stressful due to free from traffic.
