Engine oil change or Top up?

    v)is it sound to dismantle my carb. and service them at home? or shud i leave it in ASC? bcz i feel i will have to slowly service things on this bike and get this to its best soon. i have seen a classic photographic explanation of this ( if am not wrong it was here and again i think it was by Mr.PINAKI jhi but am not sure of that..) anyway, can anyone give me that link if thats here
    vi) is it sound to use normal petrol if am planning to ride enough kms to burn off them at once ? or shud i use only shell petrol ( or any high qual. ) as i normally do..? hope u get me ryt.

    i) Continue with mineral . You did not mention your location and climate and usage . If in Indian plains use motul 3000 4T plus 20w40 , gulf pride 4T 20w40 , Shell AX3 20w40, Yamalube 20w40 mineral , Castrol 2-wheeler oil 20w40 (red bottle) . For cooler places with average temps below 20C year around or if you prefer 10w30 , try to get gulf pride 4T 10w30 , motul 3000 4T 10w30 or HeroHonda 4T 10w30( the one made by TIDE WATER OIL is best ) .

    ii) Check the oil level every 500 kms and top up to dip-stick "max" mark if low . Replace oil fully every 2000 kms like clockwork . Drain the old oil hot .

    iii) both splendor and splendor+ has same engine . It has two difficult-to-access oil filters ... a centrifugal filter and a small square mesh type oil screen . You have to open the clutch side engine case to access those . At 30k kms you should clean them once though many people have run 3 times that kms without cleaning those , without problem .


    iv) Change the plug when it is worn , it can run pleasantly for 20k kms on this bike . Plug needed is NGK CR7HSA (standard) or better NGK CR7HGP (G-Power platinum tip) .

    v) You can try carb-clean yourself , it's really simple and a sunday morning work . Worse you'll do is still way better than the ASC jokers . Here is the link to my attempt at it [Ownership Thread]: Hero Honda Splendor - Page 11 - xBhp.com : The Global Indian Biking Community

    vi) Try 50:50 mix of IOCL regular petrol & Xtra-premium petrol , works well for my splendor .

      Anyway,here are my views on your reply:

      First of all, thank you for ur reply:

      1. I live in chennai. So mostly its hot here. So now, should i stick to mineral or switch to S-syn ?

      If mineral....can i go with 10W-30 as preferred by ASC?
      ( Initially it was 20w-40 as per manual but they say, after so much research they have found MAK HH 10W30 is the best oil for my splendor.)

      anyway, if u advice 10w-30wud do, can i stick to MAK10W30 or shud i look for motul or castrol power one ?

      2.Copied ur advice there. will do that for sure. But buddy as i said u before. this bike has nt been maintained to its best though its not been used too much. not even 30K in 8 yrs....so this time i already chnged oil a week back..the oil was bad while draining...am planning to change it again after 1000k .. so tht the carbon residue would be washed out. wat do u feel ? or can i wait for 2000k ? ya i knw its better as soon? but wats ur opinion ?

      3.thank you for informing abt the hidden filter in the bike. i would really love to check on it. I knw the importance of filter. But the engine is a splash type lubrication ..rt ? are those filters to filter while the oil is returning after lubrication.....? i cant understand its function with the picture...but though am interested to change it actually....i dont think i have enough tools to wrk on it. i might get struck...but let me see...iw ill discuss and wrk on it. thank you.

      4. Spare plug....20k is ok....actually its been almost 30K on this bike. but i havnt had any issues though...i already bought a new one from the ASC. But not the NGK ones u say , i got the champion one...that comes with the bike...and so no G-platinum tip too. the most sadest part is...the ASC is so damn bad that they sell everything in MRP not evena paise less....thats wat all the normal spare part shops do.....am iriitated in getting things ther but also wrred abt duplicates if bought in normal market. anywa, i have a sprak plug now as spare ( new one ). will cahgne if u advice to do so..as its 30k

      5.thank you for the link on carb cleaning....actually, i shud say coincidently, jus today i have cleaned my carb. to be frank, i havent boxed it back..bcz i dint get the bowl o-ring....and iw anted to change the pilot jet as i was not happy with it...and bad part is....i dint get original o-ring anywhere around my area in the market..they have only duplicate and i dnt want to put duplicates and that too on o-ring s and gaskets..i cannot afford to do that. and buddy, one small tiny pilot jet is rs.143 . i cant stunned seeing it and they say i can put duplicate which is only rs.15. but i never wanted to do that as the holes in the duplicate is lot bigger than the one there. anyway, planning to get the o-ring from ASC tomorw...will box it and will give feed back.

      6.ya, ok..will try your idea on petrol. i have been putting only shell these days...dam they are much costlier than any other bunks. anyway, wanted the best to give. will think of ur idea too. do u some idea of adding any addictives to petrol by us? i dont think thats fine but ppl have talked abt that here too for lot of purpose...

      *7 . sorry that i dint not post my question in the right palce. actually am new here and i dnt knw the catogarisation. and moreover this thread was simialr to the one i had in my mind, so continued it here. anyway, no excuse. i will try to find right place next time.

      Sorry that my reply is been running long...but yet i thot i shud give true views. anyway, one more thing is, shud i definitely use carb clean for cleaning carb. i jus cleaned them with petrol, kerosene on outer and blown air...tahts it..wont that be enough ? i dont get a proper carb clean here....will trry to get it int eh ASC tomorw ? but is it neccesary for sure to use cleaner there ? one more thing is i found my air filter very clean after so many kms....i dnt knw wats wrong....even being good makes me suspect . i checked the air doesnt by pass the filter...shud i change the filter to get a more porus one or new one ? one last thing....am also interested in getting my exhaust pipe ( silencer ) cleaned seperately ? as its never been cleaned before & so tht back pressure is avoided .wat do u say ? i saw oil leak in the spark plug area for long time...i suspect back pressure.

        dude its good to stick on with s-synthetic shell oil..... cause i use it for all my, the best part is flush ur engine once every 10,000kms,and go for new oil every 3500 to 4000kms if its a s-synthetic...... if u do this u can instantly feel the engine smoothness ,brilliant clutch operation, and u can do a good stable engine tune up if u get a good mechanic

          if there is a oil leak in Ur spark plug area ,remove the plug and see if its coated with oil, that means yr piston rings are weak by which the engine oil is passing through.... this is clearly a bad sign for the engine bore is not in a healthy shape, is ur bike pushing out smoke????? if so better go for a new bore piston kit.........or else as a secondary thought change a new set of piston rings, but ideal choice is a new bore piston kit and set the engine like a new bike....... only then u get good compression, mileage etc etc.......
