  • beginner query: strange sound beyond 60km/hr - fz-s

    Hey guys,

this is my first post, been a silent reader all these times reading travelogue and stuff. Great job guys..

    coming to the point,

I own a fz-s, 3700kms clocked still now.. i happened to hear a strange sound like metal string clinging.. i hear this sound only when the bike reaches beyond 60km/hr..

note: my third free service date falls on next month.. so how do i deal with this.. i really have no idea since I'm a beginner and have no technical knowledge about bikes..

    Query Approved

How old is your bike? Warranty Period etc. All that information also provide. Stock or modified. Helps in diagnosing problems!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Your bike is in warranty. And how can you be so casual to say you have no idea about warranty?

Anyways, do you have a metallic key chain? Trust me, the bugger (metallic key chain) gave me nightmares for almost 2 days.
Apart from that, get the exhaust nut tightened. Most probably, it has come loose.

Finally (least possible), get the tappets adjusted.
        Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.

Bro... where did you notice the sound coming from?? is it from the front? rear? side?? i mean.. you must have a clue about it right?? if not.. try to figure out from where the noise comes from.. like Divya Sharan said.. it can be the sound from the exhaust nut or bolt... how heavy is the sound?

beginner query: strange sound beyond 60km/hr - fz-s

I feel it's coming from back.. Will check it but can you guys provide on what's to be done hopefully some picture or video will help me.

Sound is like if u take 2 to 3 strings something like guitar strings and run your fingers over it.

Sound is clearly audible. Lasts upto 3 to 4 secs

Well, if its coming from the rear, then in that case it can be the chain noise.. try to get the chain tightened.. it lasts for 3 to 4 secs.. but how often does it repeat??

Yes it comes for sure when bike reaches 55+.. Just reached office.. even now i heard it.. 3-4 secs.. then after a short interval it again repeats..

I am assuming it could be the chain.. tighten the chain..

Sound is clearly audible. Lasts upto 3 to 4 secs
                      Scenario 1:

Open the seat, remove tool kit, keep it in your back pack bag, ride bike, see if sound persists. If it does then tools in tool kit are not making noise. If the sound vanishes, then you know what was making the sound and next time you put in the tool kit, stuff a piece of cloth inside along with it.

                      Scenario 2:

Inspect the complete drive chain assembly. I once had a similar sound coming from my chains, seems like the culprit was the lock nut which goes over the chain tightening nut had gone loose. So the chain tightening nut had also gone loose and the washer was moving around causing tinkling noise. Tightening the nuts solved all problem.

                      Scenario 3:

                      • Sure it is not your imagination? Try and repeat sound in different settings.
                      • Does it come only when you go over rough road or potholes? Something is moving around.
                      • Does it come only at a certain speed? Is it then uniform over the speed? Something might be wrong with chain/brake...
                      • What is it that you do because of which sound stops? If this is uniform then tell us cause that can give us a clue.
                      • Is it possible that the chain is rubbing against plastic cover/metal swing arm? Lubricate the chain. Does the sound persist after lubrication??

Frankly what you describe is too vague for any definitive sure shot answer.

This was the exact culprit.. chain was loosen..
