Hi Niranjan, Shelton here from Coimbatore... I've been to Ooty plenty of times by bike.. I have a Pulsar 150 Dtsi. First of all let me tell you bikes lose lots of oil during long rides due to various factors like constant heat, movement etc.. and especially going to places like Ooty. I found out that due to constant bending of the bike while riding in hills the oil seeps out thru small openings whever they r in the casing... and the heat developed inside the engine riding in cold areas is much more than in plains, so oil loss is much more.... So it is mandatory that u chk oil levels often during long rides. I dint know this problem for the first few rides, then after one such ride to ooty i found out that my engine was getting heated up easily, so checked my oil level & found out that it was very low.. Then found out from an automobile expert that oil loss is too high for hill riding. The reason for ur bike's siezure is due to riding on the limits when there wasn't enough oil. that's normal, if u had ridden it normally u cud've saved ur engine.. Anyways Good luck for ur bike's revival & i feel 15k is too much, u can try getting a good mechanic outside & change only the things absolutely necessary cause people in showrooms unnecessarily change parts which can also be serviced. anyways it is for u to decide.... Hereafterwards keep it in mind that u carry atleast half liter of oil with u when u go for long rides... Ride Safe..Young riders pick a destination and go, Old riders pick a direction and go !
My best trip till date:http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/tourer/2...uke-390-a.html

This is interesting. I don't think I will quite believe this until I get it confirmed. Loosing oil level is a very very dangerous thing. I don't think it will seep out while leaning around the hills. But everyone has a point. The long haulers and tourers will be able to answer this.Originally posted by shelton_jh View PostHi Niranjan, Shelton here from Coimbatore... I can't say for sure.. but if you know a reliable local mech, he might help you find a good one..Originally posted by TNiranjanT View Postbut what would be the reliability of these aftermarket con rods?
Alternate Q: . now how reliable do you think your bajaj crank is? (now that it has seized)? .. It didn't last 26K.. and you are willing to pay 4K+ for a new assembly! ..
--
From all the engine seizures that my pulsar has faced (and it has faced quite a few).. the few things I've learn't are:
- Bajaj will first advice you on changing all faulty/part-faulty parts with no explanation on why they failed.. finger always points to you..
- The service center will always show you the costliest repair solution.. replace entire assembly / as much as possible.. and with no real guarantee. You are again at fault if things fail after 10K kms.. no questions asked..
- Many components can be machined and repaired.. Bajaj won't tell that to you..So, find a reliable mech in your area and tell him you want a cheap but reliable solution..
If you've got that service booklet with a stamp on all pages that say you've got ur bike serviced from an authorised bajaj service center.. then you better switch to stock (at a local mech).. and approach bajaj for warranty ...
If a 26K bike can end in this state.. why spend $$ more and fix it.. with no real guarantees.. bajaj will not guarantee that your bike will run fine after they repair it.. (they might tell you verbally, but nothing on paper).. then why not go cheap this time?..
On the other hand.. you can get a cheap fix, ride it to your hearts content and if you feel its upto the mark or not you can go cheap again or make plans of selling the bike.. Else, you'll see your self spending big $$ every few 10K/20k kms..

I agree with all your points bro. My problem here is, the bike has been split up an open wide. At this point of time if I was to take the bike from them, and take it to my local mechanic, I would anyway have to spend about 6k to rework it. I felt spending 11k instead, thats the latest quote btwOriginally posted by HydroXidE View PostI can't say for sure.. but if you know a reliable local mech, he might help you find a good one..

, would be a better option.
BTW, I remember the Bajaj manager telling me that the new engine will have a 2 year warranty? I'm not to sure, I can confirm on that though. But for sure as you say, if the engine was to fail again within the next 10k km I will for sure raise hell
Thanks for all your suggestions guyssigpic

Engine running lean and the low-density of air at the high altitudes would have taken a toll on the engine, man that's scary making me think twice before i take my bike to any hill roads, my bike is also running an K&N with stock jetsI'm too intelligent to the unintended, and too dumb for the obvious.

WOW! This thread has become an eye-opener of sorts! Great info guys. And TNiranjanT, buddy, I hope your bike gets back to factory conditions. All the best! But make well-informed decisions ok.10 Commandments:
1)Thank thy God for being alive.
2)Thou shalt respect one's own life and the live's of other road users.
3)Thou shalt respect one's own bike.
4)Love thy bike as thy self.
5)Always wear safety gear.
6)Alcohol is a strict NO!
7)Thou may lust after thy neighbour's bike specially if its of the R1 kind!
8)Thou shalt ride with 'ultra-most' care and caution when on Indian roads.
9)Thou shalt never leave the engine running at long traffic halts.
10)Thou shalt follow all of the above.

Taking some insights from the suggestions from this thread,
I have decided to get the bore piston work done by my own mechanic. When I called up the BSC, the service engineer was initially irritated when I said I would like to take the bike back. He had arranged for all the spares and was ready to start work on the bike. I had to pacify him, because my bike has to come back to me in the condition it is right now and not with the remaining few good parts replaced by rubbish
Right now that is my major fear. Have decided to get the 200 bore piston installed on my bike and going to run in on stock filter box and spark plugs.
Will keep you guys postedsigpic
