  • [Photo Feature]: Petrol leakage from carburetor

    Hey guys,

I have a 2012 Apache RTR 160 Hyper Edge model with 26k on odo. I did not use my bike for almost 1 year as I was away. After coming back I tried to start the bike but it gave a lot of trouble and somehow I took it to the TVS service center nearby. The mechanic, after the service, told that carburettor should be changed as I had not started the bike for 1 year and the petrol that was stocked inside damaged the whole carburettor. It was very weird. Then I took my bike home.

Now my bike is giving me a weird problem. It runs as usual but at around 3k rpm it does as the bike doesn't move when it is running out of petrol, it jerks and then moves. The actual Apache performance is not there and he said this problem is because the carburettor is not in a good condition. And the petrol leaks from carburettor and its drain pipe.

Is it possible? What maybe the problem?

    Please help.

Bro, I think you should consult a reputed mechanic & get the carburettor overhauling done. I'm suggesting this as you have mentioned that the ASC is telling you to get the carburettor replacement. You can try overhauling, they will disassemble the whole carburettor and should clean all the components individually with petrol.

I concur. The problem seems to be a classic one that might result from carburettor issues. Try overhauling first. If that does not work, then only change. ASCs are notorious for getting people to change parts without taking any effort in fixing them.

Yeah as the fellow xbhpian said check if there any ways for repairing the carb first !

If it's not up to mark ,then noway you should go for a New carb ! (Costs around 1K-2K bucks)

Don't buy the spares from TVS ASC !! as they are costly.

*Buy spares from any reputed main dealer for automobiles (probably few shops in town/City).

As you've mentioned bike was kept halt without any precautionary actions for a year !

1.Replace the old oil with new engine oil.

2.Get charged the battery by dealer or ASC.

          3.Replace the brake fluids.

4.Clean and install your spark plug!!(small amount of petrol does the best job here)

5.If possible use an petrol additive as it reduces the wear and tear of engine parts !

6.Definitely few parts have been corroded, check and fix it accordingly!

Don't ever halt your bike with petrol if it's more than a month!

          Cheers,
          Ride safe

It is the old carb only. But the jerking problem as the bike is running out of petrol is only when the engine is cold. When it is heated after riding for half an hour, bike seems perfect and runs good. What maybe the issue if this happens?
                  Should I replace spark plug?

The spark plugs are capable to work for 20K kms atleast .(only they need to be cleaned with PETROL that's enough!)

I hope experienced fellows can sort out your issue !

So check for the couple of things:

1.Make sure the spark plug is clean enough !!
2.The jerks can occur if the water is mixed with the petrol !(you haven't used your bike for a year) drain all the petrol /empty your fuel tank !
*Fill some fresh fuel and check whether the jerks are still there??

                    Ride safe.

I cleaned spark plug with petrol then drained petrol tank and then filled with fresh petrol. But same problem exists. I don't know what's the problem.
