  • Need helping sort out top end speed on my pulsar 150

    Hi guys,
Needed your help here. Mine is 2005 model pulsar 150. Usually I drive bellow 70. Not gone above that. But yesterday night on way back to home I tried opening full throttle. Strangely bike is not going above 80-85 kmph. Yesterday I have changed the engine oil from bajaj dtsi to shell hx7 semi synthetic. One month back I have put new carb, clutch plateand and New air filter and cleaned the spark plug. Using 120/80 rear tyre. Tyre in good condition..and feel like it lacking power at top end.will a k&n and NGK iridium spark plug will do any miracle here to increase the top speed. Not sure why it is behaving like that. Please guid me

    Topic Approved.

Till the time your top speed problem is solved, don't fit in K&N filters or NGK spark plugs. NGK spark plugs don't give performance boost that is instantly noticeable, and K&N's might ruin your engine unless installed very carefully with upjetting, or if you get the BA2201 installed.

If your exhaust (silencer) in good condition? Does your bike sound the same as it did when it was new, or does it sound more noisy or throaty?
Some Pulsars' top speed problems are caused only due to exhaust being out of tune, or being tampered with. Try fitting another similar exhaust and check if the problem is solved.

Along with the suggestions I would like to add: check for the proper carb tuning and AFR ratio. At what RPM engine idles?

Along with the above points, I must mention that if the OP has never ridden above 70-80 in these 8 years, then the engine would obviously hesitate doing such speeds. Run in is required for making the engine familiar with all revs and load for this very reason!

Re: Need helping sort out top end speed on my pulsar 150

          Hi
          I have a classic pulsar 150.
I had the same problem that the bike was not crossing 80 to 90kmph.
In my case the bike ussed to jerk and buck at those speeds
I discovered my tank had water in it
And it was something simple. Apart from that you can check for a clogger air filter or if you have kept something below the seat remove it. It dissrupts airflow during high revving as the engine sucks a lot of air that time.
Over revving can also be due to improper balancer gear installation as you mentioned you got clutch plates changed recently.
Something as simple as spark plug cap goin kaput to improper point distance in the plug itself can cause this. Also check for afr tuning in the carb and adulterated fuel. If you have never chaned plug wires you may also try that. Let me know about the progress.
          Hope this issue resolves asap.

The engine if tuned perfectly would idle around 1k to 1.2 k rpm. Any higher is of no benifit and any lower like 900 or 800 rpm will likely cause your engine to shut down.

This sounds like a carb issue. You said you put in a new carb, but the way bike is behaving it seems it is not getting enough fuel at the top end range. Seems like your main jet is clogged with dirt. This can happen even on a new carb if you are running dirty petrol. I will say get the main jet cleaned. Also make sure you are using clean petrol from trusted petrol pump.

                Some points to note:
The clutch may be slipping. The reasons could be many, but as you are using hx7 grade oil which is a car oil.. the primary reason could be oil.
120/80 is what the stock tyre was or the stock was lower profile.. this could be another reason.
Poor carb setting or restriction in air supply too can reduce the top end.

Exhaust seems to be OK. There is holes or anything. Only exhaust is pending to replace. Almost other parts replaced including bore

Shell hx7 is semi synthetic bike oil as fas I know. Default tyre profile was 100/90. I have up sized it to 120/80. Thought of going back to stock size and see if it gives any improvement. But my fried is running with 120/80 and he can easily go 100 kmph

                        Engine idles at 700-800 rpm

Yes need to try tuning the carb. When I fixed the new carb I have asked the bajaj service centre guy to tune it. He said new carb is comes with correct tuning from factory. Main problem is getting a good mechanic who understand the problem. If anybody know a good mechanic please let me know. I have fed up with the bajaj service people

HX7 is Car oil. AX7 is bike oil. You may have got confused between the letters, but if you are using HX7, clutch slipping is very much possible.

If your friend has the same bike.. try riding side by side with him. Speedo errors are quite famous with Pulsars. 120/80 would reduce top end in comparison to 100/90.
